Abstract

An apparatus, system, and method for a magnetically and releasably attachable trigger for an instrument is provided. Additionally, the trigger provides for an increased sensitivity of sound by being in direct physical contact with the surface on which it is attached.

Claims (14)

1. A system for detecting acoustic vibrations in a musical instrument, the system comprising:

a cymbal comprising a plurality of perforations;

a piezoelectric trigger; and

a trigger mount, the mount comprising a set of fixtures corresponding to one or more of the plurality of perforations, the set of fixtures adapted to receive a set of fasteners for securing the mount and the piezoelectric trigger in physical and mechanical contact with the cymbal;

wherein the set of fixtures comprises at least two extending members, a first retention component and a second retention component, the first and second retention components adapted to be disposed opposite one another on opposite sides of the cymbal with the at least two extending members disposed therebetween when mounted on a cymbal, whereby when affixing the cymbal trigger device to a cymbal the at least two elongated members are disposed through respective ones of the two or more predefined set of perforations, the first and second retention portions being secured relative to the cymbal and trigger device to affix the trigger device to the cymbal;

wherein the piezoelectric trigger, when secured in physical and mechanical contact with the cymbal by the trigger mount, is adapted to convert mechanical vibrations into an electrical signal.

2. The system of claim 1 , further comprising a plastic membrane disposed intermediate the piezoelectric transducer and a striking surface of the cymbal.

3. The system of claim 1 , wherein the piezoelectric trigger comprises a transducer adapted to sense mechanical vibrations experienced on a coupled cymbal and generate an electronic signal representative of sensed mechanical vibrations.

4. The system of claim 1 further comprising an electrical lead connected to the piezoelectric trigger and having an output for delivering the generated electronic signal to a connected device.

The system of claim 1 , wherein the trigger mount comprises a first threaded bolt and nut pair and a second threaded bolt and nut pair adapted to securely affix the transducer to the cymbal to prevent movement of the transducer during operation of the cymbal, the bolt having a portion that provides the first retention portion and the nut providing the second retention portion.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein the trigger mount comprises a housing configured to support the piezoelectric trigger and maintain vibrational communication between the piezoelectric trigger and a surface of the cymbal.

7. The system of claim 6 , wherein the housing further comprises a fastening mechanism receiving portion adapted to align with the two or more predefined set of perforations and to receive and engage with the two elongated members when the cymbal trigger is mounted to a cymbal.

The system of claim 1 further comprising a cable lead mount adapted to be mounted to the cymbal by a fastener engaging the top and bottom surface of the cymbal through a perforation formed in the cymbal and having a lead securing portion for receiving and securing the electrical lead to prevent unwanted movement of the lead relative to the trigger device and cymbal.

9. The system of claim 6 , wherein the housing further comprises a strain relief to prevent disconnection of the electrical lead from the transducer.
