Abstract

Aspects of updating or upgrading a management system for a virtualized computing environment are described. In some aspects, a virtualization management system that manages a virtualized computing environment can be upgraded or updated with limited downtime of the system by deploying a new instance of the system and subsequently assigning a network address of the previous instance to the new instance once it is deployed in the environment.

Claims (55)

1. A system, comprising:

at least one computing device that comprises a processor and memory; and

program instructions stored in the memory, wherein the program instructions, when executed by the at least one computing device, cause the at least one computing device to:

identify a current instance of a virtualization management system associated with a virtualized computing environment, the current instance of the virtualization management system managing the virtualized computing environment, the virtualized computing environment comprising a plurality of host machines executing a plurality of virtual machines;

generate a snapshot of the current instance, the snapshot comprising a current state of the current instance;

generate a database backup of a database of the current instance;

execute a new instance of the virtualization management system, the new instance comprising a different version relative to the current instance;

assign a temporary network address to the new instance that is different from a network address of the current instance, wherein the new instance is network accessible to the at least one computing device by way of the temporary network address;

apply a plurality of configuration options to the new instance from the snapshot of the current instance;

assign a new database to the new instance, the new database generated from the database backup;

apply at least one change that occurred to the database since the database backup was generated to the new database; and

replace the temporary network address of the new instance with the network address of the current instance following application of the at least one change to the database.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the snapshot comprises a current inventory of the plurality of virtual machines running in the virtualized computing environment and information about database tables in the database.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein a database schema of the new database is different from a database schema of the database.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the snapshot is generated in a JavaScript Object Notation file.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the program instructions apply the at least one change that occurred to the database since the database backup was generated by:

generating a second database backup; and

identifying at least one difference between the database backup and the second database backup.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the second database backup is generated prior to assigning the new instance the network address of the current instance.

7. A method comprising:

identifying a current instance of a virtualization management system associated with a virtualized computing environment, the current instance of the virtualization management system managing the virtualized computing environment, the virtualized computing environment comprising a plurality of host machines executing a plurality of virtual machines;

generating a snapshot of the current instance, the snapshot comprising a current state of the current instance;

generating a database backup of a database of the current instance;

executing a new instance of the virtualization management system, the new instance comprising a different version relative to the current instance;

assigning a temporary network address to the new instance that is different from a network address of the current instance, wherein the new instance is network accessible to the at least one computing device by way of the temporary network address;

applying a plurality of configuration options to the new instance from the snapshot of the current instance;

assigning a new database to the new instance, the new database generated from the database backup;

applying at least one change that occurred to the database since the database backup was generated to the new database; and

replacing the temporary network address of the new instance with the network address of the current instance following application of the at least one change to the database.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the snapshot comprises a current inventory of the plurality of virtual machines running in the virtualized computing environment and information about database tables in the database.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein a database schema of the new database is different from a database schema of the database.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the snapshot is generated in a JavaScript Object Notation file.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein applying the at least one change that occurred to the database since the database backup was generated further comprises:

generating a second database backup; and

identifying at least one difference between the database backup and the second database backup.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the second database backup is generated prior to assigning the new instance the network address of the current instance.

13. A non-transitory computer readable storage medium embodying executable instructions which, when executed by a processor, cause a computing device to at least:

identify a current instance of a virtualization management system associated with a virtualized computing environment, the current instance of the virtualization management system managing the virtualized computing environment, the virtualized computing environment comprising a plurality of host machines executing a plurality of virtual machines;

generate a snapshot of the current instance, the snapshot comprising a current state of the current instance;

generate a database backup of a database of the current instance;

execute a new instance of the virtualization management system, the new instance comprising an updated version relative to the current instance;

assign a temporary network address to the new instance that is different from a network address of the current instance, wherein the new instance is network accessible to the at least one computing device by way of the temporary network address;

apply a plurality of configuration options to the new instance from the snapshot of the current instance;

assign a new database to the new instance, the new database generated from the database backup;

apply at least one change that occurred to the database since the database backup was generated to the new database; and

replace the temporary network address of the new instance with the network address of the current instance following application of the at least one change to the database.

14. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the snapshot comprises a current inventory of the plurality of virtual machines running in the virtualized computing environment and information about database tables in the database.

15. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein a database schema of the new database is different from a database schema of the database.

16. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the snapshot is generated in a JavaScript Object Notation file.

17. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the executable instructions apply the at least one change that occurred to the database since the database backup was generated by:

generating a second database backup; and

identifying at least one difference between the database backup and the second database backup.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the current instance of the virtualization management system is identified based on the network address included in a request for updating the current instance of the virtualization management system.

19. The method of claim 7 , wherein the current instance of the virtualization management system is identified based on the network address included in a request for updating the current instance of the virtualization management system.

20. The non-transitory computer readable storage medium of claim 13 , wherein the current instance of the virtualization management system is identified based on the network address included in a request for updating the current instance of the virtualization management system.
