Method and systems for microfluidic logic devices
A microfluidic system includes a substrate, a set of input ports coupled to the substrate, and a set of output ports coupled to the substrate. The microfluidic system also includes a microfluidic processing system coupled to the substrate and including a plurality of processing sites. The microfluidic processing system is coupled to the set of input ports and the set of output ports. The microfluidic system further includes one or more microfluidic logic devices coupled to the substrate and operable to control at least a portion of the microfluidic processing system.
1. A microfluidic device comprising a static gain valve (MGV), wherein the MGV comprises:
a substrate layer;
a control layer coupled to the substrate layer, wherein the control layer includes a control channel characterized by a control pressure and a control membrane; and
a flow layer coupled to the control layer, wherein the flow layer includes a flow channel characterized by a flow channel pressure and a flow layer membrane deflected across the flow channel to contact the control membrane with a static pressure in a closed state, wherein the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to an open state is a function of the static pressure and the control pressure.
2. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the microfluidic device comprises more independently actuated sets of valves than external control lines.
3. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the flow layer membrane comprises an elastomeric membrane operable to modulate the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to the open state.
4. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the MGV comprises a normally closed valve and the control membrane comprises a flexible membrane that is operable to modulate the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to the open state.
5. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein an increase in the control pressure results in an increase in the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to the open state.
6. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the static pressure is provided by the contact between the flow layer membrane and the control membrane.
7. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the static pressure is greater than 5 psi.
8. The microfluidic device of claim 7 , wherein the static pressure is greater than 10 psi.
9. The microfluidic device of claim 8 , wherein the static pressure is greater than 15 psi.
10. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to the open state is equal to the control pressure plus the static pressure.
11. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the MGV is closed when the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to the open state and the control pressure are equal.
12. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the microfluidic device comprises a NOT gate, wherein the NOT gate comprises the MGV.
13. The microfluidic device of claim 12 , wherein the NOT gate is tied to atmospheric pressure.
14. The microfluidic device of claim 12 , wherein the microfluidic device comprises a flip flop, wherein the flip flop comprises the NOT gate.
15. The microfluidic device of claim 14 , wherein the flip flop is clocked.
16. The microfluidic device of claim 14 , wherein the microfluidic device comprises a shift register, wherein the shift register comprises the flip flop.
17. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the MGV comprises a normally closed valve (NCV) with a fill layer that provides static gain.
18. A system comprising the microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the system is configured to provide the control pressure and the flow opening pressure to the microfluidic device.
19. A method of using the microfluidic device of claim 1 , comprising simultaneously providing the control pressure and the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to the open state to the microfluidic device.
20. The microfluidic device of claim 1 , wherein the MGV is characterized by a static gain equal to a ratio of the flow channel pressure at which the MGV transitions to the open state to the control pressure.
