Abstract

Methods for cutting strengthened glass are disclosed. The methods can include using a laser. The strengthened glass can include chemically strengthened, heat strengthened, and heat tempered glass. Strengthened glass with edges showing indicia of a laser cutting process are also disclosed. The strengthened glass can include an electrochromic film.

Claims (23)

1. An electrochromic composite comprising:

a strengthened glass substrate having a first surface, an opposing second surface, and a peripheral edge between the first surface and second surface, the peripheral edge having indicia of a laser filamentation cutting process, wherein the indicia comprise filamentation traces wherein each of the plurality of filamentation traces comprises a filamentation length and a filamentation width and an aspect ratio of greater than about 10:1 as defined by the ratio of the filamentation length to the filamentation width;

an electrically conductive layer supported on the first surface of the strengthened glass substrate; and

an electrochromic layer in electronic communication with the electrically conductive layer;

wherein the peripheral edge of the strengthened glass has a probability of failure of less than about 5% under a 40 MPa load.

2. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral edge of the strengthened glass has a modulus of rupture of greater than 100 MPa and a Weibull modulus greater than 10.

3. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , further comprising a coating on the peripheral edge of the strengthened glass comprising metal, oxide material, or a polymer layer.

4. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein the indicia of a laser filamentation cutting process comprises an edge surface having an average surface roughness of not more than 5 microns root mean square.

5. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein each of the filamentation traces extends from the first surface toward the second surface to a depth of at least 75% of the thickness as detected by optical microscopy.

6. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein each of the filamentation traces extends from the first surface toward the second surface to a depth of at least 90% of the thickness as detected by optical microscopy.

7. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein each of the filamentation traces has a width ranging from about 0.5 microns to about 10 microns.

8. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein each of the filamentation traces has a width ranging from about 1 micron to about 3 microns.

9. The electrochromic device of claim 1 , wherein adjacent filamentation traces of the plurality of filamentation traces are separated by an average distance ranging from 1 micron to 30 microns.

10. A piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass comprising:

a thermally-strengthened glass substrate having a first surface, an opposing second surface, and a peripheral edge between the first surface and the second surface, the peripheral edge having indicia of a laser filamentation cutting process comprising an edge surface having an average surface roughness of not more than 5 microns root mean square, wherein the indicia comprise filamentation traces, and wherein the peripheral edge of the strengthened glass has a probability of failure of less than about 5% under a 40 MPa load.

11. The electrochromic device of claim 10 , wherein the peripheral edge of the strengthened glass has a modulus of rupture of greater than 100 MPa and a Weibull modulus greater than 10.

12. The piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass of claim 10 , further comprising a coating on the peripheral edge of the strengthened glass comprising metal, oxide material, or a polymer layer.

13. The piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass of claim 10 , wherein each of the filamentation traces extends from the first surface toward the second surface to a depth of at least 75% of the thickness as detected by optical microscopy.

14. The piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass of claim 10 , wherein each of the filamentation traces extends from the first surface toward the second surface to a depth of at least 90% of the thickness as detected by optical microscopy.

15. The piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass of claim 10 , wherein each of the filamentation traces has a width ranging from about 0.5 microns to about 10 microns.

16. The piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass of claim 10 , wherein each of the filamentation traces has a width ranging from about 1 micron to about 3 microns.

17. The piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass of claim 10 , wherein adjacent filamentation traces of the plurality of filamentation traces are separated by an average distance ranging from about 1 micron to about 30 microns.

18. The piece of cut thermally-strengthened glass of claim 10 , wherein each of the filamentation traces comprises a filamentation length and a filamentation width and an aspect ratio of greater than about 10:1 as defined by the ratio of the filamentation length to the filamentation width.
