Abstract

Solutions are proposed to handle PRACH resource and beam selection under the following scenarios. First, a CFRA procedure is initiated, but all beams associated with the CFRA resource is below a RSRP threshold and CBRA fallback is not supported. UE continues to perform CFRA by selecting any downlink beam associated with dedicated PRACH resource, and then select dedicated PRACH resource associated with the selected downlink beam; second, a CFRA procedure is initiated but the active UL BWP is not paired with the active DL BWP. Upon CFRA initiation, UE uses current active UL and DL BWP to perform CFRA, and switches to another BWP pair upon all beams associated with the CFRA resource are below a RSRP threshold; third, a CBRA procedure is initiated but the active UL BWP is not configured with PRACH resource. UE selects a special UL/DL BWP to perform the CBRA procedure.

Claims (20)

1. A method comprising:

receiving control information transmitted from a base station by a user equipment (UE) in a beamforming wireless communications network;

initiating a random-access procedure, wherein dedicated physical random-access channel (PRACH) resources and a set of downlink beams are configured by the network based on the control information;

determining that a signal quality of each of the set of downlink beams associated with the dedicated PRACH resources is below a predefined threshold; and

in response to determining that the UE does not support a contention-based RACH (CBRA) procedure based on a bandwidth part (BWP) configuration, performing a contention-free random access (CFRA) procedure by selecting a downlink beam from the set of downlink beams and the dedicated PRACH resources configured by the network, wherein the UE continues the CFRA procedure on an active uplink BWP that has no contention-based PRACH resource configured.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the CFRA procedure is initiated by the network, and wherein the CFRA procedure does not support CBRA fallback.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the CFRA procedure is initiated by the UE for obtaining system information from the network.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the UE is configured with multiple bandwidth parts (BWPs) in a carrier bandwidth, and wherein the UE operates on the active uplink BWP and an active downlink BWP pair.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the UE performs the CFRA procedure on the active uplink BWP and the active downlink BWP.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the UE does not switch to another BWP pair to perform a contention-based random-access (CBRA) procedure.

7. A User Equipment (UE) comprising:

a receiver that receives control information transmitted from a base station in a beamforming wireless communications network;

a physical random-access channel (PRACH) handling circuit that initiates the random-access procedure, wherein dedicated physical random-access channel (PRACH) resources and a set of downlink beams are configured by the network based on the control information;

a decoder that determines that a signal quality of each of the set of downlink beams associated with the dedicated PRACH resources is below a predefined threshold; and

in response to determining that the UE does not support a contention-based RACH (CBRA) procedure based on a bandwidth part (BWP) configuration, the PRACH handling circuit performs a contention-free random access (CFRA) procedure by selecting a downlink beam from the set of downlink beams and the dedicated PRACH resources configured by the network, wherein the UE continues the CFRA procedure on an active uplink BWP that has no contention-based PRACH resource configured.

8. The UE of claim 7 , wherein the CFRA procedure is initiated by the network, and wherein the CFRA procedure does not support CBRA fallback.

9. The UE of claim 7 , wherein the CFRA procedure is initiated by the UE for obtaining system information from the network.

10. The UE of claim 7 , wherein the UE is configured with multiple bandwidth parts (BWPs) in a carrier bandwidth, and wherein the UE operates on the active uplink BWP and an active downlink BWP pair.

11. The UE of claim 10 , wherein the UE performs the CFRA procedure on the active uplink BWP and the active downlink BWP.

12. The UE of claim 11 , wherein the UE does not switch to another BWP pair to perform a contention-based random-access (CBRA) procedure.
