Abstract

A satellite broadcast system is used to transmit streams of variable bit-rate content using fixed bit-rate channels that correspond to respective satellite transponder carriers. High bandwidth content is transmitted over multiple transponder carriers in parallel with a combined bandwidth sufficient for the peak bit-rate of the high bandwidth content, whereas multiple streams of low bandwidth content can be transmitted over a single transponder carrier simultaneously by multiplexing the low bandwidth content. High bandwidth content may be multiplexed with low bandwidth content rather than assigning all high bandwidth content to be transmitted exclusively over dedicated high bandwidth transponders.

The device of claim 1 , wherein the transmitting of the second combined data stream to the media processor via the second channel is further via a first communication protocol, wherein the transmitting of the messaging to the media processor is further via a second communication protocol, and wherein the first communication protocol is distinct from the second communication protocol.

11. The device of claim 1 , wherein the non-satellite-based communication path utilizes an Internet communication protocol.

12. A non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising executable instructions that, when executed by a processing system including a processor, perform operations, the operations comprising:

assigning a first low bandwidth data stream and a first portion of a high bandwidth data stream to a first channel to generate a first combined data stream comprising a first group of data packets;

assigning a second low bandwidth data stream and a second portion of the high bandwidth data stream to a second channel to generate a second combined data stream comprising a second group of data packets;

transmitting the first combined data stream to a media processor via the first channel, wherein the transmitting of the first combined data stream is via a satellite-based communication path, wherein the media processor extracts the first portion of the high bandwidth data stream from the first group of data packets according to a first packet identifier associated with the high bandwidth data stream, and wherein messaging indicating the first packet identifier is transmitted to the media processor via a non-satellite-based communication path; and

transmitting the second combined data stream to the media processor via the second channel, wherein the transmitting of the second combined data stream is via the satellite-based communication path, and wherein the media processor extracts the second portion of the high bandwidth data stream from the second group of data packets according to the first packet identifier associated with the high bandwidth data stream.

13. The non-transitory machine-readable storage medium of claim 12 , wherein the media processor extracts the first low bandwidth data stream from the first group of data packets according to a second packet identifier associated with the first low bandwidth data stream.
