Abstract

An accessory device is provided with one or more physical interlocks for mating with a slot provided along an accessory mounting track, or alternatively, with discrete physical mating interlocking features provided along an accessory mounting track, such as along opposing sides of the slot. In this way, the accessory device can be mounted along the slot in a lengthwise direction of the accessory mounting track or perpendicularly or transversely to the lengthwise direction of the accessory mounting track. When mounting in a lengthwise direction of the accessory mounting track, the accessory device is prevented from moving along the accessory mounting track when sufficient frictional forces are applied. When mounting perpendicularly or transversely to the lengthwise direction of the accessory mounting track, the interlocks mate with the interlocking features to prevent movement of the accessory device along the accessory mounting track.

Claims (44)

1. An accessory mounting track in combination with an accessory device, the combination comprising:

the accessory mounting track comprises:

a slot along the accessory mounting track for passage of a threaded stud of a fastener, and

one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features along the accessory mounting track, and

the accessory device comprising:

one or more physical interlocks on the accessory device that mate with one or more of the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features to resist or interfere with movement or translation of the accessory device in relation to the accessory mounting track when tightening the accessory device in relation to the accessory mounting track, wherein

the accessory device is attachable and removable to and from the accessory mounting track at one or more discrete positions corresponding to one or more of the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features along the accessory mounting track, or alternatively, the accessory device is attachable and removable to and from the accessory mounting track with the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features mating with the slot anywhere along the slot so that the position of the accessory device is not restricted to the one or more discrete positions of the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features along the accessory mounting track.

2. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features along the accessory mounting track comprises one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features selected from a group consisting of one or more recesses or pockets provided along opposing sides of the accessory mounting track; and

the one or more physical interlocks comprises one or more physical interlocks selected from a group consisting essentially of keys, tabs or nodules that cooperate with the one or more recesses or pockets provided along opposing sides of the accessory mounting track or alternatively, the slot along the track.

3. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features comprises a plurality of discrete physical mating interlocking features and the one or more physical interlocks comprises a plurality of physical interlocks at a plurality of discrete positions corresponding to a plurality of the plurality of discrete physical mating interlocking features along the accessory mounting track.

4. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the accessory device is in the form of a cleat, which is in the form of a T-shaped piece that is adapted for use on a personal watercraft or boat, and to which a rope may be attached.

5. The combination of claim 4 , wherein

the cleat is formed from wood, metal, plastic or other suitable material.

6. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the fastener is a T-bolt, and

the accessory device includes a knob that threadably cooperates with the T-bolt, the knob comprising a female threaded through hole for receiving the threaded stud of the T-bolt, and wherein

threading the knob in relation to the threaded stud of the T-bolt toward the accessory device tightens the accessory device in relation to the accessory mounting track.

7. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the accessory mounting track comprises mounting holes for receiving fasteners for fastening the accessory mounting track to an environmental surface.

8. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the accessory device is attachable to the accessory mounting track perpendicularly or transversely in relation to a lengthwise direction of the accessory mounting track by the one or more physical interlocks on the accessory device mating with one or more of the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features or alternatively, in the lengthwise direction of the accessory mounting track by the one or more physical interlocks on the accessory device mating with the slot along the accessory mounting track.

9. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the accessory mounting track comprises a first support flange, a second support flange, and a central axis, which is substantially parallel to the slot, the accessory mounting track further comprising at least a first end with a first slot entry point for receiving a T-bolt.

10. The combination of claim 9 , wherein

the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features comprises a plurality of interlocking features disposed along the first support flange and along the second support flange in spaced relation to one another, so that the interlocking features along the first support flange align with corresponding interlocking features along the second support flange.

11. The combination of claim 10 , wherein

the interlocking features along the first support flange and corresponding interlocking features along the second support flange are spaced a distance and the one or more interlocks comprise at least two interlocks spaced a distance approximately the same as the distance between the interlocking features along the first support flange and the interlocking features along the second support flange.

12. The combination of claim 9 , wherein

the fastener is a T-bolt, and

the accessory device is attached to the accessory mounting track by inserting the T-bolt in the first slot entry point, and further until the threaded stud of the T-bolt enters the slot and a head of the T-bolt enters a channel below the slot, and wherein rotation of the head in the channel is restricted by a containment ledge along opposing sides of the channel, and wherein the head is prevented from escaping from the channel by the containment ledge along the opposing sides of the channel.

13. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features comprises a plurality of interlocking features, wherein the plurality of interlocking features each has a width, the slot has a width, and the one of more physical interlocks each has a width, wherein the width of the one or more physical interlocks is the same or approximately the same as the width of the slot, and wherein

the width of one or more physical interlocks is the same or approximately the same width as the width of each of the plurality of interlocking features, so that the one or more physical interlocks are configured to mate with the plurality of interlocking features, or alternatively, with the slot.

14. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the one or more physical interlocks comprises a plurality of spaced interlocks extending downward from the accessory device.

15. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the one or more physical interlocks comprises a plurality of interlocks in linear alignment with each other.

16. The combination of claim 1 , wherein

the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features comprises serrations or a saw tooth configuration that cooperate with one or more of the physical interlocks having similar serrations or a similar saw tooth configuration.

17. The combination of claim 16 , wherein

the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features and the one or more physical interlocks are angled such that the accessory device is adjustable more easily to a discrete location by pushing the accessory device along an axis of the accessory mounting track, rather than lifting and sliding the accessory device, when the tension of a T-bolt is sufficiently loosened to allow the accessory device to disengage the one or more discrete physical mating interlocking features.
