Abstract

A detection system for measuring one or more conditions within a predetermined area includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light, the at least one fiber optic cable defining a node arranged to measure one or more conditions within the predetermined area. A control system is operably coupled to the fiber harness such that scattered light associated with the node is transmitted to the control system, wherein the control system analyzes the light transmitted from the node by comparing multiple wavelengths of scattered light to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node.

Claims (30)

1. A detection system for measuring one or more conditions within a predetermined area comprising:

a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light, the at least one fiber optic cable defining a plurality of nodes arranged to measure one or more conditions within the predetermined area, the one or more conditions including smoke;

a light source for transmitting light along the at least one fiber optic cable; and

a control system operably coupled to the fiber harness such that scattered light associated with the plurality of nodes is transmitted to the control system, wherein the control system analyzes the light transmitted from the plurality of nodes by comparing multiple wavelengths of scattered light to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the plurality of nodes, the one or more conditions including smoke;

wherein multiple wavelengths of light are transmitted by the light source to enable simultaneous detection of multiple conditions, the control system directing selectively controlled emission of the multiple wavelengths of light from the light source;

wherein each fiber optic cable has a plurality of fiber branches extending therefrom, and each branch of the plurality of branches includes a node of the plurality of nodes; and

wherein light is transmitted from the light source through the node of the plurality of nodes into the predetermined area, and the scattered light is received at the same node of the plurality of nodes and transmitted to the control system.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more conditions includes the presence of one or more materials in the predetermined area.

3. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the one or more materials include one or more of volatile organic compounds, biological particles, particle pollutants, water, ice and/or chemicals or gaseous compounds.

4. The system according to claim 3 , wherein the gaseous compounds include one or more of H 2 , H 2 S, CO 2 , CO, NO 2 or NO 3 .

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein a control unit is operably coupled to the light source to selectively control emission of light along the at least one fiber optic cable.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the control system utilizes one or more of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy or Raman spectroscopy to analyze the scattered light.

7. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one light sensitive device operably coupled with the fiber harness, wherein the at least one light sensitive device receives scattered light from the plurality of nodes.

8. The system according to claim 7 wherein the control system is operably coupled to the at least one light sensitive device.

9. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the at least one light sensitive device converts the scattered light into an electrical signal receivable by the control unit.

10. A method of measuring one or more conditions within a predetermined area comprising:

transmitting light along a fiber optic cable to a plurality of nodes via a light source to measure the one or more conditions, the one or more conditions including smoke;

receiving scattered light from the plurality of nodes;

communicating the scattered light to a control system; and

analyzing the scattered light associated with the plurality of nodes to determine at least one of the presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions within the predetermined area

wherein multiple wavelengths of light are transmitted by the light source to enable simultaneous detection of multiple conditions, the control system directing selectively controlled emission of the multiple wavelengths of light from the light source;

wherein each fiber optic cable has a plurality of fiber branches extending therefrom, and each branch of the plurality of branches includes a node of the plurality of nodes; and

wherein light is transmitted from the light source through the node of the plurality of nodes into the predetermined area, and the scattered light is received at the same node of the plurality of nodes and transmitted to the control system.

11. The method according to claim 10 , wherein the one or more conditions includes the presence of one or more materials in the predetermined area.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the one or more materials includes one or more of volatile organic compounds, particle pollutants, biological particles and/or chemicals or gaseous compounds.

13. The method according to claim 12 , wherein the gaseous compounds include one or more of H 2 , H 2 S, CO 2 , CO, NO 2 or NO 3 .

14. The method according to claim 10 , wherein at least one light sensitive device is associated with at least one node of the plurality of nodes, the at least one light sensitive device is operably coupled to the control system.

15. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising converting scattered light to electrical signals before communicating the signals to the control system.

16. The method according to claim 10 , wherein associating scattered light with a corresponding node is dependent on of the length of fiber to the plurality of nodes and a time of flight between transmitting light from a light source and receiving the scattered light from the plurality of nodes.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the control system utilizes one or more of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy or Raman spectroscopy to analyze the scattered light.
