Abstract

Compositions and methods for improving plant growth are provided herein. Polynucleotides encoding ERF transcription factor proteins, polypeptides encompassing ERF transcription factor proteins, and expression constructs for expressing genes of interest whose expression may improve agronomic properties including but not limited to crop yield, biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and early vigor, plants comprising the polynucleotides, polypeptides, and expression constructs, and methods of producing transgenic plants are also provided.

Claims (20)

1. A transgenic plant cell having stably incorporated into its genome a promoter that drives expression in a plant cell operably linked to an ethylene response factor (ERF) transcription factor protein encoding-sequence, wherein said promoter is heterologous to said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence, wherein said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence encodes a protein having 95% amino acid sequence identity to the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2, and wherein over-expression of said protein in a plant increases seed yield as compared to a control plant of the same species lacking said over-expression.

2. A transgenic plant regenerated from the transgenic plant cell of claim 1 .

3. A transformed seed of the transgenic plant of claim 2 .

4. The transgenic plant cell of claim 1 , wherein said transgenic plant cell is from a monocot plant species.

5. The transgenic plant cell of claim 1 , wherein said transgenic plant cell is from a dicot plant species.

6. The transgenic plant cell of claim 1 , wherein said promoter that drives expression in a plant cell is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:5 and SEQ ID NO: 8.

7. A transgenic plant cell having stably incorporated into its genome a promoter that drives expression in a plant cell operably linked to an ethylene response factor (ERF) transcription factor protein encoding sequence, wherein said promoter is heterologous to said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence, wherein said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence encodes a protein having the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2, and wherein over-expression of said protein in a plant increases seed yield as compared to a control plant of the same species lacking said over-expression.

8. A transgenic plant regenerated from the transgenic plant cell of claim 7 .

9. A transformed seed of the transgenic plant of claim 8 .

10. The transgenic plant cell of claim 7 , wherein said transgenic plant cell is from a monocot plant species.

11. The transgenic plant cell of claim 7 , wherein said transgenic plant cell is from a dicot plant species.

12. The transgenic plant cell of claim 7 , wherein said promoter that drives expression in a plant cell is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:5 and SEQ ID NO: 8.

13. A transgenic plant having stably incorporated into its genome a promoter that drives expression in a plant cell operably linked to an ethylene response factor (ERF) transcription factor protein-encoding sequence, wherein said promoter is heterologous to said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence, wherein said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence encodes a protein having 95% amino acid sequence identity to the amino acid sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 2 and wherein over-expression of said protein in the transgenic plant increases seed yield as compared to a control plant of the same species lacking said over-expression.

14. A transformed seed of the transgenic plant of claim 13 .

15. The transgenic plant of claim 13 , wherein said transgenic plant is from a monocot plant species.

16. The transgenic plant of claim 13 , wherein said transgenic plant is from a dicot plant species.

17. The transgenic plant of claim 13 , wherein said promoter that drives expression in a plant cell is selected from the group consisting of SEQ ID NO:5 and SEQ ID NO: 8.

18. The transgenic plant cell of claim 1 , wherein said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence comprises a nucleotide sequence having at least 95% nucleotide sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1.

19. The transgenic plant cell of claim 7 , wherein said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence comprises the nucleotide sequence as set forth in SEQ ID NO: 1.

20. The transgenic plant of claim 13 , wherein said ERF transcription factor protein-encoding sequence comprises a nucleotide sequence having at least 95% nucleotide sequence identity to SEQ ID NO: 1.
