Abstract

A person-detection device that automatically configures itself as a motion sensor or an occupancy sensor upon receiving a command from a home security panel or home automation hub.

Claims (52)

1. A method, comprising:

operating a person detection device (PDD) in a motion sensor mode of operation;

receiving via a transceiver of the PDD from a remote transmission source, while the PDD is operating in the motion sensor mode of operation, a command to change a mode of operation of the PDD;

in response to receiving the command, causing the PDD to configure itself to operate in an occupancy sensor mode of operation; and

operating the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation;

wherein operating the PDD in the motion sensor mode of operation comprises: detecting, via a person detector of the PDD, that a first person is present in an area being monitored by the PDD; determining, by the PDD, that a first dwell time has expired; and transmitting, by the transceiver of the PDD, a person-present signal only when the first dwell time has expired, and operating the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation comprises: detecting, by via the person detector of the PDD, that a second person is present in an area being monitored by the PDD; determining, by the PDD, that a second dwell time has expired, the second dwell time being less than the first dwell time; and transmitting, by the transceiver of the PDD, a person-present signal only when the second dwell time has expired.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the person detector comprises a single sensor.

3. A method, comprising:

operating a person detection device (PDD) in a motion sensor mode of operation;

receiving via a transceiver of the PDD from a remote transmission source, while the PDD is operating in the motion sensor mode of operation, a command to change a mode of operation of the PDD;

in response to receiving the command, causing the PDD to configure itself to operate in an occupancy sensor mode of operation; and

operating the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation;

wherein operating the PDD in the occupancy mode of operation comprises: comparing, by the PDD, an elapsed time from when a first person was detected by a person detector of the PDD to a previous time when the first person was detected to a first dwell time that is shorter in duration than a second dwell time that is used by the PDD in the motion sensor mode of operation.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein the command comprises the first dwell time and operating the PDD in the occupancy mode of operation comprises: storing, by the PDD, the first dwell time in a memory of the PDD; and comparing, by the PDD, the elapsed time to the first dwell time when the first person is detected.

5. A method, comprising:

operating a person detection device (PDD) in a motion sensor mode of operation;

receiving via a transceiver of the PDD from a remote transmission source, while the PDD is operating in the motion sensor mode of operation, a command to change a mode of operation of the PDD;

in response to receiving the command, causing the PDD to configure itself to operate in an occupancy sensor mode of operation; and

operating the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation;

wherein operating the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation comprises: monitoring, by the PDD, a subset of thermal elements of a thermal detection device of the PDD; determining, by the PDD, a possibility that a person is in an area being monitored by the PDD as a result of monitoring the subset of thermal elements; in response to determining a possibility that a person is in the area, monitoring, by the PDD, all of the thermal elements; and determining, by the PDD, that a person is in the area based on monitoring all of the thermal elements.

6. A person detection device (PDD) for detecting motion and occupancy of a person in an area, comprising:

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions;

a person detector;

a transceiver for sending and receiving wireless signals;

a processer coupled to the person detector, the memory and the transceiver, for executing the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to:

operate in a motion sensor mode of operation;

receive, via the transceiver from a remote transmission source, a command to change a mode of operation of the PDD while the PDD is operating in the motion sensor mode of operation;

cause the PDD to be configured to operate in an occupancy sensor mode of operation in response to receiving the command; and

operate the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation;

wherein the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to operate in the motion sensor mode of operation cause the PDD to: detect, via the person detector, that a first person is present in an area being monitored by the PDD; determine that a first dwell time has expired; and transmit, via the transceiver, a person-present signal only when the first dwell time has expired, and the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to operate in the occupancy mode of operation cause the PDD to: detect, via the person detector, that a second person is present in an area being monitored by the PDD; determine that a second dwell time has expired, the second dwell time being less than the first dwell time; and transmit, via the transceiver, a person-present signal only when the second dwell time has expired.

7. The PDD of claim 6 , wherein the person detector comprises a single sensor.

8. A person detection device (PDD) for detecting motion and occupancy of a person in an area, comprising:

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions;

a person detector;

a transceiver for sending and receiving wireless signals;

a processer coupled to the person detector, the memory and the transceiver, for executing the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to:

operate in a motion sensor mode of operation;

receive, via the transceiver from a remote transmission source, a command to change a mode of operation of the PDD while the PDD is operating in the motion sensor mode of operation;

cause the PDD to be configured to operate in an occupancy sensor mode of operation in response to receiving the command; and

operate the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation;

wherein the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to operate in the occupancy mode of operation cause the PDD to: compare an elapsed time from when the first person was detected by the processor to a previous time when the first person was detected to a first dwell time that is shorter in duration than a second dwell time used while the PDD is operating in the motion sensor mode of operation.

9. The PDD of claim 8 , wherein the command comprises the first dwell time, and wherein the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to operate in the occupancy mode of operation cause the PDD to: store the first dwell time in the memory; and compare the elapsed time to the first dwell time when the first person is detected.

10. A person detection device (PDD) for detecting motion and occupancy of a person in an area, comprising:

a memory for storing processor-executable instructions;

a thermal detection device;

a transceiver for sending and receiving wireless signals;

a processer coupled to the thermal detection device, the memory and the transceiver, for executing the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to:

operate in a motion sensor mode of operation;

receive, via the transceiver from a remote transmission source, a command to change a mode of operation of the PDD while the PDD is operating in the motion sensor mode of operation;

cause the PDD to be configured to operate in an occupancy sensor mode of operation in response to receiving the command; and

operate the PDD in the occupancy sensor mode of operation;

wherein the processor-executable instructions that cause the PDD to operate in the occupancy sensor mode of operation cause the PDD to: monitor a subset of thermal elements of the thermal detection device; determine a possibility that a person is in an area being monitored by the PDD as a result of monitoring the subset of thermal elements; monitor all of the thermal elements in response to determining that it is possible that a person is in the area; and determine that a person is in the area based on monitoring all of the thermal elements.
