Abstract

A system, computer program product, and method for displaying a warning graphic for traffic congestion is provided. The method begins with determining a mobile device approaching a zone comprising traffic congestion. Next a first warning graphic of the traffic congestion is displayed to the at least one mobile device approaching that zone, the warning graphic displayed on the one mobile device. A location of the mobile device is tracked overtime approaching that zone. The mobile device approaching is updated that zone regarding a progress of the traffic congestion indicated in the first warning graphic by displaying at least one follow-up warning graphic on the at least one mobile device, provided prior to the traffic congestion being cleared.

Claims (46)

1. A method for providing traffic notifications, the method comprising:

identifying at least a first electronic device that is geographically located within a first given distance of and travelling towards a traffic congestion zone;

identifying at least a second electronic device that is geographically located within a second given distance of and travelling towards the traffic congestion zone, wherein the first given distance is further from the traffic congestion zone than the second given distance;

sending a first notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a first electronic device;

sending a second notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a second electronic device,

wherein the first notification is a concise warning of the congestion and comprises a link to enable a user to request further details; and

wherein the second notification comprises a suggested alternative route.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining if a number of electronic devices in the first given distance is greater than settable threshold and based on the number of electronic devices being above the settable threshold, sending the first notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a first electronic device.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

tracking over time, a geographic location of the first electronic device approaching the traffic congestion zone; and;

updating the first electronic device regarding the progress of the traffic congestion zone indicated in the first notification by sending at least one follow up notification provided prior to the traffic congestion zone being cleared.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first notification and the at least one follow up notification provide a pop-up window.

5. The method of claim 3 , wherein at least one of the first notification and the at least one follow up notification is provided to a second system comprising a display to have the second system display the at least one of the first notification and the at least one follow up notification.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the second system comprises an in-vehicle navigation system.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first notification comprises a tip for bypassing that zone.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first notification provides data to enable a map to be displayed, the map including at least a portion of that zone.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprises updating the second electronic device approaching that zone once the traffic congestion zone has cleared.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving a request for the first notification from the first electronic device.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising sending a request for the first notification to a notification system.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the request is generated after detecting selection of a menu option.

13. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving selection of the link and providing a suggested alternative route.

14. A notification system comprising a processor, a communication interface, and memory, the memory comprising computer executable instructions for operating the processor to:

identify at least a first electronic device is geographically located within a first given distance of and travelling towards a traffic congestion zone;

identify at least a second electronic device is geographically located within a second given distance of and travelling towards the traffic congestion zone, wherein the first given distance is further from the traffic congestion zone than the second given distance;

send a first notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a first electronic device;

send a second notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a second electronic device,

wherein the first notification is a concise warning of the congestion and comprises a link to enable a user to request further details; and

wherein the second notification comprises a suggested alternative route.

15. The notification system of claim 14 , further comprising:

determine if a number of electronic devices in the first given distance is greater than settable threshold and based on the number of electronic devices being above the settable threshold, send the first notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a first electronic device.

16. The notification system of claim 14 , further comprising:

track over time, a geographic location of the first electronic device approaching the traffic congestion zone; and;

update the first electronic device regarding the progress of the traffic congestion zone indicated in the first notification by sending at least one follow up notification provided prior to the traffic congestion zone being cleared.

17. The notification system of claim 14 , further comprising receiving selection of the link and providing a suggested alternative route.

18. A tangible computer storage element comprising computer executable instructions displaying a warning graphic for traffic congestion, the computer storage element comprising instructions for:

identifying at least a first electronic device is geographically located within a first given distance of and travelling towards a traffic congestion zone;

identifying at least a second electronic device is geographically located within a second given distance of and travelling towards the traffic congestion zone, wherein the first given distance is further from the traffic congestion zone than the second given distance;

sending a first notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a first electronic device;

sending a second notification of the traffic congestion zone to the at least a second electronic device,

wherein the first notification is a concise warning of the congestion and comprises a link to enable a user to request further details; and

wherein the second notification comprises a suggested alternative route.

19. The computer storage element of claim 18 , further comprising:

tracking over time, a geographic location of the first electronic device approaching the traffic congestion zone; and;

updating the first electronic device regarding the progress of the traffic congestion zone indicated in the first notification by sending at least one follow up notification provided prior to the traffic congestion zone being cleared.

20. The computer storage element of claim 18 , further comprising receiving selection of the link and providing a suggested alternative route.
