Abstract

Embodiments discussed herein refer to LiDAR systems that use avalanche photo diodes for detecting returns of laser pulses. The bias voltage applied to the avalanche photo diode is adjusted to ensure that it operates at desired operating capacity.

Claims (59)

1. A light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system, comprising:

a scanning system comprising:

an avalanche photo diode (APD) having first and second terminals, the APD having an avalanche voltage threshold, wherein the avalanche voltage threshold is temperature dependent and determined based on a product of an APD physical breakdown voltage and a fit constant;

a variable voltage source coupled to the first terminal, the variable voltage source operative to apply a bias voltage to the first terminal;

an amplifier coupled to the second terminal; and

a controller coupled to the variable voltage source and operative to adjust a magnitude of the bias voltage applied to the first terminal such that the applied bias voltage does not exceed the avalanche voltage threshold.

2. The LiDAR system of claim 1 , wherein the scanning system further comprises a temperature sensor that monitors a temperature associated with the APD, and wherein the controller is operative to:

receive a temperature from the temperature sensor; and

adjust the applied bias voltage based on the received temperature.

3. The LiDAR system of claim 2 , wherein the controller is operative to:

access a look-up table to determine the applied bias voltage based on the received temperature.

4. The LiDAR system of claim 2 , wherein the temperature sensor is coupled to the controller.

5. The LiDAR system of claim 2 , wherein the controller is operative to adjust the applied bias voltage to modify a dynamic range of signal amplitude generated by a laser return pulse.

6. The LiDAR system of claim 1 , wherein an output of the amplifier is coupled to the controller.

7. The LiDAR system of claim 6 , wherein the controller is operative to:

conduct a bias voltage calibration sweep that sweeps the applied bias voltage across a range of applied bias voltages;

monitor the output during the bias voltage calibration sweep;

determine the avalanche voltage threshold based on the monitored output; and

set the applied bias voltage to a calibrated applied bias voltage based on the determined avalanche voltage threshold, wherein the calibrated applied bias voltage is less than the determined avalanche voltage threshold.

8. The LiDAR system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is operative to conduct the bias voltage calibration sweep in response to a periodic time interval or an initialization of the LiDAR system.

9. The LiDAR system of claim 7 , wherein the controller is operative to conduct the bias voltage calibration sweep in response to a trigger event.

10. The LiDAR system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a laser source that transmits a light pulse within a light pulse period; and

wherein the controller is operative to sweep through a pre-defined range of applied bias voltages.

11. The LiDAR system of claim 10 , wherein the applied bias voltages within the pre-defined range of applied bias voltages are less than the avalanche voltage threshold.

12. The LiDAR system of claim 10 , wherein the applied bias voltages within the pre-defined range of applied bias voltages increase with respect to time within a light pulse period.

13. The LiDAR system of claim 12 , wherein the applied bias voltages are relatively lower for objects detected at relatively close distances and wherein the applied bias voltages are relatively higher for objects detected at relatively far distances.

14. A method for using a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system, the LiDAR system comprising an avalanche photo diode (APD), a temperature sensor, and a variable voltage source, the method comprising:

determining a physical breakdown voltage of the APD;

generating an anticipated avalanche voltage threshold based, at least in part, on a product of the determined physical breakdown voltage and a fit constant;

determining an initial bias voltage based on the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold and a voltage offset; and

determining an active scanning event bias voltage based on the initial bias voltage and a temperature received by the temperature sensor, wherein the active scanning event bias voltage is applied to the APD by the variable voltage source to prevent such that the APD does not operate at or above the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold.

15. The method of claim 14 , wherein the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold represents an inflection point within the APD, the inflection point being associated with expected noise generated by the APD.

16. The method of claim 14 , wherein the voltage offset sets the initial bias voltage to a voltage level that is lower than the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold.

17. The method of claim 14 , wherein the active scanning event bias voltage is a temperature based alteration to the initial bias voltage.

18. The method of claim 14 , wherein determining the physical breakdown voltage comprises:

obtaining a relation of signal intensity versus voltage to determine a voltage level where a signal gain approaches infinity; and

selecting the voltage level as the physical breakdown voltage.

19. The method of claim 14 , wherein determining the physical breakdown voltage comprises:

performing a voltage sweep of the APD to determine a voltage level where the APD experiences a breakdown event; and

selecting the voltage level as the physical breakdown voltage.

20. A light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system, comprising:

an avalanche photo diode (APD);

a temperature sensor;

a variable voltage source; and

a controller operative to:

determine a physical breakdown voltage of the APD;

generate an anticipated avalanche voltage threshold based, at least in part, on a product of the determined physical breakdown voltage and a fit constant;

determine an initial bias voltage based on the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold and a voltage offset; and

determine an active scanning event bias voltage based on the initial bias voltage and a temperature received by the temperature sensor, wherein the active scanning event bias voltage is applied to the APD by the variable voltage source to prevent the APD from operating at or above the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold.

21. The system of claim 20 , wherein the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold represents an inflection point within the APD, the inflection point being associated with noise generated by the APD.

22. The system of claim 20 , wherein the voltage offset sets the initial bias voltage to a voltage level that is lower than the anticipated avalanche voltage threshold.

23. The system of claim 20 , wherein the active scanning event bias voltage is a temperature based alteration to the initial bias voltage.

24. The system of claim 20 , wherein the controller is operative to:

obtaining a relation of signal intensity versus voltage to determine a voltage level where a signal gain approaches infinity; and

select the voltage level as the breakdown voltage.

25. The system of claim 20 , wherein the controller is operative to:

perform a voltage sweep of the APD to determine a voltage level where the APD experiences a breakdown event; and

select the voltage level as the physical breakdown voltage.
