Abstract

This application discloses a geotextile-based structure for soil stabilization, erosion control, and vegetation-growth enhancement that is made from a cage having a hollow interior lined with a geotextile fabric designed to retain fine materials, which cage is attached to a geotextile mat capable of supporting vegetation.

Claims (34)

1. A geotextile-based structure for soil stabilization comprising at least one cage comprising (a) a geotextile fabric lining on an interior of at least a first generally planar section of the at least one cage and (b) a geotextile mat cover directly attached to the at least one cage and comprising at least four sides and capable of supporting live vegetation secured to an exterior surface, consisting of a second generally planar section of the at least one cage and three sides of the geotextile mat cover attached to said cage to form a pocket between the geotextile mat cover and the second generally planar section of the at least one cage.

2. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the geotextile mat cover capable of supporting vegetation comprises a three-dimensional mat comprising a thermoplastic filament yarn.

3. The geotextile-based structure of claim 2 wherein the geotextile mat cover comprises a thermoplastic filament yarn polymer comprising polyester, polyethylene, polypropylene, polyphenylene oxide, fluoropolymers, nylon, acrylic, polyurethane, polyamide, copolymers thereof, or mixtures thereof.

4. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the geotextile mat cover capable of supporting live vegetation comprises a three-dimensional, cuspated profile, woven mat comprising a trilobal thermoplastic filament yarn.

5. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 further comprising a vegetative-sustaining material.

6. The geotextile-based structure of claim 5 wherein the vegetative-sustaining material comprises soil, mulch, hydroseeding, sand, or mixtures thereof.

7. The geotextile-based structure of claim 5 wherein the vegetative-sustaining material lies within the pocket formed between the geotextile mat cover capable of supporting live vegetation and the at least a second section of the at least one cage.

8. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the at least one cage comprises a mesh, a frame, a perforated sheet, a grid, or mixtures thereof.

9. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the at least one cage comprises a metal, plastic, fiberglass, stone, clay, cement, or mixtures thereof.

10. The geotextile-based structure of claim 9 wherein the metal comprises stainless steel, galvanized steel, powder-coated steel, polymeric-coated steel, polyvinylchloride-coated steel, or mixtures thereof.

11. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the geotextile mat cover capable of supporting live vegetation covers at least one outer surface of the at least one cage.

12. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the at least one cage is weighted for stability.

13. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the at least one cage comprises a metallic cage having an open top side and a closed bottom side attached to four upright sides.

14. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the at least one cage is collapsible.

15. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the geotextile mat cover comprises a thickness in a range of about 0.25 inches (250 mils) to about 0.5 inches (500 mils).

16. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the geotextile mat cover comprises a tensile strength of at least about 2000 pounds/foot in a warp direction and at least about 1800 pounds/foot in a filling direction.

17. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the thermoplastic filament yarn has a denier ranging from about 1200 to about 2000.

18. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 further comprising an anchoring means to attach the at least one cage to the ground.

19. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 further comprising a top side for the at least one cage.

20. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the at least one cage comprises a free form structure.

21. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 comprising multiple cages that have the same size and shape or that have different sizes and shapes.

22. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 comprising multiple cages.

23. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 comprising multiple cages which are arranged in series or at random or stacked.

24. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 wherein the at least one cage is filled with one or more materials.

25. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 further comprising seeds, hydroseeding, or live plants.

26. The geotextile-based structure of claim 1 , wherein

the second section of the at least one cage is rectangular with first, second, third and fourth sides,

the geotextile mat cover is rectangular with first, second, third and fourth sides corresponding to the first, second, third and fourth sides of the second section of the at least one cage and being longer than the second generally planar section, and

the geotextile mat cover is connected to the second generally planar section of the at least one cage along at least three of the corresponding first, second, third and fourth sides to form the pocket.

27. A structure comprising multiple cages comprising (a) a geotextile fabric on at least a first planar section of at least one of the multiple cages and (b) a geotextile mat cover having at least three sides and directly attached and secured on the at least three sides of the geotextile mat cover to a second planar section of the at least one of the multiple cages to form a pocket between and consisting of the geotextile mat cover and the second planar section of the at least one of the multiple cages.

28. The geotextile-based structure of claim 27 , wherein

the second section of the at least one cage is rectangular with first, second, third and fourth sides,

the geotextile mat cover is rectangular with first, second, third and fourth sides corresponding to the first, second, third and fourth sides of the second planar section of the at least one cage and being slightly longer than the second planar section, and

the geotextile mat cover is connected to the second planar section of the at least one cage along at least three of the corresponding first, second, third and fourth sides to form the pocket.
