Robotic surgical systems with mechanisms for scaling surgical tool motion according to tissue proximity
View Patent ↗A surgical system is disclosed including a surgical tool, a motor operably coupled to the surgical tool, and a control circuit coupled to the motor. The control circuit is configured to receive an instrument motion control signal indicative of a user input, cause the motor to move the surgical tool in response to the instrument motion control signal, receive an input signal indicative of a distance between the surgical tool and tissue, and scale the movement of the surgical tool to the user input in accordance with the input signal.
1. A surgical system, comprising:
a surgical tool comprising:
an optical waveform emitter configured to emit an array of electromagnetic radiation; and
a waveform sensor configured to detect an effect of emitted electromagnetic radiation and generate a signal associated with the effect;
a motor operably coupled to the surgical tool; and
a control circuit coupled to the surgical tool and the motor, wherein the control circuit is configured to:
receive an instrument motion control signal indicative of a user input;
cause the motor to move the surgical tool in response to the instrument motion control signal;
determine a distance between the surgical tool and tissue by:
causing the optical waveform emitter to emit electromagnetic radiation;
receiving the signal from the waveform sensor;
calculating a time-of-flight of the emitted electromagnetic radiation reflected by the tissue; and
determining the distance between the surgical tool and the tissue based, at least in part, on the calculated time-of-flight; and
scale a movement of the surgical tool to the user input based, at least in part, on the determined distance.
2. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to scale the movement of the surgical tool to the user input while the distance is greater than or equal to a threshold.
3. The surgical system of claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to deactivate the scaling of the movement of the surgical tool to the user input when the distance is below the threshold.
4. The surgical system of claim 2 , wherein the threshold is a first threshold, and wherein the control circuit is configured to adjust the scaling in accordance with the distance while the distance is between the first threshold and a second threshold.
5. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising an input control device configured to transmit the instrument motion control signal to the control circuit.
6. The surgical system of claim 5 , wherein the input control device comprises a sensor for measuring a parameter of the user input.
7. The surgical system of claim 6 , wherein the sensor is a force sensor, and wherein the parameter is a force applied to the input control device.
8. The surgical system of claim 1 , wherein scaling the movement of the surgical tool comprises adjusting a force required to move the surgical tool at a given speed.
9. The surgical system of claim 1 , further comprising a display coupled to the control circuit, wherein the display is configured to receive a user selection and generate signals associated with user selection, and wherein the control circuit is further configured to:
determine a motion scaling profile from a plurality of predetermined motion scaling profiles to display to a user of the surgical system based, at least in part, on the determined distance; and
cause the display to present the determined motion scaling profile;
receive a signal from the display associated with the user selection of the determined motion scaling profile; and
scale the movement of the surgical tool to the user input based, at least in part, on the user selected motion scaling profile.
10. A surgical system, comprising:
a surgical tool comprising:
an optical waveform emitter configured to emit an array of electromagnetic radiation; and
a waveform sensor configured to detect an effect of emitted electromagnetic radiation and generate a signal associated with the effect;
a motor operably coupled to the surgical tool; and
a control circuit coupled to the motor, wherein the control circuit is configured to:
receive an instrument motion control signal indicative of a user input;
cause the motor to move the surgical tool in response to the instrument motion control signal;
determine a distance between the surgical tool and tissue by:
causing the optical waveform emitter to emit electromagnetic radiation;
receiving the signal from the waveform sensor;
calculating a time-of-flight of the emitted electromagnetic radiation reflected by the tissue; and
determining the distance between the surgical tool and the tissue based, at least in part, on the calculated time-of-flight; and
scale a movement of the surgical tool to the user input based, at least in part, on the determined distance.
11. The surgical system of claim 10 , wherein the control circuit is configured to scale the movement of the surgical tool to the user input while the distance is greater than or equal to a threshold.
12. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuit is configured to deactivate the scaling of the movement of the surgical tool to the user input when the distance is below the threshold.
13. The surgical system of claim 11 , wherein the threshold is a first threshold, and wherein the control circuit is configured to adjust the scaling in accordance with the distance while the distance is between the first threshold and a second threshold.
14. The surgical system of claim 10 , further comprising an input control device configured to transmit the instrument motion control signal to the control circuit.
15. The surgical system of claim 14 , wherein the input control device comprises a sensor for measuring a parameter of the user input.
16. The surgical system of claim 15 , wherein the sensor is a force sensor, and wherein the parameter is a force applied to the input control device.
17. A surgical system, comprising:
a surgical tool comprising:
an optical waveform emitter configured to emit an array of electromagnetic radiation; and
a waveform sensor configured to detect an effect of emitted electromagnetic radiation and generate a signal associated with the effect;
a motor operably coupled to the surgical tool; and
a control circuit coupled to the motor, wherein the control circuit is configured to:
receive an instrument motion control signal indicative of a user input;
cause the motor to move the surgical tool in response to the instrument motion control signal;
determine a distance between the surgical tool and tissue by:
causing the optical waveform emitter to emit electromagnetic radiation;
receiving the signal from the waveform sensor;
calculating a time-of-flight of the emitted electromagnetic radiation reflected by the tissue; and
determining the distance between the surgical tool and the tissue based, at least in part, on the calculated time-of-flight; and
select between a gross motion mode and a fine motion mode of the surgical tool based, at least in part, on the determined distance between the surgical tool and the tissue.
18. The surgical system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuit is configured to select the gross motion mode when the determined distance is indicative of a distance greater than or equal to a threshold.
19. The surgical system of claim 17 , wherein the control circuit is configured to select the fine motion mode when the determined distance is indicative of a distance less than or equal to a threshold.
