Abstract

A processing device can execute instructions to query a database to determine a top-ranked avail for a target audience, to generate a target avail, determine the target avail is not within a sell CPM price for the target audience, and determine that demand for the target avail as addressable television (ATV) impressions is beyond a predetermined threshold sufficient to discount the CPM price of the target avail for the target audience. The ATV impressions can be derived from directly addressable replacement ads. The processing device can further determine that the target avail is within the sell CPM price for the target audience with a determined discount and discount the sell CPM price for the target avail by the determined discount that decreases a margin for an ad campaign when filling the target avail with a broadcast ad. Also, ATV sell CPM price can be adjusted according to programmable TV campaign performance.

Claims (66)

1. A method performed by a programmatic television (PTV) system, comprising:

receiving, from a demand side platform (DSP), a request for a media plan, the request specifying a budget, a sell cost-per-mille (CPM) price threshold, and a target audience;

querying a data storage system for a highest indexed advertisement (ad) spot available for the target audience, the ad spot having a sell CPM price for the DSP;

determining whether the sell CPM price satisfies the sell CPM price threshold;

responsive to determining that the sell CPM price does not satisfy the sell CPM price threshold, determining whether there is sufficient demand for the ad spot from a projected number of addressable television (ATV) impressions to apply a discount to the sell CPM price;

responsive to determining there is insufficient demand for the ad spot from the projected number of ATV impressions, maintaining the sell CPM price for the ad spot;

responsive to determining that there is sufficient demand for the ad spot from the projected number of ATV impressions, determining whether the sell CPM price with the discount satisfies the sell CPM price threshold; and

responsive to determining that the sell CPM price with the discount satisfies the sell CPM price threshold:

applying the discount to the sell CPM price threshold to produce a discounted sell CPM price;

determining whether a forecast of the projected number of the ATV impressions multiplied by the discounted sell CPM price is within the budget;

responsive to determining that the forecast of the projected number of the ATV impressions multiplied by the discounted sell CPM price is within the budget, adding the ad spot to the media plan; and

sending the media plan including at least the ad spot to the DSP.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the ad spot has a buy CPM price for the PTV system, and the method further comprises determining whether the buy CPM price satisfies a predetermined buy CPM price threshold.

3. The method of claim 2 , wherein the predetermined buy CPM price threshold is based on a buy CPM price accepted by a seller of the ad spot for a given percentage of time over a previous period.

4. The method of claim 2 , wherein the ad spot is added to the media plan further in response to determining that the buy CPM price satisfies the predetermined buy CPM price threshold.

5. The method of claim 2 , further comprising:

responsive to determining that the buy CPM price does not satisfy the predetermined buy CPM price threshold, increasing the buy CPM price to produce an increased buy CPM price; and

determining whether a difference between the increased buy CPM price and the discounted sell CPM price satisfies a predetermined margin,

wherein the ad spot is added to the media plan further in response to determining that the difference between the increased buy CPM price and the discounted sell CPM price satisfies the predetermined margin.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, prior to sending the media plan to the DSP:

determining whether there is a remaining budget based on reducing the budget by the forecast; and

responsive to determining that there is a remaining budget, processing another ad spot for addition to the media plan.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether there is sufficient demand for the ad spot to apply a discount to the sell CPM price includes:

determining whether the projected number of ATV impressions satisfies a predetermined impression threshold.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the forecast is based further on monitoring of real-time performance of an associated ad campaign.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether there is sufficient demand for the ad spot to apply a discount to the sell CPM price includes at least one of:

evaluating an average CPM price demanded for a day part and a network associated with the ad spot,

evaluating average success rate of ad spot sales for the day part and the network associated with the ad spot,

evaluating a number of addressable devices for presenting the ad spot at the associated day part and on the associated network, or

evaluating an expected audience waste for the day part and the network associated with the ad spot.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

responsive to determining that there is not sufficient demand for the ad spot or determining that the discounted sell CPM price does not satisfy the sell CPM price threshold, processing another ad spot for addition to the media plan.

11. A programmatic television (PTV) system, comprising:

a processing device; and

memory hardware in communication with the processing device, the memory device storing instructions that when executed on the processing device causes the processing device to perform operations comprising:

receiving, from a demand side platform (DSP), a request for a media plan, the request specifying a budget, a sell cost-per-mille (CPM) price threshold, and a target audience;

querying a data storage system for a highest indexed advertisement (ad) spot for the target audience, the ad spot having a sell CPM price for the DSP;

determining whether the sell CPM price satisfies the sell CPM price threshold;

responsive to determining that the sell CPM price does not satisfy the sell CPM price threshold, determining whether there is sufficient demand for the ad spot from a projected number of addressable television (ATV) impressions to apply a discount to the sell CPM price;

responsive to determining there is insufficient demand for the ad spot from the projected number of ATV impressions, maintaining the sell CPM price for the ad spot;

responsive to determining that there is sufficient demand for the ad spot from the projected number of ATV impressions, determining whether the sell CPM price with the discount satisfies the sell CPM price threshold; and

responsive to determining that the sell CPM price with the discount satisfies the sell CPM price threshold:

applying the discount to the sell CPM price threshold to produce a discounted sell CPM price;

determining whether a forecast of the projected number of ATV impressions multiplied by the discounted sell CPM price is within the budget;

responsive to determining that the forecast of the projected number of ATV impressions multiplied by the discounted sell CPM price is within the budget, adding the ad spot to the media plan; and

sending the media plan including at least the ad spot to the DSP.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the ad spot has a buy CPM price for the PTV system, and the operations further comprise determining whether the buy CPM price satisfies a predetermined buy CPM price threshold.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the predetermined buy CPM price threshold is based on a buy CPM price accepted by a seller of the ad spot for a given percentage of time over a previous period.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the ad spot is added to the media plan further in response to determining that the buy CPM price satisfies the predetermined buy CPM price threshold.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein the operations further comprise:

responsive to determining that the buy CPM price does not satisfy the predetermined buy CPM price threshold, increasing the buy CPM price to produce an increased buy CPM price; and

determining whether a difference between the increased buy CPM price and the discounted sell CPM price satisfies a predetermined margin,

wherein the ad spot is added to the media plan further in response to determining that the difference between the increased buy CPM price and the discounted sell CPM price satisfies the predetermined margin.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the operations further comprise, prior to sending the media plan to the DSP:

determining whether there is a remaining budget based on reducing the budget by the forecast; and

responsive to determining that there is a remaining budget, processing another ad spot for addition to the media plan.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining whether there is sufficient demand for the ad spot to apply a discount to the sell CPM price includes:

determining whether the projected number of impressions satisfies a predetermined impression threshold.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the forecast is based further on monitoring of real-time performance of an associated ad campaign.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein determining whether there is sufficient demand for the ad spot to apply a discount to the sell CPM price includes at least one of:

evaluating an average CPM price demanded for a day part and a network associated with the ad spot,
