Abstract

This disclosure describes example alarm notification systems that can enable a clinician to respond to an alarm notification received via a computing device, which may have more advanced functionality than a pager. The clinician device may be a mobile device, such as a cellphone or smartphone, tablet, laptop, personal digital assistant (PDA), or the like. The clinician device may communicate with a remote server to obtain patient data generated by a patient device at the point-of-care (such as a bedside device or patient-worn monitor). This patient data may be continuous monitoring data for one or more patients. A mobile application (optionally a browser application) on the clinician device can enable the clinician to view continuous monitoring data for multiple patients, as well as view and respond to alarms and alerts, all from the clinician device, regardless of location.

Claims (86)

1. A system for remotely interacting with a patient monitor, the system comprising:

software instructions storable on a memory device useable by a mobile computing device operated by a clinician, the software instructions causing a hardware processor of the mobile computing device to:

receive an alarm notification from a remote server over a network, the alarm notification comprising a measured physiological parameter value corresponding to a patient; and

output a notifications user interface to present the alarm notification on a touchscreen display of the mobile device, the notifications user interface comprising:

an alarm notification tile that outputs information about an alarm for the patient, the alarm notification tile user-selectable by swiping a portion of the touchscreen display corresponding to the alarm notification tile;

wherein swiping the alarm notification tile causes the alarm notification tile to move so as to reveal options for accepting the alarm and forwarding the alarm;

wherein user selection of the option for accepting the alarm causes the mobile device to wirelessly transmit an indication of acceptance of the alarm to the remote server; and

wherein user selection of the option for forwarding the alarm causes the mobile device to wirelessly transmit an indication of forwarding the alarm to the remote server.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the alarm notification tile depicts a patient identifier and a hospital room number.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information output about the alarm comprises the physiological parameter value.

4. The system of claim 3 , wherein the information output about the alarm comprises a glow graphic behind the physiological parameter value.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the information output about the alarm comprises a colored border of the alarm notification tile.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the alarm notification tile comprises a visual indication of an alarm escalation or re-escalation.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the alarm notification tile comprises a visual indication regarding whether a clinician has accepted the alarm.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the alarm notification is received by the remote server from a point-of-care device over an IEEE 802.11a WiFi network or a cellular network.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein the alarm notification tile is further user-selectable to be swiped in a different direction than said swiping to reveal an option to view additional details about second physiological parameter values of the patient.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein selection of the option to view additional details about the patient causes a patient data user interface to be displayed on the touchscreen display, the patient data user interface comprising one or both of trends and waveforms corresponding to the second physiological parameter values.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the patient data user interface comprises an option to suspend audible output of the alarm at a point-of-care device associated with the patient.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the patient data user interface is a graphical user interface comprising:

a plurality of rows, each of the rows displaying a first physiological parameter value and a corresponding first trend line derived from the trend data; and

a grid of boxes disposed in an area of the graphical user interface separate from the plurality of rows, two or more of the boxes displaying second physiological parameter values but not trend lines;

wherein the boxes of the grid are user-selectable, such that a user can drag a selected one of the boxes to a selected one of the rows so that the second physiological parameter value that was displayed in the selected box is instead displayed in the selected row along with a corresponding second trend line.

The system of claim 12 , wherein the graphical user interface is a first graphical user interface, and further comprising a second graphical user interface configured to output either a plurality of second rows of data corresponding to multiple patients including the patient or a second grid having a plurality of second boxes of data corresponding to the multiple patients including the patient.

14. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second boxes contain a patient identifier and a room number but not any physiological parameter values.

15. The system of claim 13 , wherein the second boxes each have an outline that indicates a status of the patient, wherein the status is one of: an alarm status, an admission status, and a connection to a point-of-care device status.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the patient data user interface comprises an instrument selector region that is user-swipable to access a second patient data user interface corresponding to a second point-of-care device connected to the patient.

17. The system of claim 16 , wherein the second point-of-care device is selected from a pump and a ventilator.

18. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor further:

receives a user selection of a first configuration group from a plurality of configuration groups; and

transmits, to the remote server over the network, the user selection of the first configuration group, wherein the alarm notification is received by the remote server from a point-of-care device that is assigned to the first configuration group.

19. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor further:

receives a user selection to discharge the patient from a point-of-care device; and

transmits, to the remote server over the network, the user selection to discharge the patient from a point-of-care device.

20. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor further:

receives, from the remote server over the network, a plurality of events, wherein each event of the plurality of events comprises a second measured physiological parameter value corresponding to the patient; and

outputs a timeline user interface to present the plurality of events.

21. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor further:

detects a failed connection with the remote server over the network;

causes presentation of a visual warning of the failed connection;

establishes a connection with the remote server over the network; and

causes presentation of a visual indicator of the connection.

22. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor further:

receives a plurality of alarm notifications from the remote server over the network;

determines, from the plurality of alarm notifications, a first subset of notifications comprising an unread status;

identifies a plurality of categories from the first subset of notifications, wherein each category of the plurality of categories corresponds to an escalation status;

determines, from the plurality of alarm notifications, a second subset of notifications comprising an alarming status; and

outputs a dashboard user interface comprising:

a first summary indicator of the first subset of notifications;

a plurality of second summary indicators for each of the plurality of categories; and

a third summary indicator of the second subset of notifications.

23. The system of claim 22 , wherein the first summary indicator comprises a first quantity of the first subset of notifications.

24. The system of claim 22 , wherein the first summary indicator comprises a first number.

25. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor further:

receives a plurality of alarm notifications from the remote server over the network;

determines, from the plurality of alarm notifications, a first subset of notifications for the patient associated with a first point-of-care device, wherein each notification of the first subset of notifications comprises a first measured physiological parameter value corresponding to the patient;

determines, from the plurality of alarm notifications, a second subset of notifications for the patient associated with a second point-of-care device, wherein each notification of the second subset of notifications comprises a second measured physiological parameter value corresponding to the patient; and

outputs a patient alarming user interface for the patient comprising:

a first visual representation for each first measured physiological parameter value from the first subset of notifications grouped by the first point-of-care device; and

a second visual representation for each second measured physiological parameter value from the second subset of notifications grouped by the second point-of-care device.

26. The system of claim 1 , wherein the hardware processor further:

receives a first user selection identifying a point-of-care device;

control an optical device to capture barcode data from a barcode for the patient;

identify the patient from the barcode data;

receives a second user selection identifying a second clinician to be assigned to the patient; and

transmits, to the remote server over the network, admit data identifying the point-of-care device, the patient, and the second clinician to admit the patient to the point-of-care device.

27. A method of remotely interacting with a patient monitor, the method comprising:

under control of a mobile computing device comprising a hardware processor,

outputting a first user interface comprising a plurality of patient tiles, each patient tile comprising at least an identifier associated with a patient, and at least some of the patient tiles comprising a visual indication of an alarm, wherein each tile is user-selectable;

receiving a first user selection of a first one of the patient tiles, the user selection comprising a swipe or long press of the first patient tile;

in response to receiving the first user selection, outputting options for the user to forward a first alarm associated with the first patient tile, to accept the first alarm, or to view live data corresponding to the first patient tile;

receiving a second user selection of one of the options; and

outputting a second user interface based on the second user selection.

28. The method of claim 27 , wherein the second user selection selects to view live data corresponding to the first patient tile.

29. The method of claim 28 , wherein the second user interface comprises a plurality of rows, the rows displaying first physiological parameter values and trend lines; and a grid of boxes separate from the plurality of rows, the boxes displaying second physiological parameter values but not trend lines.

30. The method of claim 29 , wherein the second user interface further comprises an option to suspend an audible output of the alarm.

31. The method of claim 27 , further comprising outputting an option to remotely adjust alarm settings of a point of care device associated with the patient.

32. A method of conducting a patient handoff between clinicians, the method comprising:

under control of a mobile computing device comprising a hardware processor,

identifying a first clinician and a second clinician for a handoff workflow for a patient;

receiving, from a remote server over a network, a plurality of notes, wherein each note of the plurality of notes comprises (i) textual data regarding the patient, and (ii) a first timestamp;

receiving, from the remote server over the network, a plurality of events, wherein each event of the plurality of events comprises (i) a second measured physiological parameter value corresponding to the patient, and (ii) a second timestamp;

outputting a first user interface comprising (i) the plurality of notes ordered by each respective first timestamp, and (ii) a first visual representation of at least some of the textual data regarding the patient;

receiving a first confirmation that a first review of the first user interface comprising the plurality of notes has been completed;

outputting a second user interface comprising (i) the plurality of events ordered by each respective second timestamp, and (ii) a second visual representation for each second measured physiological parameter value;

receiving a second confirmation that a second review of the second user interface comprising the plurality of events has been completed; and

in response to receiving the first confirmation and the second confirmation, transmitting an indication that the handoff workflow for the patient has been completed by the first clinician and the second clinician.
