Abstract

A media system replaces content in a first sequence of media content. The media system presents the first sequence of media content to an end-user and generates a fingerprint of the sequence of media content. The fingerprint is for comparison with a plurality of reference fingerprints so as to identify the first sequence of media content and determine a reference position within the first sequence of media content. The media system sends a request for a replacement sequence of content to a content replacement system, and receives replacement media content selected based on the identified first sequence of media content. The media system presents the replacement media content to the end-user instead of the first sequence of media content. Presenting the replacement media content begins at a position in the first sequence of media content that is determined based on the reference position.

Claims (36)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a computing system, a sequence of media content that includes interstitial advertisements;

receiving, at the computing system, control data that includes timing information of when in the sequence of media content at least one replacement advertisement should be presented in place of at least one of the interstitial advertisements;

steganographically embedding, by the computing system, the control data into the sequence of media content, wherein steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content comprises adjusting chrominance of a pixel of the sequence of media content; and

distributing, by the computing system, the sequence of media content having the steganographically embedded control data to client devices that are configured to (i) present the sequence of media content, (ii) detect in the sequence of media content the steganographically embedded control data, and (iii) determine, from the detected steganographically embedded control data, the timing information of when in the sequence of media content the at least one replacement advertisement should be presented, and (iv) cause the at least one replacement advertisement to be presented in accordance with the determined timing, in place of content of the sequence of media content.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the computing system is at a content distributor, wherein receiving the sequence of media content comprises receiving the sequence of media content from a content provider, and wherein receiving the control data comprises receiving the control data from a content replacement system.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sequence of media content includes a television show with the interstitial advertisements.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the timing information comprises a frame count useable by the client devices to determine when to switch from presenting the sequence of media content to presenting the at least one replacement advertisement.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the timing information comprises an advertisement duration.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the control data further includes original-advertisement data useable to facilitate determination of the at least one replacement advertisement to be presented in place of content of the sequence of media content,

wherein the original-advertisement data comprises at least one of an advertisement identifier or an advertisement campaign identifier for the at least one interstitial advertisement that the at least one replacement advertisement would replace.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the steganographically embedded control data is encrypted.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content comprises steganographically embedding the control data inside of a transport layer.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content comprises encoding the control data as a watermark into the sequence of media content.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising identifying by the computing system transition points in the sequence of media content.

11. A computing system comprising:

one or more processors;

memory; and

instructions stored in the memory and executable by the one or more processors to cause the computing system to carry out operations including:

receiving a sequence of media content that includes interstitial advertisements,

receiving control data that includes timing information of when in the sequence of media content at least one replacement advertisement should be presented in place of at least one of the interstitial advertisements,

steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content wherein steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content comprises adjusting chrominance of a pixel of the sequence of media content, and

outputting the sequence of media content having the steganographically embedded control data, for distribution to client devices that are configured to (i) present the sequence of media content, (ii) detect in the sequence of media content the steganographically embedded control data, and (iii) determine, from the detected steganographically embedded control data, the timing information of when in the sequence of media content the at least one replacement advertisement should be presented, and (iv) cause the at least one replacement advertisement to be presented in accordance with the determined timing, in place of content of the sequence of media content.

12. The computing system of claim 11 , wherein the computing system is at a content distributor, wherein receiving the sequence of media content comprises receiving the sequence of media content from a content provider, and wherein receiving the control data comprises receiving the control data from a content replacement system.

13. The computing system of claim 11 , wherein the timing information comprises a frame count useable by the client devices to determine when to switch from presenting the sequence of media content to presenting the at least one replacement advertisement.

14. The computing system of claim 11 , wherein the control data further includes original-advertisement data useable to facilitate determination of the at least one replacement advertisement to be presented in place of content of the sequence of media content,

wherein the original-advertisement data comprises at least one of an advertisement identifier or an advertisement campaign identifier for the at least one interstitial advertisement that the at least one replacement advertisement would replace.

15. The computing system of claim 11 , wherein steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content comprises encoding the control data as a watermark into the sequence of media content.

16. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing instructions that, when executed by one or more processors of a computing system, cause the computing system to carry out operations comprising:

receiving a sequence of media content that includes interstitial advertisements,

receiving control data that includes timing information of when in the sequence of media content at least one replacement advertisement should be presented in place of at least one of the interstitial advertisements,

steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content wherein steganographically embedding the control data into the sequence of media content comprises adjusting chrominance of a pixel of the sequence of media content, and

outputting the sequence of media content having the steganographically embedded control data, for distribution to client devices that are configured to (i) present the sequence of media content, (ii) detect in the sequence of media content the steganographically embedded control data, and (iii) determine, from the detected steganographically embedded control data, the timing information of when in the sequence of media content the at least one replacement advertisement should be presented, and (iv) cause the at least one replacement advertisement to be presented in accordance with the determined timing, in place of content of the sequence of media content.

17. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the timing information comprises a frame count useable by the client devices to determine when to switch from presenting the sequence of media content to presenting the at least one replacement advertisement.

18. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 16 , wherein the control data further includes original-advertisement data useable to facilitate determination of the at least one replacement advertisement to be presented in place of content of the sequence of media content,

wherein the original-advertisement data comprises at least one of an advertisement identifier or an advertisement campaign identifier for the at least one interstitial advertisement that the at least one replacement advertisement would replace.
