Abstract

The present invention relates to flame-retardant polyamide compositions. In various aspects, the present invention provides a flame-retardant polyamide composition including a polyamide that is about 30 wt % to about 99 wt % of the composition. The polyamide has a relative viscosity (RV) of ≥20 to ≤33 as measured as an 8.4 wt % solution in 90% formic acid. The composition also includes one or more flame-retardant additives. Various aspects of the present invention provide compositions having enhanced flame-retardant properties as compared to corresponding compositions including the same or greater concentration of flame-retardant additive but using a polyamide that has an RV that is <20 or >33.

Claims (31)

1 . A flame-retardant polyamide composition comprising:

a polyamide that is about 30 wt % to about 99 wt % of the composition, the polyamide having a relative viscosity (RV) of ≥20 to ≤33 as measured as an 8.4 wt % solution in 90% formic acid; and

one or more flame-retardant additives;

wherein the flame-retardant polyamide composition is substantially free of poly(arylene ether) and non-polyamide copolymers thereof, and the composition has a flame retardancy rating at 0.4 mm of V-2, V-1, or V-0 as measured by Underwriters' Laboratories Test No. UL 94.

2 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition is substantially free of styrenic copolymers, polyolefins, non-polyamide polyesters, and derivatives thereof.

3 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the composition has a flame retardancy rating at 0.4 mm of V-0 as measured by Underwriters' Laboratories Test No. UL 94.

4 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyamide has a RV of ≥20 to ≤30 as measured as an 8.4 wt % solution in 90% formic acid.

5 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the flame-retardant polyamide composition is a fiber.

6 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyamide is nylon 66.

7 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the polyamide is about 35 wt % to about 96 wt % of the composition.

8 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the one or more flame retardants are about 1 wt % to about 50 wt % of the composition.

9 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the one or more flame-retardant additives are halogen-containing flame-retardant additives, halogen-containing flame-retardant additives with synergists, phosphorus-containing flame-retardant additives, inorganic flame-retardant additives, nitrogen-containing flame-retardant additives, nitrogen-containing flame-retardant additives with synergists, or a combination thereof.

10 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein the one or more flame-retardant additives are chosen from melamine cyanurate, aluminum diethylphosphinate, melamine polyphosphate, bromopolystyrene, antimony trioxide, dehydrated zinc borate, and a combination thereof.

11 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more reinforcing fillers.

12 . The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more reinforcing fillers are carbon, glass, fibrous materials, Kevlar, cellulose, graphene, silicates, nanotubes, diamonds, or a combination thereof.

13 . The composition of claim 11 , wherein the reinforcing filler is glass fibers.

14 . The composition of claim 11 , wherein the one or more reinforcing fillers are about 0.1 to about 62 wt % of the composition.

15 . The composition of claim 1 , further comprising one or more processability additives.

16 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein another composition that comprises a polyamide having an RV of <20 or >33 as measured as an 8.4 wt % solution in 90% formic acid instead of an RV of ≥20 to ≤33 but is otherwise identical has less flame-retardancy as measured by Underwriters' Laboratories Test No. UL 94.

17 . The composition of claim 1 , wherein another composition that comprises a polyamide having an RV of <20 or >33 as measured as an 8.4 wt % solution in 90% formic acid instead of an RV of ≥20 to ≤33 but is otherwise identical requires a greater concentration of the one or more flame-retardant additives to achieve the same flame-retardancy as measured by Underwriters' Laboratories Test No. UL 94.

18 . A method of making the flame-retardant polyamide composition of claim 1 , the method comprising:

combining the polyamide with the one or more flame-retardant additives to form the flame-retardant polyamide composition.

19 . A flame-retardant polyamide composition comprising:

nylon 66 that is about 80 wt % to about 99 wt % of the composition, the nylon 66 having an RV of ≥20 to ≤33 as measured as an 8.4 wt % solution in 90% formic acid; and

one or more flame-retardant additives that are about 1 wt % to about 20 wt % of the composition, the one or more flame-retardant additives chosen from melamine cyanurate, aluminum diethylphosphinate, melamine polyphosphate, bromopolystyrene, antimony trioxide, dehydrated zinc borate, and a combination thereof;

wherein the composition is substantially free of glass fibers, the composition is substantially free of poly(arylene ether) and non-polyamide copolymers thereof, and the composition has a flame retardancy rating at 0.4 mm of V-0 as measured by Underwriters' Laboratories Test No. UL 94.

20 . A flame-retardant polyamide composition comprising:

nylon 66 that is about 30 wt % to about 80 wt % of the composition, the nylon 66 having an RV of ≥20 to ≤33 as measured as an 8.4 wt % solution in 90% formic acid;

one or more flame-retardant additives that are about 10 wt % to 50 wt % of the composition, the one or more flame-retardant additives chosen from melamine cyanurate, aluminum diethylphosphinate, melamine polyphosphate, bromopolystyrene, antimony trioxide, dehydrated zinc borate, and a combination thereof; and

a glass fiber reinforcing filler that is about 1 wt % to about 40 wt % of the composition;

wherein the composition is substantially free of poly(arylene ether) and non-polyamide copolymers thereof, and the composition has a flame retardancy rating at 0.4 mm of V-0 as measured by Underwriters' Laboratories Test No. UL 94.
