Abstract

Embodiments of the invention include a method of charging a rechargeable battery, the method comprising the steps of: detecting the presence of a rechargeable hearing aid in a hearing aid recharger; generating a unique random ID in the charger; transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid using an extremely low power protocol; demodulating the unique ID in the hearing aid; using the demodulated unique ID in a low power protocol to advertise the hearing aid on a network which includes the charger; associating the hearing aid to the charger when the charger which broadcast the unique ID receives that unique ID from a hearing aid using a wireless protocol; using the wireless protocol to communicate between the associated charging station and hearing aid; radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid; and ending the association when the hearing aid is removed from the charger.

Claims (58)

1. A method of charging a rechargeable battery in a hearing aid, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting the presence of a rechargeable hearing aid in a hearing aid charger;

generating a unique random ID in the charger;

transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid using an extremely low power protocol, wherein the charger waits a predetermined time after detecting the hearing aid in the charger before transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid;

demodulating the unique random ID in the hearing aid;

using the demodulated unique random ID in a low power protocol to advertise the hearing aid on a network which includes the charger;

associating the hearing aid to the charger when the charger which broadcast the unique random ID receives that unique random ID from the hearing aid using a wireless protocol;

using the wireless protocol to communicate between the associated charging station and the hearing aid;

radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid, wherein the charger charges the hearing aid by oscillating a pulse wave modulation signal at a predetermined frequency, wherein the pulse wave modulation signal is for at least a portion of the charging time toggled on for a first period of time and off for a second period of time, the second period of time being longer than the first period of time, wherein the first period of time is approximately 10 milliseconds;

establishing the state of charge of the associated hearing aid prior to radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid; and

ending the association when the hearing aid is removed from the charger.

2. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 1 wherein the predetermined frequency is approximately 744 kHz.

3. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 1 wherein the second period of time is approximately 190 milliseconds.

4. A method of charging a rechargeable battery in a hearing aid, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting the presence of a rechargeable hearing aid in a hearing aid charger;

generating a unique random ID in the charger;

demodulating the unique random ID in the hearing aid;

transmitting the unique random ID back from the hearing aid to the charger, wherein the charger waits a predetermined time after detecting the hearing aid in the charger before transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid;

radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid, wherein the charger charges the hearing aid by oscillating a pulse wave modulation signal at a predetermined frequency, wherein the pulse wave modulation signal is toggled on for a first period of time and off for a second period of time, the second period of time being longer than the first period of time, wherein the first period of time is approximately 10 milliseconds;

establishing the state of charge of the associated hearing aid prior to radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid; and

ending the association when the hearing aid is removed from the charger.

5. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 4 wherein the predetermined frequency is approximately 744 kHz.

6. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 4 wherein the second period of time is approximately 190 milliseconds.

7. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 4 , further comprising the step of transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid using an extremely low power protocol.

8. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 7 , further comprising the step of using the demodulated unique random ID in a low power protocol to advertise itself on a network which includes the charger.

9. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 8 , further comprising the step of associating the hearing aid with the charger when the charger which broadcast the unique random ID receives that unique random ID from the hearing aid.

10. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 9 , wherein the charger and the hearing aid are associated using a Bluetooth protocol.

11. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 10 , wherein the wireless protocol is used to communicate between the associated charging station and the hearing aid.

12. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 4 , wherein the wireless protocol is a bluetooth protocol.

13. A method of charging a rechargeable battery in a hearing aid, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting the presence of a rechargeable hearing aid in a hearing aid charger;

generating a unique random ID in the charger;

transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid using an extremely low power protocol, wherein the charger waits a predetermined time after detecting the hearing aid in the charger before transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid;

demodulating the unique random ID in the hearing aid;

using the demodulated unique random ID in a low power protocol to advertise the hearing aid on a network which includes the charger;

associating the hearing aid to the charger when the charger which broadcast the unique random ID receives that unique random ID from the hearing aid using a wireless protocol;

using the wireless protocol to communicate between the associated charging station and the hearing aid;

radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid, wherein the charger charges the hearing aid by oscillating a pulse wave modulation signal at a predetermined frequency, wherein the pulse wave modulation signal is for at least a portion of the charging time toggled on for a first period of time and off for a second period of time, the second period of time being longer than the first period of time, wherein the second period of time is approximately 190 milliseconds;

establishing the state of charge of the associated hearing aid prior to radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid; and

ending the association when the hearing aid is removed from the charger.

14. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 13 wherein the predetermined frequency is approximately 744 kHz.

15. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 13 wherein the first period of time is approximately 10 milliseconds.

16. A method of charging a rechargeable battery in a hearing aid, the method comprising the steps of:

detecting the presence of a rechargeable hearing aid in a hearing aid charger;

generating a unique random ID in the charger;

demodulating the unique random ID in the hearing aid;

transmitting the unique random ID back from the hearing aid to the charger, wherein the charger waits a predetermined time after detecting the hearing aid in the charger before transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid;

radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid, wherein the charger charges the hearing aid by oscillating a pulse wave modulation signal at a predetermined frequency, wherein the pulse wave modulation signal is toggled on for a first period of time and off for a second period of time, the second period of time being longer than the first period of time, wherein the second period of time is approximately 190 milliseconds;

establishing the state of charge of the associated hearing aid prior to radiating power from the charger to the hearing aid; and

ending the association when the hearing aid is removed from the charger.

17. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 16 wherein the predetermined frequency is approximately 744 kHz.

18. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 16 wherein the first period of time is approximately 10 milliseconds.

19. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 16 , further comprising the step of transmitting the unique random ID to the hearing aid using an extremely low power protocol.

20. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 19 , further comprising the step of using the demodulated unique random ID in a low power protocol to advertise itself on a network which includes the charger.

21. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 20 , further comprising the step of associating the hearing aid with the charger when the charger which broadcast the unique random ID receives that unique random ID from the hearing aid.

22. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 21 , wherein the charger and the hearing aid are associated using a Bluetooth protocol.

23. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 22 , wherein the wireless protocol is used to communicate between the associated charging station and the hearing aid.

24. A method of charging a rechargeable battery according to claim 16 , wherein the wireless protocol is a bluetooth protocol.
