Abstract

A communication system includes an earth station configured to receive a downlink transmission from a satellite and transmit an uplink transmission to the satellite. The communication system further includes a server in operable communication with the earth station, a beacon detector in operable communication with the server, an access point configured to operate within a proximity of the earth station, and a beacon transmitter disposed within close proximity to the access point. The beacon transmitter is configured to transmit a beacon signal to one or more of the server and the beacon detector. The beacon signal uniquely identifies the access point. The server is configured to implement a measurement-based protection scheme with respect to at least one of the downlink transmission and the uplink transmission.

Claims (26)

1. A communication system, comprising:

an earth station including a beacon detector;

a central server in operable communication with the earth station;

an access point (AP) configured to operate within a proximity of the earth station; and

a beacon transmitter disposed within close proximity to the AP, the beacon transmitter configured to transmit a beacon signal to the beacon detector, wherein the beacon signal uniquely identifies the AP,

wherein the server is configured to implement a measurement-based protection scheme with respect to the earth station, and

wherein the measurement-based protection scheme includes instructions to the beacon transmitter for parameters by which the beacon signal is transmitted.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the beacon signal includes a series of Zadoff-Chu sequences.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein a cross-correlation between at least two Zadoff-Chu sequences of the series of Zadoff-Chu sequences has a constant output value.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the measurement-based protection scheme comprises a closed loop configuration.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the measurement-based protection scheme is configured such that the instructions are based on real-time propagation measurements within the communication system.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the parameters are configured such that a transmit power level of the beacon signal is configured to cause no measurable interference within the proximity of the earth station.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the parameters comprise at least one of the transmit power level, a sequence length of the beacon signal, a central frequency of the beacon signal, and a bandwidth of the beacon signal.

8. The system of claim 7 , wherein the AP is configured to transmit the beacon signal according to a standardized format that carries a beacon identifier that uniquely identifies the AP.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the AP comprises a small cell.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the central server comprises an extendable spectrum access system (eSAS) in operable communication with the small cell.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the eSAS is configured to initiate a path loss measurement between the AP and the earth station.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the eSAS is further configured to, upon, initiation of the path loss measurement, send a set of Zadoff-Chu root indices and the parameters to the beacon detector.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the beacon detector is configured to extract a beacon identifier from the set of Zadoff-Chu root indices received from the eSAS.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the beacon detector is further configured to (i) derive a received power level corresponding to the extracted beacon identifier, and (ii) report the derived power level to the eSAS.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the eSAS is further configured to calculate relevant path loss values from the derived power level reported by the beacon detector.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the beacon transmitter is configured to assign a predetermined number of digits to the beacon identifier mapped to a number of root indices in the set of Zadoff-Chu root indices.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the beacon detector is further configured to extract the beacon identifier by (i) down-converting the beacon signal into a baseband signal, and (ii) sampling a random section of the baseband signal at a number of sampling points based in part on the predetermined number of digits.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein a power spectral density of the AP and the beacon signal, measured at the earth station, is less than a link budget of the earth station.

19. The system of claim 18 , wherein the AP comprises a plurality of small cells, and wherein the beacon signal comprises a plurality of unique beacon signals corresponding to each small cell of the plurality of small cells, respectively.

20. The system of claim 19 , wherein the power spectral density of an aggregate of the plurality of small cells and the plurality of unique beacon signals is less than the link budget.
