Abstract

Digital content can be broadcast in a sideband of a radio signal transmitted by a broadcast transmitter using digital in-band on-channel (IBOC) transceivers located remotely from the broadcast transmitter. A remotely located IBOC transceiver includes a variable-power IBOC transmitter, a radio receiver, power measurement circuitry and a processor and associated memory. The processor and memory use a measurement taken by the power measurement circuitry to determine the signal strength of the radio signal, and based on that signal strength determine an IBOC transmit power level that will produce a first IBOC signal having an IBOC power not exceeding a predetermined portion of the signal strength of the radio signal. The variable-power IBOC transmitter transmits the first IBOC signal at the IBOC transmit power level, as determined by the processor and memory.

estimating an original power level of the radio signal based on the signal strength of the radio signal at the IBOC transceiver; and

setting the IBOC transmit power level to a value corresponding to an estimated IBOC signal strength that would have been present at the IBOC transceiver if the first IBOC signal had been broadcast from a same location as the broadcast transmitter.

10. The method of claim 8 , wherein:

the first IBOC signal and a second IBOC signal transmitted by another IBOC transceiver overlap each other to form an overlapping area; and

the method further including determining whether the IBOC transmit power level causes a combined IBOC signal strength in the overlapping area, including the first IBOC signal and the second IBOC signal, to exceed the predetermined portion of the signal strength of the radio signal.

11. The method of claim 10 , further including:

providing power feedback to at least one other IBOC transceiver, the power feedback related to the signal strength of the radio signal at the IBOC transceiver.
