Abstract

Method starts with processor receiving media content item and selection of personalized media overlay. Personalized media overlay includes image with space for text. Processor generates modified media content item by overlaying personalized media overlay on media content item. Modified media content item includes the image with the space for text overlaid on the media content item. Processor receives a selection of recipients including second user and third user. Processor generates recipient-personalized media content items including recipient-personalized media content item for second user by adding second user's name to the space for text in the image and recipient-personalized media content item for third user by adding the third user's name to the space for text in the image. Processor causes recipient-personalized media content item for second user to be displayed by second client device and recipient-personalized media content item for third user to be displayed by third client device.

Claims (71)

1. A method comprising:

initiating a messaging system configured to enable a first user to communicate messages with other users, the other users including a second user and a third user;

receiving a media content item captured using a camera of a first client device, the first client device being associated with the first user;

displaying the other users to the first user;

receiving, from the first user, a selection of the second user and the third user; and

in response to receiving the selection of the first user and the second user, automatically:

retrieving a three dimensional avatar associated with the second user;

adding the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the media content item by overlaying the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the media content item to generate a first modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user overlaid on top of the media content item that was captured using the camera of the first client device, wherein overlaying the three dimensional avatar to the media content item comprises placing the three dimensional avatar on top of a portion of the media content item;

retrieving a three dimensional avatar associated with the third user;

adding the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the media content item by overlaying the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the media content item to generate a second modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user overlaid on top of the media content item that was captured using the camera of the first client device;

causing display of an annotation interface to the first client device, the annotation interface enabling the first user to make modifications to the first and second modified media content items before transmission to the corresponding users;

receiving a user selection from the first user of a modification, the modification includes text that is selected or typed by the user;

adding the text to be adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user in the first modified media content item;

adding the text to be adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user in the second modified media content item;

transmitting the first modified media content item with the text adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the second user; and

transmitting the second modified media content item with the text adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the third user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the automatically retrieving a three dimensional avatar and adding the three dimensional avatar is performed without a user selection of a particular three dimensional avatar.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user is a three dimensional avatar that includes physiological characteristics resembling the second user, the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user is a three dimensional avatar that includes physiological characteristics resembling the third user.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the three dimensional avatar includes an animation of the avatar performing one or more actions.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user includes an animation of a digital representation of the second user performing one or more actions.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content item is a static image, wherein the three dimensional avatar is overlaid over the static image resulting in the first modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar overlaid on top of the static image that was captured using the camera of the first device.

The method of claim 1 , wherein the media content item is a video, wherein the three dimensional avatar is overlaid over a plurality of frames of the video resulting in the first modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar overlaid on top of at least a portion of the video that was captured using the camera of the first device.

8. The method of claim 1 ,

wherein the transmission of the first or second modified media content item comprises transmitting of the first or second modified media content item that was modified by the first user.

The method of claim 8 , wherein receiving the user selection includes receiving a first user selection of a first modification to the first modified media content item and receiving a second user selection of a second modification to the second modified media content item, wherein the first modification is different than the second modification.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein receiving the user selection includes applying the modification to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user and applying the modification to the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user in response to a single user selection of the modification.

11. The method of claim 2 , wherein the text is selected or typed by the user.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, automatically in response to receiving the selection of the first user and the second user:

retrieving a name associated with the second user from a database;

adding the name associated with the second user to the first modified media content item;

retrieving a name associated with the third user from the database; and

adding the name associated with the third user to the second modified media content item.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein adding the name to the first modified media content item comprises adding the name to be adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user.

14. The method of claim 1 , further comprising automatically adding a three dimensional avatar associated with the first user to the first and second modified content items in response to receiving the selection of the first user and the second user.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the three dimensional avatar associated with the first user is a three dimensional avatar that includes physiological characteristics resembling the first user.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first modified media content item is displayed to the second client device for a first predetermined amount of time and the second modified media content item is temporarily displayed to the third client device for a second predetermined amount of time, wherein the first predetermined amount of time is different than the second predetermined amount of time;

in response to a lapse of the first predetermined amount of time, disable display of the first modified media content item on the second client device; and

in response to a lapse of the second predetermined amount of time, disable display of the second modified media content item on the third client device.

17. A system comprising:

a messaging server system including an application server to perform one or more operations comprising:

initiating a messaging system configured to enable a first user to communicate messages with other users, the other users including a second user and a third user;

receiving a media content item captured using a camera of a first client device, the first client device being associated with the first user;

displaying the other users to the first user;

receiving, from the first user, a selection of the second user and the third user; and

in response to receiving the selection of the first user and the second user, automatically:

retrieving a three dimensional avatar associated with the second user;

adding the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the media content item by overlaying the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the media content item to generate a first modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user overlaid on top of the media content item that was captured using the camera of the first client device, wherein overlaying the three dimensional avatar to the media content item comprises placing the three dimensional avatar on top of a portion of the media content item;

retrieving a three dimensional avatar associated with the third user;

adding the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the media content item by overlaying the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the media content item to generate a second modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user overlaid on top of the media content item that was captured using the camera of the first client device;

causing display of an annotation interface to the first client device, the annotation interface enabling the first user to make modifications to the first and second modified media content items before transmission to the corresponding users;

receiving a user selection from the first user of a modification, the modification includes text that is selected or typed by the user;

adding the text to be adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user in the first modified media content item;

adding the text to be adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user in the second modified media content item;

transmitting the first modified media content item with the text adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the second user; and

transmitting the second modified media content item with the text adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the third user.

18. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon, instructions when executed by a processor, causes the processor to perform operations comprising:

initiating a messaging system configured to enable a first user to communicate messages with other users, the other users including a second user and a third user;

receiving a media content item captured using a camera of a first client device, the first client device being associated with the first user;

displaying the other users to the first user;

receiving, from the first user, a selection of the second user and the third user; and

in response to receiving the selection of the first user and the second user, automatically:

retrieving a three dimensional avatar associated with the second user;

adding the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the media content item by overlaying the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the media content item to generate a first modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user overlaid on top of the media content item that was captured using the camera of the first client device, wherein overlaying the three dimensional avatar to the media content item comprises placing the three dimensional avatar on top of a portion of the media content item;

retrieving a three dimensional avatar associated with the third user;

adding the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the media content item by overlaying the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the media content item to generate a second modified media content item that is configured to be displayed showing the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user overlaid on top of the media content item that was captured using the camera of the first client device;

causing display of an annotation interface to the first client device, the annotation interface enabling the first user to make modifications to the first and second modified media content items before transmission to the corresponding users;

receiving a user selection from the first user of a modification, the modification includes text that is selected or typed by the user;

adding the text to be adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user in the first modified media content item;

adding the text to be adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user in the second modified media content item;

transmitting the first modified media content item with the text adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the second user to the second user; and

transmitting the second modified media content item with the text adjacent to the three dimensional avatar associated with the third user to the third user.
