Abstract

A method, system, or device to determine when media content has been displayed. The method can include receiving a unique identifier (UID) and fingerprint for a media segment. The method can also include determining a media segment ID for the media segment, generating and submitting a query for the media segment ID in a record database, determining that the media segment ID is not stored in the record database, and identifying an overlay content segment ID. The method can include generating and submitting for the overlay content segment ID in the record database, determining it is not stored in an entry, sending the overlay content segment to the electronic device, and receiving a notification from the electronic device.

a content management system including a processing device and a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium, the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed on the processing device cause the processing device to perform operations including:

receiving information indicating a media content segment to be displayed by the electronic device at a scheduled time;

determining that the media content segment is from the sequence of ordered media content segments;

identifying one or more overlay content segments from the sequence of ordered media content segments wherein at least one of the one or more overlay content segments is to be displayed, by the electronic device, prior to the media content segment;

The system of claim 4 , wherein the operations performed by the processing device further include determining, via the electronic device, a behavior from a viewer while the electronic device displays media content, and the processing device determines the sequence of ordered media content segments according to the viewer response.

8. The system of claim 4 , further comprising an automatic content recognition system configured to identify the media content segment to be displayed by the electronic device, and the processing device receives, from the automatic content recognition system, the information indicating the media content segment to be displayed by the electronic device at the scheduled time.

9. The system of claim 4 , wherein the operations performed by the processing device further include, responsive to the electronic device displaying the first overlay content segment, recording in the record database a new entry that indicates that the electronic device displayed the first overlay content segment.

10. A system for managing content displayed by an electronic device, comprising:

a processing device; and

a non-transitory computer-readable storage medium in communication with the processing device, the non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that when executed on the processing device cause the processing device to perform operations including:

receiving information indicating a media content segment to be displayed by the electronic device at a scheduled time;

determining that the media content segment is from a sequence of ordered media content segments;

identifying an overlay content segment from the sequence of ordered media content segments wherein the overlay content segment is to be displayed, by the electronic device, prior to the media content segment;

determining that a record database does not include an existing entry that indicates that the electronic device has previously displayed the identified overlay content segment;

determining that the record database includes an existing entry that indicates that the electronic device has previously displayed the media content segment; and

responsive to determining that the electronic device has not previously displayed the identified overlay content segment and has previously displayed the media content segment;

erasing any existing entries in the record database indicating that the electronic device has previously displayed any of the sequence of media content segments; and

causing the electronic device to display, at the scheduled time in place of the media content segment, a first overlay content segment to start over the sequence of ordered media content segments.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the media content segment is a n th media content segment in the sequence of ordered media content segments, wherein first through (n−1) th media content segments in the sequence of ordered media content segments are to be displayed, by the electronic device, in order and prior to the n th media content segment,
