Abstract

An illustrative damper system includes a damper blade that is configured to be positioned within a duct, such as a bypass duct of an HVAC system. A shaft is in communication with the damper blade, a torsion spring is in communication with the shaft, and a force adjustment mechanism is in communication with the torsion spring. The shaft, the damper blade, and the torsion spring may be configured such that the shaft may affect movement of the damper blade about a rotation axis and the torsion spring may provide a bias force to the shaft for biasing the damper blade toward a desired position (e.g. closed position).

Claims (32)

1. A damper system for use in conjunction with a duct, the damper system comprising:

a damper configured to be positioned within the duct to control a volume flow rate through the duct across an operating volume flow rate range of the duct;

a damper actuator in communication with the damper for providing a bias to the damper towards a closed position; and

wherein the bias provided by the damper actuator is configured to produce a flat curve of a pressure differential across the damper over a sub-range having a width of 600 cfm or more of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct.

2. The damper system of claim 1 , wherein the flat curve of the pressure differential across the damper is considered to be flat when a change in pressure differential across the damper does not exceed 0.1 inches of water over the sub-range of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct.

3. The damper system of claim 1 , wherein the flat curve of the pressure differential across the damper is considered to be flat when a change in pressure differential across the damper does not exceed 0.4 inches of water over a sub-range extending from 200 cfm to 1800 cfm of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct.

4. The damper system of claim 1 , wherein the flat curve of the pressure differential across the damper is considered to be flat when a change in pressure differential across the damper does not exceed 0.2 inches of water over a sub-range extending from 200 cfm to 1800 cfm of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct.

5. The damper system of claim 1 , wherein the flat curve of the pressure differential across the damper is considered to be flat when a change in pressure differential across the damper does not exceed 0.1 inches of water over a sub-range extending from 200 cfm to 1800 cfm of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct.

6. The damper system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a shaft in communication with the damper to provide an axis of rotation of the damper offset from a diametrical axis of the damper;

wherein the damper actuator comprises a spring in communication with the shaft; and

wherein the damper supports a weight configured to set the center of gravity of the damper at the axis of rotation of the damper.

7. The damper system of claim 1 , wherein the bias of the damper actuator is provided by a spring.

8. The damper system of claim 7 , wherein the spring comprises a coil spring.

9. The damper system of claim 7 , wherein the spring has a stiffness of less than or equal to 0.11 Newton-millimeters/degree.

10. The damper system of claim 7 , wherein the spring has a stiffness of less than or equal to about 0.16 Newton-millimeters/degree.

11. The damper system of claim 7 , wherein the spring has a stiffness of less than or equal to about 0.29 Newton-millimeters/degree.

12. The damper system of claim 7 , wherein the spring has a stiffness of less than or equal to about 0.50 Newton-millimeters/degree.

13. The damper system of claim 1 , wherein the damper actuator comprises a bias adjuster for manually adjusting the bias provided by the damper actuator.

14. The damper system of claim 1 , wherein a measure related to a magnitude of the bias provided by the damper actuator is made visible from outside of a housing of the damper actuator.

15. A damper system for use in conjunction with a duct, the damper system comprising:

a damper configured to be positioned within the duct to control a volume flow rate through the duct across an operating volume flow rate range of the duct;

a spring in communication with the damper for providing a bias to the damper towards a closed position; and

wherein the bias provided by the spring is configured to produce a flat curve of a pressure differential across the damper over a sub-range having a width of 600 cfm or more of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct.

16. The damper system of claim 15 , further comprising a housing that houses at least part of the spring, and wherein a measure related to a magnitude of the bias provided by the spring is visible from outside of the housing.

17. The damper system of claim 15 , wherein the spring comprises a coil spring.

18. A damper system for use in conjunction with a duct, the damper system comprising:

a damper blade configured to be positioned within the duct to control a volume flow rate through the duct across an operating volume flow rate range of the duct;

a shaft in communication with the damper blade to affect movement of the damper blade about a rotation axis between a first position and a second position;

a spring in communication with the shaft, the spring providing a bias to the shaft to bias the damper blade toward the first position, wherein the bias is manually adjustable without also having to adjust a rotational position of the shaft, wherein the bias provided by the spring is configured to produce a flat curve of a pressure differential across the damper blade over a sub-range having a width of 600 cfm or more of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct; and

wherein a measure related to a magnitude of the bias provided by the spring to the shaft is made visible from outside of a housing that at least partially encloses the spring.

19. The damper system of claim 18 , wherein the flat curve of the pressure differential across the damper blade is considered to be flat when a change in pressure differential across the damper blade does not exceed 0.4 inches of water over a sub-range extending from 200 cfm to 1800 cfm of the operating volume flow rate range of the duct.
