Abstract

Travel-related-information messages (TRIMS) are received from one or more information sources, and information included in the messages is separated into a first (e.g. TPEG™) or second (e.g. TPEG+) group. A broadcast area to which the information included in the TRIMs is to be broadcast is determined. A further determination indicates that a subset of information assigned to the first group is to be reassigned to the second group. The subset of information is reassigned from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area. The information included in the first group and the second group is delivered to one or more processing modules that generate a first TRIM reporting message using information included in the first group and a second TRIM reporting message using information included in the second group.

Claims (61)

1. A method comprising:

receiving travel-related-information messages (TRIMs) from one or more information sources;

separating information included in the TRIMs into at least two different groups by assigning a first type of information included in the TRIMs to a first group, and assigning a second type of information included in the TRIMs to a second group;

determining a broadcast area to which the information included in the TRIMs is to be broadcast;

determining that a subset of information assigned to the first group is to be reassigned to the second group;

reassigning the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area, wherein reassigning the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

determining a geographic area associated with the information included in the TRIMS; and

reassigning the subset of information based on the geographic area;

delivering information included in the first group and the second group to one or more processing modules configured to generate a first TRIM reporting message using information included in the first group and a second TRIM reporting message using information included in the second group;

generating the first TRIM reporting message and the second TRIM reporting message; and

transmitting the first TRIM reporting message and the second TRIM reporting message to a station-importer server configured to multiplex the first TRIM reporting message and the second TRIM reporting message with media content.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein reassigning the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

reassigning, during a first reporting period, a first subset of the subset of information assigned to the first group; and

reassigning, during a subsequent reporting period, a different subset of the subset of information assigned to the first group.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein reassigning the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

reassigning at least some predictive traffic information included in the subset of information.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein reassigning the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

removing excess information from the first group to decrease a size of the first TRIM reporting message.

5. A device comprising:

a processor and associated memory configured to implement a travel message server, the travel message server comprising:

at least one interface configured to receive travel-related-information messages (TRIMs) from one or more information sources;

a load balancer configured to:

separate information included in the TRIMs into at least two different groups by assigning a first type of information included in the TRIMs to a first group, and assigning a second type of information included in the TRIMs to a second group;

determine a broadcast area to which the information included in the TRIMs is to be broadcast;

determine that a subset of information assigned to the first group is to be reassigned to the second group;

reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area, wherein reassigning the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

determining a geographic area associated with the information included in the TRIMS; and

reassigning the subset of information based on the geographic area; and

deliver information included in the first group and the second group to one or more processing modules configured to generate a first TRIM reporting message using information included in the first group and a second TRIM reporting message using information included in the second group.

6. The device of claim 5 , further including:

message generation modules configured to generate a first TRIM reporting message and a second TRIM reporting message.

7. The device of claim 6 , further including:

a first encoder configured to generate the first TRIM reporting message; and

a second encoder configured to generate the second TRIM reporting message.

8. The device of claim 5 , wherein the load balancer is further configured to:

reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area by:

reassigning, during a first reporting period, a first subset of the subset of information assigned to the first group; and

reassigning, during a subsequent reporting period, a different subset of the subset of information assigned to the first group.

9. The device of claim 5 , wherein the load balancer is further configured to:

reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area by reassigning at least some predictive traffic information included in the subset of information.

10. The device of claim 5 , wherein the load balancer is further configured to:

reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area by removing excess information from the first group to decrease a size of the first TRIM reporting message.

11. A computer readable medium tangibly embodying a program of instructions, the program of instructions comprising:

at least one instruction to receive travel-related-information messages (TRIMs) from one or more information sources;

at least one instruction to separate information included in the TRIMs into at least two different groups by assigning a first type of information included in the TRIMs to a first group, and assigning a second type of information included in the TRIMs to a second group;

at least one instruction to determine a broadcast area to which the information included in the TRIMs is to be broadcast;

at least one instruction to determine that a subset of information assigned to the first group is to be reassigned to the second group;

at least one instruction to reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area;

at least one instruction to deliver information included in the first group and the second group to one or more processing modules configured to generate a first TRIM reporting message using information included in the first group and a second TRIM reporting message using information included in the second group;

wherein the at least one instruction to reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

at least one instruction to determine geographic areas associated with the information included in the TRIMs;

at least one instruction to reassign a first subset of the subset of information assigned to the first group, based on the geographic areas, during a first reporting period; and

at least one instruction to reassign a different subset of the subset of information assigned to the first group, based on the geographic areas, during a subsequent reporting period.

12. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , further including:

at least one instruction to generate the first TRIM reporting message and the second TRIM reporting message.

13. The computer readable medium of claim 12 , further including:

at least one instruction to transmit the first TRIM reporting message and the second TRIM reporting message to a station-importer server configured to multiplex the first TRIM reporting message and the second TRIM reporting message with media content.

14. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein at least one instruction to reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

at least one instruction to reassign the subset of information based on a road class associated with the subset of information.

15. The computer readable medium of claim 11 , wherein at least one instruction to reassign the subset of information from the first group to the second group based on parameters associated with the broadcast area includes:

at least one instruction to remove excess information from the first group to decrease a size of the first TRIM reporting message.
