Abstract

A detection system for measuring one or more condition within a predetermined area includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light. The at least one fiber optic cable defines a node arranged to measure the one or more conditions. A light source is coupled to the at least one fiber optic cable for emitting a modulated light to the node. The modulated light is transmitted into the predetermined area. A light sensitive device is coupled to the at least one fiber optic cable for receiving scattered light associated with the node. A control unit is operably coupled to the light source and to the light sensitive device to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions within the predetermined area.

Claims (25)

1. A detection system for monitoring a predetermined area comprising:

a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light, the at least one fiber optic cable defining a node arranged to monitor the predetermined area;

a light source coupled to the at least one fiber optic cable for emitting a modulated light to the node, the modulated light being transmitted into the predetermined area;

a light sensitive device coupled to the at least one fiber optic cable for receiving scattered light associated with the node, wherein one or more electronic signals generated by the light sensitive device are synchronized to the modulated light, the one or more electronic signals being collected for a period of time that starts when the light source is operated; and

a control unit operably coupled to the light source and to the light sensitive device to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of a condition within the predetermined area, wherein the controller is configured to selectively operate the light source in at least a first pattern and a second pattern, and light within each of the first pattern and the second pattern varies in at least one of intensity, width, frequency, and phase;

wherein the first pattern and the second pattern are cross-correlated to distinguish between multiple conditions at the node, and the plurality of conditions include a presence of a fire and a presence of a person.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the modulated light is emitted from the light source in a known pattern.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the modulated light is emitted from the light source in a randomly generated pattern.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the modulated light includes pulses of light.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the modulated light includes a continuous signal.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein monitoring the predetermined area to determine a condition includes computing an autocorrelation.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the condition includes smoke.

8. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the predetermined area is one of a building and an avionics bay of an aircraft.

9. A method of measuring a condition within a predetermined area comprising:

transmitting a first pattern of light generated by a light source along a fiber harness and through a node of a fiber optic cable of the fiber harness, the node arranged to measure the conditions;

receiving scattered light associated with the node at a light sensitive device, wherein a first electronic signal generated by the light sensitive device is synchronized to the light modulated in the first pattern, the first electronic signal being collected for a period of time that starts when the light source is operated to transmit the first pattern of light;

transmitting a second pattern of light generated by the light source to the node;

receiving scattered light associated with the node at the light sensitive device, wherein a second electronic signal generated by the light sensitive device is synchronized to the light modulated in the second pattern, the second electronic signal being collected for a period of time that starts when the light source is operated to transmit the second pattern of light; and

using the first pattern and the second pattern to measure at least one of the presence and magnitude of the condition within the predetermined area, wherein the light of the first pattern varies in at least one of intensity, width, frequency, and phase, and

distinguishing between a plurality of conditions at the node by cross-correlating the first pattern and the second pattern, wherein the plurality of conditions include a presence of a fire and a presence of a person.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein using the first pattern and the second pattern to measure the presence of the condition within the predetermined area includes computing a correlation between the second pattern and a third pattern.

11. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the fiber optic detection system is configured to detect a plurality of conditions and the second pattern varies in response to each of the plurality of conditions.

12. The method according to claim 9 , wherein using the first pattern and the second pattern to measure at least one of the presence and magnitude comprises computing an autocorrelation.

13. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the condition includes smoke.

14. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the predetermined area is one of a building and an avionics bay of an aircraft.
