Abstract

A router fabric for switching real time broadcast video signals in a media processing network includes a logic device configured to route multiple channels of packetized video signals to another network device, a crossbar switch configured to be coupled to a plurality of input/output components and to switch video data of the multiple channels between the logic device and the plurality of input/output components in response to a control instruction, and a controller configured to map routing addresses for each video signal relative to the system clock, and to send the control instruction with the mapping to the crossbar switch and the logic device.

Claims (52)

1. A routing system for routing IP data packets in a media distribution network comprising:

a router configured to receive an IP data packet from an input source, determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with a time frame of a system clock, and route the received IP data packet to an output component of a media distribution network when the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock; and

a media processing node that includes a gateway configured to receive the IP data packet and pass the IP data packet to a crossbar switch for switching and routing within the router the IP data packet in an unaltered IP format,

wherein the router is configured to determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock by unwrapping the IP data packet from a data stream, locating a frame marker, and comparing a packet payload period to a system clock frame interval, and

wherein the router is configured to determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock when a packet payload does not occur across two system clock frames.

2. The routing system of claim 1 , wherein the router is further configured to determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock when a phase offset between the packet payload period and the system clock frame exists.

The routing system of claim 1 , wherein the router is configured to determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock by unwrapping the IP data packet from an IP packetized video data stream, locating a video frame marker, and comparing the packet payload period to the system clock frame interval.

4. The routing system of claim 1 , wherein the router is configured to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet to the output component of the media distribution network when the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 1 , further comprising a media routing controller configured to control the router to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet to the output component of the media distribution network when the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

6. The routing system of claim 1 , further comprising a logic device that is coupled between the router and the output component and configured to transmit the received IP data packet to at least one of a distribution node and an asynchronous IP router.

The routing system of claim 6 , wherein the logic device further comprises a data buffer configured to sample the received IP data packet from the router at a first rate and upsample the sampled and received IP data packet to the output component at a second rate greater than the first rate to isochronously route the received IP data packet during media content distribution by the output component.

The routing system of claim 7 , wherein the logic device is further configured to provision bandwidth of a channel carrying data at a first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet is being transported to the distribution node and reprovision bandwidth of the channel carrying the data at a second level of bandwidth capacity less than the first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet is transported to the asynchronous IP router.

9. The routing system of claim 1 , wherein the gateway is configured to receive the IP data packet and pass the IP data packet without decompressing the data stream, such that the IP data packet is switched and routed within the router in the unaltered IP format.

10. A routing system for routing IP data packets in a media distribution network comprising:

a router fabric configured to receive an IP data packet from an input source, determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with a time frame of a system clock, and route the received IP data packet to an output component of a media distribution network when the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock; and

wherein the router fabric comprises a media processing node that includes a gateway configured to receive the IP data packet and pass the IP data packet to a crossbar switch for switching and routing within the router fabric the IP data packet in an unaltered IP format.

The routing system of claim 10 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock by unwrapping the IP data packet from an IP packetized video data stream, locating a video frame marker, and comparing a packet payload period to a system clock frame interval.

12. The routing system of claim 11 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock when the packet payload does not occur across two system clock frames.

13. The routing system of claim 11 , wherein the received IP data packet comprises a plurality of IP data packet segments.

14. The routing system of claim 11 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock when a phase offset between the packet payload period and the system clock frame exists.

15. The routing system of claim 11 , wherein the router fabric is configured to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet to the output component of the media distribution network when the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 11 , further comprising a media routing controller configured to control the router fabric to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet to the output component of the media distribution network when the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 11 , further comprising a media routing controller configured to control the router fabric to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet to the output component of the media distribution network when the received IP data packet is vertically aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

18. The routing system of claim 11 , further comprising a logic device that is coupled between the router fabric and the output component and configured to transmit the received IP data packet to a distribution node or an asynchronous IP router.

The routing system of claim 18 , wherein the logic device further comprises a data buffer configured to sample the received IP data packet from the router fabric at a first rate and upsample the sampled the received IP data packet to the output component at a second rate greater than the first rate to isochronously route the received IP data packet during media content distribution by the output component.

The routing system of claim 18 , wherein the logic device is further configured to provision bandwidth of a channel carrying data at a first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet are being transported to the distribution node and reprovision bandwidth of the channel carrying the data at a second level of bandwidth capacity less than the first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet are transported to the asynchronous IP router.

21. The routing system of claim 10 , wherein the gateway is configured to receive the IP data packet and pass the IP data packet without decompressing the IP data packet, such that the IP data packet is switched and routed within the router fabric in the unaltered IP format.

