Abstract

A computer system determines location probabilities for defined sub-areas ( 41, 43 ) of a geographical area ( 4 ), e.g. for squares arranged in a grid ( 40 ), based on field strengths expected in the small sub-areas ( 41, 43 ) from the antennas (A 1 , A 2 A 3 , A 4 ), and based on the antenna used by the mobile communication terminal. The location probabilities indicate for a sub-area ( 41, 43 ) the probability that the mobile communication terminal is located in the respective sub-area ( 41, 43 ). The computer system determines at least one ellipse defining the location area, based on the location probabilities of the sub-areas ( 41, 43 ). The location probabilities make it possible to determine elliptical location areas of mobile users much smaller than the area each antenna does cover physically, but without the need for measuring at the mobile communication terminal signal properties such as signal strength or observed time differences.

the first probability is a likelihood that a signal received in the first area from the first base station would have a strength above the measured signal strength, and

the second probability is a likelihood that a signal received in the first area from a second base station would have a strength below the measured signal strength;

determining a second area probability indicative of the mobile device being located within a second area, wherein:

the second area probability is based on a product of a third probability and a fourth probability,

the third probability is a likelihood that a signal received in the second area from the first base station would have a strength above the measured signal strength, and

the fourth probability is a likelihood that a signal received in the second area from the second base station would have a strength below the measured signal strength; and

determining whether the mobile device is located in the first area or the second area according to a comparison of the first area probability and the second area probability; and

determining a third area probability if a difference between the first area probability and the second area probability is no more than a threshold amount.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first probability is calculated from a distribution associated with the first base station and the first area.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second probability is calculated from a distribution associated with the second base station and the first area.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third probability is calculated from a distribution associated with the first base station and the second area.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first probability is a likelihood that a signal received in the first area from the first base station would have a strength no more than a threshold amount above the measured signal strength.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the third probability is a likelihood that a signal received in the second area from the first base station would have a strength no more than a threshold amount above the measured signal strength.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is determined to be located in the first area if the first area probability is greater than the second area probability.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the mobile device is determined to be located in the first area if the first area probability is greater than the second area probability and if the first area probability is above a threshold.
