Abstract

The present teaching relates to searching. In one example, a search query is received from a person. A plurality of search results are retrieved based on the search query. An intent of the person is estimated with respect to at least some of the plurality of search results. The estimated intent is what the person intends to do with respect to the at least some of the plurality of search results. The plurality of search results are provided based on the estimated intent of the person.

Claims (47)

1. A method, implemented on a computing device having at least one processor, storage, and a communication platform capable of connecting to a network for enhancing search results, the method comprising:

obtaining a plurality of search results related to a query from a user, wherein the query is issued in an application environment;

identifying other users related to the user based on a similarity between the user and each of the other users;

estimating an intent of the user, selected from a plurality of different categories of intents, with respect to each of the plurality of search results based on contextual information, determined in the application environment, associated with activities of the other users with respect to the search result, the intent being indicative of what the user intends to do with the search result;

ranking the plurality of search results based on the intent of the user;

refining the plurality of search results based on the ranking of the plurality of search results; and

providing the refined search results to the user.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein contextual information includes information related to a locale at which the query is issued, and a type of device used by the user to issue the query.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein estimating the intent is via collaborative filtering based on information related to the other users with respect to the plurality of search results.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the plurality of different categories of intents comprise one or more of:

an intent to save a search result;

an intent to share the search result; or

an intent to click the search result.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining an application and a setting within the application in which the person issued the search query, wherein the application is one of an email application, a social networking application, a text message application, or a web-search application.

6. A system for enhancing search results, comprising:

an intent estimator configured to:

obtain a plurality of search results related to a query from a user, wherein the query is issued in an application environment,

identify other users related to the user based on a similarity between the user and each of the other users, and

estimate an intent of the user, selected from a plurality of different categories of intents, with respect to each of the plurality of search results based on contextual information determined in the application environment, associated with activities of the other users with respect to the search result, the intent being indicative of what the user intends to do with the search result; and

a search result enhancer configured to:

rank the plurality of search results based on the intent of the user,

refine the plurality of search results based on the ranking of the plurality of search results, and

provide the refined search results to the user.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein contextual information includes information related to a locale at which the query is issued, and a type of device used by the user to issue the query.

8. The system of claim 6 , wherein the intent estimator is configured to estimate the intent is via collaborative filtering based on information related to the other users with respect to the plurality of search results.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the plurality of different categories of intents comprise one or more of:

an intent to save a search result;

an intent to share the search result; or

an intent to click the search result.

10. The system of claim 6 , wherein the intent estimator is further configured to:

determine an application and a setting within the application in which the person issued the search query, wherein the application is one of an email application, a social networking application, a text message application, or a web-search application.

11. A non-transitory, machine-readable medium having information recorded thereon for enhancing search results, wherein the information, when read by a machine, effectuate operations comprising:

obtaining a plurality of search results related to a query from a user, wherein the query is issued in an application environment;

identifying other users related to the user based on a similarity between the user and each of the other users;

estimating an intent of the user, selected from a plurality of different categories of intents, with respect to each of the plurality of search results based on contextual information, determined in the application environment, associated with activities of the other users with respect to the search result, the intent being indicative of what the user intends to do with the search result;

ranking the plurality of search results based on the intent of the user;

refining the plurality of search results based on the ranking of the plurality of search results; and

providing the refined search results to the user.

12. The medium of claim 11 , wherein contextual information includes information related to a locale at which the query is issued, and a type of device used by the user to issue the query.

13. The medium of claim 11 , wherein estimating the intent is via collaborative filtering based on information related to the other users with respect to the plurality of search results.

14. The medium of claim 11 , wherein the plurality of different categories of intents comprise one or more of:

an intent to save a search result;

an intent to share the search result; or

an intent to click the search result.

15. The medium of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise:

determining an application and a setting within the application in which the person issued the search query, wherein the application is one of an email application, a social networking application, a text message application, or a web-search application.
