Multi-token provisioning, online purchase transaction processing, and card life cycle management systems and methods
Systems, methods, and software are disclosed for provisioning tokens in a networked computing environment including merchants participating in payment networks. The method includes receiving, by a merchant processor, card account data of a purchase card from a cardholder. The method includes determining, by the merchant processor, that the card account data includes a multi-token enabled BIN. The method includes, in response to determining that the card account data includes the multi-token enabled BIN, receiving and storing, by the merchant processor and in a memory of the merchant, respectively, a primary token associated with a front-of-card brand of the purchase card. The method includes, in response to receiving the primary token, transmitting, by the merchant processor, a request for a secondary token. The method includes receiving and storing, by the merchant processor and in the merchant memory, respectively, the secondary token simultaneously with storing the primary token.
1. A computing system associated with a merchant, the computing system comprising:
a network interface for communicating over one or more data networks with (i) client devices associated with cardholders and (ii) computing systems associated with token service providers (TSPs);
one or more processors;
one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums; and
program instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums that are executable by the one or more processors to cause the computing system to perform functions comprising:
receiving, via the network interface from a client device associated with a cardholder, card account data of a purchase card issued to the cardholder;
determining that the card account data includes a multi-token enabled bank identification number (BIN);
in response to determining that the card account data includes the multi-token enabled BIN, requesting, via the network interface from a first computing system associated with a first TSP, a primary network-based token associated with a front-of-card brand of the purchase card, wherein the primary network-based token comprises a first computer-generated identifier of the purchase card that is to be utilized in place of a primary account number (PAN) when processing network-based financial transactions involving the cardholder;
receiving, via the network interface from the first computing system associated with the first TSP, the primary network-based token;
storing the primary network-based token in the one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums;
transmitting, via the network interface to a second computing system associated with a second TSP, a request for a secondary network-based token, wherein the secondary network-based token comprises a second computer-generated identifier of the purchase card that is to be utilized in place of the PAN when processing network-based financial transactions involving the cardholder;
receiving, via the network interface from the second computing system associated with the second TSP, the secondary network-based token;
storing the secondary network-based token in the one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums;
based on network routing preferences, selecting one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token to use for a given network-based financial transaction involving the cardholder; and
transmitting, via the network interface to a given payment network, an authorization request for the given network-based financial transaction that comprises the selected one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network- based token.
2. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the second TSP is associated with a back-of-card brand of the purchase card.
3. The method computing system of claim 1 , wherein the purchase card is a debit card.
4. The method computing system of claim 1 , wherein the first TSP is associated with a payment network for the front-of-card brand.
5. The computing system of claim 2 , wherein the second TSP is associated with a payment network for the back-of-card brand.
6. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the selected one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token comprises the stored primary network-based token, and wherein the given payment network comprises a payment network associated with the stored primary network-based token.
7. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the selected one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token comprises the stored secondary network-based token, and wherein the given payment network comprises a payment network associated with the stored secondary network-based token.
8. The computing system of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums that are executable by the one or more processors to cause the computing system to perform functions comprising:
after transmitting the authorization request for the given network-based financial transaction, receiving, from the given payment network, a confirmation for the given network- based financial transaction.
9. The computing system of claim 1 , further comprising program instructions stored on the one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums that are executable by the one or more processors to cause the computing system to perform functions comprising:
before selecting the one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token to use for the given network-based financial transaction, determining the network routing preferences based on transaction cost information.
10. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein the given network-based financial transaction comprises a purchase or payment transaction.
11. The computing system of claim 1 , wherein storing the secondary network-based token in the one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums comprises storing the secondary network-based token side-by-side with the primary network-based token.
12. A non-transitory computer-readable medium, wherein the non-transitory computer-readable medium is provisioned with program instructions that, when executed by at least one processor, cause a computing system associated with a merchant to:
receive, from a client device associated with a cardholder, card account data of a purchase card issued to the cardholder;
determine that the card account data includes a multi-token enabled bank identification number (BIN);
in response to determining that the card account data includes the multi-token enabled BIN, request, from a first computing system associated with a first token service provider (TSP), a primary network-based token associated with a front-of-card brand of the purchase card, wherein the primary network-based token comprises a first computer-generated identifier of the purchase card that is to be utilized in place of a primary account number (PAN) when processing network-based financial transactions involving the cardholder;
receive, from the first computing system associated with the first TSP, the primary network-based token;
store the primary network-based token at the computing system;
transmit, to a second computing system associated with a second TSP, a request for a secondary network-based token, wherein the secondary network-based token comprises a second computer-generated identifier of the purchase card that is to be utilized in place of the PAN when processing network-based financial transactions involving the cardholder;
receive, from the second computing system associated with the second TSP, the secondary network-based token;
store the secondary network-based token at the computing system;
based on network routing preferences, select one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token to use for a given network-based financial transaction involving the cardholder; and
transmit, to a given payment network, an authorization request for the given network-based financial transaction that comprises the selected one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token.
13. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the second TSP is associated with a back-of-card brand of the purchase card.
14. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the selected one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token comprises the stored primary network-based token, and wherein the given payment network comprises a payment network associated with the stored primary network-based token.
15. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 1 , wherein the selected one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token comprises the stored secondary network-based token, and wherein the given payment network comprises a payment network associated with the stored secondary network-based token.
16. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the program instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, further cause the computing system to:
after transmitting the authorization request for the given network-based financial transaction, receive, from the given payment network, a confirmation for the given network- based financial transaction.
17. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the program instructions, when executed by the at least one processor, further cause the computing system to:
before selecting the one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token to use for the given network-based financial transaction, determine the network routing preferences based on transaction cost information.
18. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein the given network-based financial transaction comprises a purchase or payment transaction.
19. The non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 12 , wherein storing the secondary network-based token in the one or more non-transitory computer-readable mediums comprises storing the secondary network-based token side-by-side with the primary network-based token.
20. A method carried out by a computing system associated with a merchant, the method comprising:
receiving, from a client device associated with a cardholder, card account data of a purchase card issued to the cardholder;
determining that the card account data includes a multi-token enabled bank identification number (BIN);
in response to determining that the card account data includes the multi-token enabled BIN, requesting, from a first computing system associated with a first token service provider (TSP), a primary network- based token associated with a front-of-card brand of the purchase card, wherein the primary network-based token comprises a first computer-generated identifier of the purchase card that is to be utilized in place of a primary account number (PAN) when processing network-based financial transactions involving the cardholder;
receiving, from the first computing system associated with the first TSP, the primary network-based token;
storing the primary network-based token at the computing system;
transmitting, to a second computing system associated with a second TSP, a request for a secondary network-based token, wherein the secondary network-based token comprises a second computer-generated identifier of the purchase card that is to be utilized in place of the PAN when processing network-based financial transactions involving the cardholder;
receiving, from the second computing system associated with the second TSP, the secondary network-based token;
storing the secondary network-based token at the computing system;
based on network routing preferences, selecting one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token to use for a given network-based financial transaction involving the cardholder; and
transmitting, to a given payment network, an authorization request for the given network- based financial transaction that comprises the selected one of the stored primary network-based token or the stored secondary network-based token.
