Abstract

Apparatus and methods are provided to remove biopsy specimens from a bone and/or associated bone marrow using a powered driver and an intraosseous (IO) needle set. The powered driver may rotate the IO needle set at an optimum speed to obtain a biopsy sample of bone and/or bone marrow. Apparatus and methods may also be provided for aspiration of bone marrow and/or stem cell transplant procedures. The apparatus may include a powered driver, a coupler assembly, a containment bag or sterile sleeve and various IO needles and IO needle sets with associated hubs and/or hub assemblies. Each IO needle set may include a cannula or catheter and an associated trocar stylet with respective tips operable to penetrate a bone and/or bone marrow with minimum trauma to a patient. Each hub assembly may be used to releasably dispose a respective stylet within an associated generally hollow cannula. Some coupler assemblies and/or hub assemblies may also be used with manual drivers.

Claims (30)

1. A coupler assembly for coupling an intraosseous device with a powered driver, the coupler assembly comprising:

a first end operable to releasably engage the intraosseous device operable to penetrate a bone and associated bone marrow;

a second end operable to releasably engage the powered driver;

an elongated core having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion of the elongated core configured to receive a portion of the intraosseous device, and the second portion of the elongated core configured to receive a portion of a drive shaft of the powered driver, the elongated core operable to rotate in response to rotation of the drive shaft of the powered driver; and

a housing assembly slidably disposed on an exterior portion of the elongated core and operable to move along a longitudinal length of the elongated core,

the housing assembly including an interior a shoulder configured to contact an exterior shoulder of the elongated core to limit longitudinal movement of the housing assembly along the elongated core, and

the housing assembly configured to not rotate with the elongated core during rotation of the elongated core by the powered driver.

2. The coupler assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a containment bag securely engaged with the housing assembly, the containment bag having a first opening and a second opening.

3. The coupler assembly according to claim 2 , wherein the second opening of the containment bag is configured to receive the powered driver therethrough.

4. The coupler assembly according to claim 3 , further comprising a closure mechanism operable to releasably close the second opening of the containment bag after the powered driver has been releasably engaged with the second end of the coupler assembly.

5. The coupler assembly according to claim 2 , further comprising a fluid barrier disposed between the first opening of the containment bag and adjacent portions of the coupler assembly.

6. The coupler assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the housing assembly includes a first housing segment and a second housing segment, the first housing segment slidable along the longitudinal length of the elongated core between a first extended position and a first retracted position, and the second housing segment slidable along the longitudinal length of the elongated core between a second extended position and a second retracted position.

7. The coupler assembly according to claim 6 ,

wherein the first housing segment and the second housing segment are configured to not rotate with the elongated core during rotation of the elongated core by the powered driver.

8. The coupler assembly according to claim 6 , further comprising a biasing mechanism disposed between the housing assembly and the elongated core, the biasing mechanism operable to bias the first housing segment to the first extended position and bias the second housing segment to the second extended position.

9. The coupler assembly according to claim 1 , further comprising a biasing mechanism disposed between an interior shoulder of the housing assembly and the exterior shoulder of the elongated core.

10. The coupler assembly according to claim 8 , wherein the biasing mechanism is configured to contact an annular shoulder disposed proximate a first end of the second housing segment of the housing assembly to maintain the first housing segment of the housing assembly in the first extended position and the second housing segment of the housing assembly in the second extended position.

11. The coupler assembly according to claim 8 , wherein the biasing mechanism is configured to contact an interior shoulder of the housing assembly and an annular shoulder disposed proximate a first end of the second housing segment of the housing assembly to limit a longitudinal movement of the first housing segment in a direction toward the second end of the elongated core during disengagement of the intraosseous device from the first end of the coupler assembly.

12. The coupler assembly according to claim 6 , wherein a second exterior shoulder of the elongated core is configured to limit movement of the second housing segment of the housing assembly longitudinally in a direction toward the second end of the elongated core.

13. The coupler assembly according to claim 6 , further comprising a generally cylindrical ring slidably disposed around the elongated core.

14. The coupler assembly according to claim 13 , wherein the cylindrical ring includes an annular shoulder disposed on an interior portion thereof, the annular shoulder of the cylindrical ring configured to engage a second exterior shoulder of the elongated core to limit movement of the second housing segment of the housing assembly longitudinally in a direction toward the second end of the elongated core.

15. The coupler assembly according to claim 6 , wherein the second housing segment of the housing assembly is configured to move relative to the elongated core and the first housing segment of the housing assembly.

16. The coupler assembly according to claim 1 , wherein the first end of the coupler assembly further includes a first latch mechanism having a detent operable to releasably extend into and retract from an associated opening proximate the first end of coupler assembly.

17. The coupler assembly according to claim 16 , wherein the second end of the coupler assembly further includes a second latch mechanism having a detent operable to releasably extend into and retract from an associated opening proximate the second end of the coupler assembly.

18. The coupler assembly according to claim 17 , wherein the detent of the first latch mechanism disposed in the first end of the coupler assembly is configured to releasably engage with an annular groove of the intraosseous device.

19. The coupler assembly according to claim 17 , wherein the detent of the second latch mechanism disposed in the second end of the coupler assembly is configured to releasably engage an annular groove of the drive shaft extending from the powered driver.

20. An apparatus operable to couple an intraosseous device with a powered driver, the apparatus comprising:

a core having a first portion and a second portion, the first portion configured to releasably engage an intraosseous device operable to penetrate a bone and associated bone marrow, and the second portion configured to releasably engage a powered d river, the core operable to rotate together with the intraosseous device;

a housing slidably disposed on exterior portions of the core, the housing configured to contact an exterior shoulder of the core to limit longitudinal movement of the housing assembly along the core, and

the housing configured to not rotate with the core while the powered driver rotates the core.
