Abstract

An integrated communication and smoke detection system includes a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light, the at least one fiber optic cable defining a node arranged to measure one or more conditions at a predetermined area. A light source is operably connected to the fiber harness to transmit light along the at least one fiber optic cable to the node. A control system operably coupled to the fiber harness such that scattered light associated with the node is transmitted to the control system, wherein the control system analyzes the scattered light to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node. The control system is configured to allow multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information through the fiber harness and node using modulated light.

Claims (32)

1. An integrated communication and smoke detection system comprising:

a fiber harness having at least one fiber optic cable for transmitting light, the at least one fiber optic cable terminating in a node arranged to measure one or more conditions at a predetermined area;

a light source operably connected to the fiber harness to transmit light along the at least one fiber optic cable and through the node into the predetermined area; and

a control system operably coupled to the fiber harness such that scattered light received from the predetermined area at the node is transmitted from the node along the fiber optic cable to the control system, wherein the control system analyzes the scattered light to determine at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one or more conditions at the node;

wherein the control system is configured to allow multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information through the fiber harness and node using modulated light;

wherein the same fiber optic cable is additionally configured for communication of one or more of alarms, alerts and system diagnostic information through a building in which the system is installed.

2. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include an internet.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include a fire control panel.

4. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include a building network or management system.

5. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include information received by the node from the predetermined area.

6. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include information transmitted by the node to the predetermined area.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the node using modulated light communicates with building infrastructure and/or local devices within the predetermined area.

8. The system according to claim 7 , wherein the communication follows a LiFi protocol.

9. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising one or more alarm units operably connected to the fiber harness.

10. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the light source is a laser diode.

11. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising at least one photodiode associated with the node, wherein the at least one photodiode receives a signal from the node indicating a scattered light received by the node.

12. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the one or more conditions includes one or more of smoke or fire.

13. A method of smoke detection and communication within a predetermined area comprising:

transmitting an optical detection signal from a light source along a fiber optic cable through a node disposed at a termination of the fiber optic cable into the predetermined area to measure one or more conditions in the predetermined area;

receiving a scattered light from the from the predetermined area at the node;

communicating the scattered light from the node along the fiber optic cable to a control system;

determining whether the scattered light indicates at least one of a presence and magnitude of the one more conditions within the predetermined area via the control system; and

communicating information through the fiber harness optic cable and node via the control system using modulated light;

wherein the control system is configured to allow multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information through the fiber optic cable and node using modulated light;

wherein the same fiber optic cable is additionally configured for communication of one or more of alarms, alerts and system diagnostic information through a building in which the system is installed.

14. The method according to claim 13 , further comprising determining whether the scattered light is a communication signal.

15. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include an internet.

16. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include a fire control panel.

17. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include a building network or management system.

18. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include information received by the node from the predetermined area.

19. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the multiple inputs and outputs for communication of information include information transmitted by the node to the predetermined area.

20. The method according to claim 13 , wherein the node using modulated light communicates with building infrastructure and/or local devices within the predetermined area.
