Abstract

A system and method for in-service optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) testing in optical communication systems. At least one OSNR test signal is combined onto an optical path with data channels. A receiver detects the received power of the OSNR test signal and provides output data representative of the OSNR of the system.

1. A method comprising:

receiving, via at least one processor, an output signal representative of an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) test signal generated by an optical-to-electrical (O/E) converter;

receiving, via the at least one processor, an output signal representative of a power of the OSNR test signal generated by a lock-in amplifier, wherein the output signal representative of the power of the OSNR test signal is generated based on a coupling of the output signal representative of the of the OSNR test signal from the O/E converter to the lock-in amplifier;

comparing (i) an extent to which the power of the OSNR test signal exceeds a receiver baseline signal with (ii) an extent to which the power of the OSNR test signal exceeds a transmitted baseline signal; and

providing, via the at least one processor, OSNR measurement data output based at least in part on the comparing.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the OSNR test signal is received in combination with a plurality of data signals on an optical transmission path.

3. The method according to claim 1 , the method further comprising step-wise tuning a wavelength of the OSNR test signal to different parts of a system bandwidth.

4. The method according to claim 2 , wherein an optical power of the OSNR test signal is at least 20 dB lower than an optical power of the plurality of data signals.

5. The method according to claim 2 , wherein polarization modulation is applied to the OSNR test signal prior to the OSNR test signal being combined with the plurality of data signals on the optical transmission path.

6. The method according to claim 5 , wherein the polarization modulation to the OSNR test signal comprises modulating a polarization of the OSNR test signal such that a state of polarization (SOP) of the OSNR test signal rotates on a great circle of a Poincare sphere.

7. The method according to claim 6 , further comprising polarization scanning the OSNR test signal to randomly modify a plane of the Poincare sphere in which the SOP of the OSNR test signal resides.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising passing the OSNR test signal through a polarizer, wherein the polarizer is configured to convert the OSNR test signal to an amplitude modulated electrical test signal.

9. The method according to claim 8 , further comprising filtering the amplitude modulated electrical test signal via a lock-in amplifier.

10. The method according to claim 2 , wherein the plurality of data signals and the OSNR test signal are within a system bandwidth and the OSNR test signal is between wavelengths associated the plurality of data signals.

11. An apparatus comprising:

an optical-to-electrical (O/E) converter

a lock-in amplifier; and

at least one processor executing stored instructions to:

receive an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) test signal;

generate an electrical signal representative of the OSNR test signal via the O/E converter;

couple an output of the O/E converter to the lock-in amplifier;

compare (i) an extent to which a detected power of the lock-in amplifier

exceeds a receiver baseline signal with (ii) an extent to which a power of the OSNR test signal exceeds a transmitted baseline signal; and

provide OSNR measurement data output based at least in part on the comparison.

12. The apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the at least one processor further executes stored instructions to:

pass the OSNR test signal through a polarizer; and

couple an output of the polarizer to the O/E converter to generate the electrical signal representative of the OSNR test signal at an output of the O/E converter.

13. An apparatus comprising:

at least one optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) test signal transmitter, wherein the at least one OSNR test signal transmitter is configured to transmit an OSNR test signal;

a polarization modulator configured to apply polarization modulation to the OSNR test signal such that the state of polarization (SOP) of the OSNR test signal resides on a great circle of a Poincare sphere; and

a combiner configured to combine the OSNR test signal on an optical transmission path with one or more data signals.

14. The apparatus according to claim 13 , wherein the OSNR test signal is transmitted to an OSNR test signal receiver, the OSNR test signal receiver configured to detect power of the OSNR test signal.

15. The apparatus according to claim 14 , wherein the OSNR test signal receiver is configured to provide OSNR measurement data output in response to the detected power of the OSNR test signal.
