Abstract

Methods and systems are provided for communication between moving objects and land-based systems. A virtual multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) array may be established for communications between a transportation object and a communication network. The virtual MIMO array may include at least a network transceiver of the communication network that is in proximity to the transportation object or a path of the transportation object, and at least a first transceiver and a second transceiver from a plurality of transceivers in the transportation object. Communications may be setup with the network transceiver via the first transceiver, and the communications may be configured for use of the virtual MIMO array. The configuring may include determining when the second transceiver comes within communication range of the network transceiver due to movement of the transportation object, and based on the determination, communicating at least some signals via the second transceiver using the virtual MIMO array.

Claims (44)

1. A method comprising:

establishing a virtual multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) array for communications between a transportation object and a communication network, wherein the virtual MIMO array comprises:

at least a network transceiver of the communication network that is in proximity to the transportation object or a path of the transportation object, and

at least a first transceiver and a second transceiver from a plurality of transceivers in the transportation object;

setting up communications with the network transceiver via the first transceiver;

configuring the communications for use of the virtual MIMO array, wherein the configuring comprises:

determining when the second transceiver comes within communication range of the network transceiver due to movement of the transportation object; and

based on the determining, communicating at least some signals via the second transceiver using the virtual MIMO array.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising configuring the communications based on one or more cooperative communication schemes.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the one or more cooperative communication schemes comprise one or both of:

use of spatial diversity by concurrently transmitting a signal on multiple communication channels; and

use of spatial multiplexing by transmitting different segments of the signal via different communication channels.

4. The method of claim 1 , comprising controlling the communications based on one or both of:

information relating to the movement of the transportation object; and

information relating to relative positions of the plurality of transceivers within the transportation object.

5. The method of claim 4 , comprising generating information relating to one or both of the movement of the transportation object and to the relative positions of the plurality of transceivers within the transportation object.

6. The method of claim 5 , comprising transmitting at least some of the generated information to the network transceiver.

7. The method of one of claim 1 , comprising configuring the communications based on channel related data associated with the virtual MIMO array.

8. The method of one of claim 7 , comprising determining the channel related data, based on one or both of channel related measurements in the first transceiver, and channel related measurements in the network transceiver.

9. The method of claim 1 , comprising setting up multiple communication channels for communicating via the virtual MIMO array.

10. The method of claim 9 , comprising communicating concurrently via the multiple communication channels of the virtual MIMO array.

11. A system for use in a transportation object to provide wireless communication, the system comprising:

a plurality of transceivers; and

one or more communication circuits configured to:

establish a virtual multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) array for communications between the transportation object and a communication network, wherein the virtual MIMO array comprises:

at least a network transceiver of the communication network that is in proximity to the transportation object or a path of the transportation object, and

at least a first transceiver and a second transceiver from a plurality of transceivers in the transportation object;

setup up communications with the network transceiver via the first transceiver; and

configure the communications for use of the virtual MIMO array, wherein the configuring comprises:

determining when the second transceiver comes within communication range of the network transceiver due to movement of the transportation object; and

based on the determining, communicating at least some signals via the second transceiver using the virtual MIMO array.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more communication circuits are configured to control the communications based on one or more cooperative communication schemes.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the one or more communication circuits are configured to, when controlling the communications based on one or more cooperative communication schemes, incorporate use of one or both of:

use of spatial diversity by concurrently transmitting a signal on multiple communication channels; and

spatial multiplexing by transmitting different segments of the signal via different communication channels.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more communication circuits are configured to control the communications based on one or both of:

information relating to movement of the transportation object; and

information relating to relative positions of the plurality of transceivers within the transportation object.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more communication circuits are configured to generate information relating to one or both of the movement of the transportation object and to the relative positions of the plurality of transceivers within the transportation object.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more communication circuits are configured to control the communications based on channel related data associated with the virtual MIMO array.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the one or more communication circuits are configured to determine the channel related data, based on one or both of channel related measurements in the first transceiver, and channel related measurements in the network transceiver.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of transceivers is arranged in the transportation object such that each one of the plurality of transceivers travels through a same path when the transportation object is moving.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein the one or more communication circuits are configured to setup up multiple communication channels for communicating via the virtual MIMO array.