22. A routing system for routing IP data packets in a media distribution network comprising:

a router fabric configured to receive an IP data packet stream from an input source, the IP data packet stream including a data packet;

wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is aligned with a time frame of a system clock; and

wherein the router fabric is also configured to route the received IP data packet stream to an output component of a media distribution network when the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric comprises a media processing node that includes a gateway configured to receive the IP data packet stream and pass the received IP data packet stream to a crossbar switch for switching and routing within the router fabric the IP data packet stream in an unaltered IP format when the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

24. The routing system of claim 23 , wherein the gateway is configured to receive the IP data packet and pass the IP data packet without decompressing the IP data packet stream, such that the IP data packet is switched and routed within the router fabric in the unaltered IP format.

The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is aligned with the time frame of the system clock by unwrapping the data packet from the IP data packet stream, locating a video frame marker, and comparing a packet payload period to a system clock frame interval.

26. The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the received IP data packet stream is aligned with the time frame of the system clock when a packet payload does not occur across two system clock frames.

27. The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is aligned with the time frame of the system clock when a phase offset between a packet payload period and the system clock frame exists.

The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is vertically aligned with the time frame of the system clock, and route the received IP data packet to the output component of the media distribution network when the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is vertically aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric is configured to align the data packet in the received IP data packet stream with the time frame of the system clock when the router fabric determines that the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is not aligned with a time frame of a system clock so as to route the received IP data packet stream to an output component of a media distribution network when the data packet it the received IP data packet stream is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric is configured to determine whether the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is vertically aligned with the time frame of the system clock, and vertically align the data packet in the received IP data packet stream with the time frame of the system clock when the router fabric determines that the data packet in the received IP data packet is not vertically aligned with a time frame of a system clock so as to route the received IP data packet stream to an output component of a media distribution network when the data packet in the received IP data packet is vertically aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 22 , further comprising a media routing controller configured to control the router fabric to route the received IP data packet stream according to the system clock such that the router fabric is configured to switch without a glitch the received IP data packet stream to the output component of the media distribution network when the data packet in the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

32. The routing system of claim 31 , wherein the router fabric is configured to switch without a glitch comprises switching the received IP data packet stream to the output component without dropping a packet.

33. The routing system of claim 22 , further comprising a logic device that is coupled between the router fabric and the output component and configured to transmit the received IP data packet stream to at least one of a distribution node and an asynchronous IP router.

The routing system of claim 33 , wherein the logic device further comprises a data buffer configured to sample the received IP data packet stream from the router fabric at a first rate and up-sample the sampled IP data packet stream to the output component at a second rate greater than the first rate to isochronously route the received IP data packet stream during media content distribution by the at least one output.

35. The routing system of claim 34 , wherein, by up-sampling the received IP data packet stream to the output component, the logic device time division multiplexes (TDM) the received IP data packet stream so as to transmit a resulting TDM signal to a distribution node and an asynchronous IP router.

36. The routing system of claim 35 , wherein the logic device is further configured to provision bandwidth of a channel carrying data at a first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet stream is being transported to the distribution node and re-provision bandwidth of a channel carrying the data at a second level of bandwidth capacity less than the first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet stream is being transported to the asynchronous IP router.

The routing system of claim 22 , wherein the router fabric is configured to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet stream to the output component of the media distribution network when the data packet of the received IP data packet is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 22 , further comprising a media routing controller configured to control the router fabric to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet stream to the output component of the media distribution network when the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

The routing system of claim 22 , further comprising a media routing controller configured to control the router fabric to switch without any glitches the received IP data packet stream to the output component of the media distribution network when the data packet in the received IP data packet stream is vertically aligned with the time frame of the system clock.

40. The routing system of claim 22 , further comprising a logic device that is coupled between the router fabric and the output component and configured to transmit the received IP data packet stream to a distribution node.

41. The routing system of claim 22 , further comprising a logic device that is coupled between the router fabric and the output component and configured to transmit the received IP data packet stream to an asynchronous IP router.

The routing system of claim 33 , wherein the logic device further comprises a data buffer configured to sample the received IP data packet stream from the router fabric at a first rate and up-sample the sampled IP data packet stream to the output component at a second rate greater than the first rate to isochronously route the received IP data packet stream during media content distribution by the output component.

The routing system of claim 33 , wherein the logic device is further configured to provision bandwidth of a channel carrying data at a first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet stream are being transported to the distribution node and re-provision bandwidth of the channel carrying the data at a second level of bandwidth capacity less than the first level of bandwidth capacity when the received IP data packet stream are transported to the asynchronous IP router.
