Abstract

In some implementations, a network device is provided. The network device includes a housing and a set of switch cards, mounted within the housing. The set of switch cards includes a first set of connectors. The network device also includes a set of line cards having a second set of connectors. The set of line cards are oriented parallel to each other and oriented orthogonally to the set of switch cards. The second set of connectors is coupled to the first set of connectors to couple the set of switch cards to the set of line cards. The network device further includes a first set of power supplies disposed along a left side of the housing and a second set of power supplies disposed along a right side of the housing.

Claims (80)

1. A network device, comprising:

a housing;

a set of switch cards, mounted within the housing and comprising a first set of connectors;

a set of line cards comprising a second set of connectors, wherein:

the set of line cards are oriented orthogonally to the set of switch cards; and

the second set of connectors is coupled to the first set of connectors to couple the set of switch cards to the set of line cards;

a first set of power supplies disposed along a left side of the housing and disposed in-line with the set of line cards;

a second set of power supplies disposed along a right side of the housing and disposed in-line with the set of line cards; and

a midplane including a first circuit board assembly disposed between the set of line cards and the first set of power supplies and a second circuit board assembly disposed between the set of line cards and the second set of power supplies, the midplane including no circuit board assembly disposed in a center portion of the housing between the first circuit board assembly and second circuit board assembly.

The network device of claim 1 , further comprising a busbar to provide power to the set of line cards, wherein the busbar is coupled to the first set of power supplies and the second set of power supplies, and wherein the busbar includes a left portion disposed along the left side of the housing and disposed between the first set of power supplies and the set of line cards, and the busbar further includes a right portion disposed along the right side of the housing and disposed between the second set of power supplies and the set of line cards, wherein the busbar and midplane allow air to flow through the set of line cards to the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies.

3. The network device of claim 2 , wherein:

the busbar is a U-shaped busbar and comprises the left portion of the busbar coupled to the first set of power supplies, the right portion of the busbar coupled to the second set of power supplies, and a middle portion of the busbar coupled to the left portion and the right portion; and

the middle portion of the busbar is disposed at a bottom of the housing.

4. The network device of claim 1 , wherein:

the set of switch cards is positioned between the first set of power supplies and the second set of power supplies; and

the set of switch cards is disposed in-line with the set of line cards.

5. The network device of claim 1 , wherein:

the set of line cards is positioned in front of the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies; and

an orthogonal orientation of the set of switch cards and the set of line cards allows air to flow through the set of line cards to the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies.

6. The network device of claim 1 , further comprising:

a set of supervisor cards coupled to the set of switch cards, wherein:

the set of supervisor cards is oriented orthogonally to the set of switch cards; and

the set of supervisor cards is oriented parallel with the set of line cards.

7. The network device of claim 6 , wherein:

the set of supervisor cards is positioned in front of the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies; and

air flows through the set of supervisor cards to the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies.

8. The network device of claim 6 , wherein:

the first circuit board assembly is coupled to the first set of power supplies and the set of supervisor cards; and

the second circuit board assembly is coupled to the second set of power supplies and the set of supervisor cards, and wherein a space between the first circuit board and the second circuit board allows air to flow.

9. The network device of claim 6 , wherein the set of supervisor cards is coupled to a busbar.

10. The network device of claim 1 , wherein the busbar comprises:

a left portion coupled to the first set of power supplies;

a right portion coupled to the second set of power supplies; and

a middle portion coupled to the left portion and the right portion, the middle portion is disposed at a middle of the housing and the busbar disposed between the first set of power supplies and the second set of power supplies, and the set of line cards.

11. The network device of claim 1 , wherein airflow from a front of the network device is directed through the set of line cards towards the set of switch cards.

12. The network device of claim 1 , wherein airflow from a front of the network device is directed through the set of line cards and through a busbar towards the first set of power supplies and the second set of power supplies.

13. The network device of claim 1 , wherein:

the housing has a height of ten rack units (RU);

the set of line cards comprises eight line cards; and

the set of switch cards comprises two switch cards; and

the network device further comprises two supervisor cards.

14. The network device of claim 1 , wherein the set of line cards comprises a Power Over Ethernet (POE) line card.

15. A method of manufacturing a network device,

the method comprising:

obtaining a first set of power supplies, a second set of power supplies, a set of line cards, and a set of switch cards;

installing, within a housing, the first set of power supplies along a left side of the housing;

installing, within the housing, the second set of power supplies along a right side of the housing;

installing, within the housing, the set of switch cards between the first set of power supplies and the second set of power supplies;

installing, within the housing, the set of line cards in-line with the first set of power supplies, the second set of power supplies, and the set of switch cards, wherein:

the set of line cards are oriented orthogonally to the set of switch cards; and

the set of line cards are oriented parallel with each other,

installing, within the housing, a first circuit board assembly of a midplane disposed between the set of line cards and the first set of power supplies; and

installing, within the housing, a second circuit board assembly of the midplane disposed between the set of line cards and the second set of power supplies, the midplane including no circuit board assembly in a center portion of the housing between the first circuit board assembly and second circuit board assembly.

16. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

installing, within the housing, a set of supervisor cards in front of the first set of power supplies, the second set of power supplies, and the set of switch cards, wherein:

the set of supervisor cards are oriented orthogonally to the set of switch cards;

the set of supervisor cards are oriented parallel with each other and the set of line cards.

17. The method of claim 15 , further comprising:

installing, within the housing, a left portion of a busbar along the left side of the housing between the set of line cards and the first set of power supplies;

installing, within the housing, a right portion of the busbar along the right side of the housing between the set of line cards and the second set of power supplies; and

wherein installing the first set of power supplies comprises coupling the first set of power supplies to the left portion of the busbar;

wherein installing the second set of power supplies comprises coupling the second set of power supplies to the right portion of the busbar;

wherein installing the set of switch cards comprises coupling the set of switch cards to the busbar; and

wherein installing the set of line cards comprises coupling the set of line cards to the busbar.

18. A network device, comprising:

a housing;

a set of switch cards, mounted within the housing and comprising a first set of connectors;

a set of line cards comprising a second set of connectors, wherein:

the set of line cards are oriented orthogonally to the set of switch cards; and

the second set of connectors is coupled to the first set of connectors to couple the set of switch cards to the set of line cards;

a first set of power supplies disposed along a left side of the housing and disposed in-line with the set of line cards;

a second set of power supplies disposed along a right side of the housing and disposed in-line with the set of line cards;

a busbar coupled to the set of line cards, the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies; and

a midplane including a first circuit board assembly disposed between the set of line cards and the first set of power supplies and a second circuit board assembly disposed between the set of line card and the second set of power supplies, the midplane including no circuit board assembly disposed in a center portion of the housing between the first circuit board assembly and second circuit board assembly, the midplane and busbar allowing air to flow from a front of the housing through the set of line cards and center portion of the housing to the set of switch cards, first set of power supplies and second set of power supplies.

19. The network device of claim 18 , wherein the busbar has a left portion disposed along the left side of the housing and disposed between the first set of power supplies and the set of line cards, and the busbar further includes a right portion disposed along the right side of the housing and disposed between the second set of power supplies and the set of line cards.

20. The network device of claim 18 , wherein:

the set of switch cards is positioned between the first set of power supplies and the second set of power supplies;

the set of switch cards is disposed in-line with the set of line cards

the set of line cards is positioned in front of the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies; and

an orthogonal orientation of the set of switch cards and the set of line cards allows air to flow through the set of line cards to the set of switch cards, the first set of power supplies, and the second set of power supplies.
