Abstract

A light source device includes first and second light source units, a first polarization beam splitter, and a polarization conversion element. The first light source unit emits first linear polarization light in a first direction. The second light source unit is disposed facing the first light source unit, and emits the first linear polarization light in a second direction opposite to the first direction. The first linear polarization light emitted from the first light source unit is reflected by the first polarization beam splitter in a third direction perpendicular to the first and second directions. The first linear polarization light emitted from the second light source unit is reflected by the first polarization beam splitter in a fourth direction opposite to the third direction, is converted into the second linear polarization light by the polarization conversion element, and is reflected in the third direction.

Claims (19)

1. A light source device comprising:

a first light source unit that emits first linear polarization light in a first direction;

a second light source unit that is disposed facing the first light source unit, and emits the first linear polarization light in a second direction opposite to the first direction;

a first polarization beam splitter that is disposed between the first light source unit and the second light source unit, reflects the first linear polarization light, and transmits second linear polarization light of which polarization direction is perpendicular to the first linear polarization light; and

a polarization conversion element configured with a transparent substrate having one surface with a ¼ wavelength coat and another surface with a reflective coat,

wherein the first linear polarization light emitted from the first light source unit is reflected by the first polarization beam splitter in a third direction perpendicular to the first and second directions, and

the first linear polarization light emitted from the second light source unit is reflected by the first polarization beam splitter in a fourth direction opposite to the third direction, is converted into the second linear polarization light by the polarization conversion element, and is reflected in the third direction.

2. The light source device according to claim 1 , further comprising a third light source unit that emits the second linear polarization light in the third direction,

wherein the first polarization beam splitter includes an opening through which the second linear polarization light from the third light source unit passes.

3. The light source device according to claim 1 , further comprising a retardation plate that is disposed at an emission port of the light source device, the retardation plate being configured with a transparent substrate having an opening through which the second linear polarization light passes and one surface with a ½ wavelength coat.

4. The light source device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a third light source unit that emits the first linear polarization light in the first direction;

a fourth light source unit that is disposed facing the third light source unit, and emits the first linear polarization light in the second direction; and

a second polarization beam splitter that is disposed between the third light source unit and the fourth light source unit, includes a second opening for light transmission, reflects the first linear polarization light, and transmits the second linear polarization light,

wherein the first polarization beam splitter includes a first opening for light transmission,

the first linear polarization light emitted from the second light source unit is reflected by the first polarization beam splitter in the fourth direction, passes through the second opening of the second polarization beam splitter, is converted into the second linear polarization light by the polarization conversion element, and is reflected in the third direction,

the first linear polarization light emitted from the third light source unit is reflected by the second polarization beam splitter in the third direction, and passes through the first opening of the first polarization beam splitter, and

the first linear polarization light emitted from the fourth light source unit is reflected by the second polarization beam splitter in the fourth direction, is converted into the second linear polarization light by the polarization conversion element, and is reflected in the third direction.

5. A projection display apparatus comprising the light source device according to claim 1 .
