Abstract

A telescopic side arm for a refuse vehicle has an inner and outer boom. A mounting assembly secures the outer boom with a refuse vehicle. A plurality of bearing pads is positioned between the inner and outer booms to provide smooth movement between the inner and outer booms. A plurality of shims is associated with the bearing pads to assure a tight fit between the inner and outer booms.

Claims (53)

1. A method for assembling a side arm for a refuse vehicle, comprising:

inserting a bearing pad into a bearing pad bracket;

coupling the bearing pad bracket to an inner boom with a first mechanical fastener and coupling the bearing pad to the inner boom with a second mechanical fastener;

inserting the inner boom with the bearing pad and the bearing pad bracket into an elongated bore of an outer boom, the inner boom and the outer boom comprising a telescopic arm assembly with an outer surface of the bearing pad contacting an inner surface of the bore of the outer boom;

coupling the telescopic arm assembly to the refuse vehicle;

inserting a shim comprising a body having a pair of legs connected by a web between the bearing pad and the inner boom, wherein the second mechanical fastener resides in a gap between the legs of the inserted shim;

coupling the shim to the bearing pad bracket; and

tightening the first and second mechanical fasteners coupling the bearing pad bracket and the bearing pad to the inner boom.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearing pad bracket comprises a plate having an opening for receiving the inserted bearing pad.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the bearing pad bracket comprises a tab orthogonal to the plate, and wherein the tab comprises an aperture for receiving the first mechanical fastener.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

securing the bearing pad to the bearing pad bracket before coupling the bearing pad bracket to the inner boom.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein coupling the bearing pad bracket to the inner boom comprises aligning the bearing pad with an outer surface of the inner boom.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

inserting a second bearing pad into a second bearing pad bracket; and

coupling the second bearing pad bracket with the second bearing pad to the inner boom.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the second bearing pad bracket comprises a body with three sides, and wherein each side of the three sides comprises a separate opening for receiving one of the second set of bearing pads.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein each side of the three sides of the second bearing pad bracket is at an obtuse angle relative to an adjacent side of the second bearing pad bracket.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the second bearing pad bracket further comprises a tab orthogonal to the three sides of the body.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

before inserting the inner boom into the elongated bore of the outer boom, coupling a third bearing pad bracket with a third bearing pad to the outer boom.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein coupling the telescopic arm assembly to the refuse vehicle comprises:

inserting a journal into an aperture of a mounting bracket supported by the refuse vehicle;

coupling the outer boom to a cylindrical bearing; and

mounting the cylindrical bearing to the journal.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein mounting the cylindrical bearing to the journal comprises fastening a pillow block over the bearing to the outer boom.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein further comprising:

securing the telescopic arm assembly to the mounting bracket by fastening a puller plate to the journal.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bearing pad bracket comprises a tab orthogonal to a plate, and wherein inserting the shim between the bearing pad and the inner boom comprises inserting the legs of the shim through a space between the tab and the plate.

15. A method for assembling a side arm for a refuse vehicle, comprising:

inserting a bearing pad into an opening of a bearing pad bracket, the bearing pad bracket comprising a plate having the opening and a tab orthogonal to the plate;

securing the bearing pad to the bearing pad bracket;

coupling the bearing pad bracket to an inner boom with a first mechanical fastener and coupling the bearing pad to the inner boom with a second mechanical fastener;

inserting the inner boom with the bearing pad and the bearing pad bracket into an elongated bore of an outer boom, the inner boom and the outer boom comprising a telescopic arm assembly with an outer surface of the bearing pad contacting an inner surface of the bore of the outer boom;

coupling the telescopic arm assembly to the refuse vehicle;

inserting a shim through a space between the tab and the plate of the bearing pad bracket to a position between the bearing pad and the inner boom, wherein the shim comprises a body having a pair of legs connected by a web, and wherein the second mechanical fastener resides in a gap between the legs of the inserted shim;

coupling the shim to the bearing pad bracket; and

tightening the first and second mechanical fasteners coupling the bearing pad bracket and the bearing pad to the inner boom.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein coupling the bearing pad bracket to the inner boom comprises aligning the plate of the bearing pad bracket and the bearing pad with an outer surface of the inner boom.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

inserting a second bearing pad into a second bearing pad bracket; and

coupling the second bearing pad bracket with the second bearing pad to the inner boom,

wherein the second bearing pad bracket comprises a body with three sides, and wherein each side of the three sides comprises a separate opening for receiving the second bearing pad, and

wherein each side of the three sides of the second bearing pad bracket is at an obtuse angle relative to an adjacent side of the second bearing pad bracket.

18. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

before inserting the inner boom into the elongated bore of the outer boom, coupling a third bearing pad bracket with a third bearing pad to the outer boom.

19. The method of claim 15 , wherein coupling the telescopic arm assembly to the refuse vehicle comprises:

inserting a journal into an aperture of a mounting bracket supported by the refuse vehicle;

coupling the outer boom to a cylindrical bearing; and

mounting the cylindrical bearing to the journal.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein mounting the cylindrical bearing to the journal comprises fastening a pillow block over the bearing to the outer boom.

21. The method of claim 19 , wherein further comprising:

securing the telescopic arm assembly to the mounting bracket by fastening a puller plate to the journal.
