Abstract

The overall architecture and details of a scalable video fingerprinting and identification system that is robust with respect to many classes of video distortions is described. In this system, a fingerprint for a piece of multimedia content is composed of a number of compact signatures, along with traversal hash signatures and associated metadata. Numerical descriptors are generated for features found in a multimedia clip, signatures are generated from these descriptors, and a reference signature database is constructed from these signatures. Query signatures are also generated for a query multimedia clip. These query signatures are searched against the reference database using a fast similarity search procedure, to produce a candidate list of matching signatures. This candidate list is further analyzed to find the most likely reference matches. Signature correlation is performed between the likely reference matches and the query clip to improve detection accuracy.

Claims (37)

1. A method comprising:

determining, for respective sub-regions of a set of sub-regions that each include pixels of a frame of a query video, using a computing system, respective pixel color data corresponding to pixels included within the respective sub-regions;

comparing, using the computing system, the respective pixel color data for the respective sub-regions with at least one median color value;

determining, for the respective sub-regions, using the computing system, respective descriptor values based on the comparing;

generating, using the computing system, fingerprint data for the frame of the query video based on the respective descriptor values for the respective sub-regions; and

identifying, using the computing system, a reference video corresponding to the query video using the fingerprint data and reference fingerprint data of a reference database, wherein the reference fingerprint data corresponds to a plurality of reference videos and is derived using pixel color data for the plurality of reference videos.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the respective pixel color data for the respective sub-regions is represented in multiple components, and wherein the at least one median color value comprises median color values for at least two of the components.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the multiple components comprise red, green, and blue components.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the multiple components comprise a luminance component and a chrominance component.

5. The method of claim 2 , wherein determining the respective descriptor values for the respective sub-regions comprises determining multiple descriptor values for each of the respective sub-regions.

6. The method of claim 2 , wherein generating the fingerprint data based on the respective descriptor values comprises generating a signature using the respective descriptor values and one or more threshold values.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the signature is an N-dimensional signature, wherein N is a multiple of the number of sub-regions within the set of sub-regions.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing system comprises a user device.

9. A non-transitory computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions that are executable to cause a computing system to perform functions comprising:

determining, for respective sub-regions of a set of sub-regions that each include pixels of a frame of a query video, respective pixel color data corresponding to pixels included within the respective sub-regions;

comparing the respective pixel color data for the respective sub-regions with at least one median color value;

determining, for the respective sub-regions, respective descriptor values based on the comparing;

generating fingerprint data for the frame of the query video based on the respective descriptor values for the respective sub-regions; and

identifying a reference video corresponding to the query video using the fingerprint data and reference fingerprint data of a reference database, wherein the reference fingerprint data corresponds to a plurality of reference videos and is derived using pixel color data for the plurality of reference videos.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 9 , wherein the respective pixel color data for the respective sub-regions is represented in multiple components, and wherein the at least one median color value comprises median color values for at least two of the components.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the multiple components comprise red, green, and blue components.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein the multiple components comprise a luminance component and a chrominance component.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein determining the respective descriptor values for the respective sub-regions comprises determining multiple descriptor values for each of the respective sub-regions.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 10 , wherein generating the fingerprint data based on the respective descriptor values comprises generating a signature using the respective descriptor values and one or more threshold values.

15. A computing system comprising:

a processing unit; and

a computer-readable medium having stored therein instructions that are executable to cause the computing system to perform functions comprising:

determining, for respective sub-regions of a set of sub-regions that each include pixels of a frame of a query video, respective pixel color data corresponding to pixels included within the respective sub-regions,

comparing the respective pixel color data for the respective sub-regions with at least one median color value,

determining, for the respective sub-regions, respective descriptor values based on the comparing,

generating fingerprint data for the frame of the query video based on the respective descriptor values for the respective sub-regions, and

identifying a reference video corresponding to the query video using the fingerprint data and reference fingerprint data of a reference database, wherein the reference fingerprint data corresponds to a plurality of reference videos and is derived using pixel color data for the plurality of reference videos.

16. The computing system of claim 15 , wherein the respective pixel color data for the respective sub-regions is represented in multiple components, and wherein the at least one median color value comprises median color values for at least two of the components.

17. The computing system of claim 16 , wherein the multiple components comprise red, green, and blue components.
