Abstract

The present disclosure relates to a method of generating visual percepts using conformal electrode arrays. The electrode arrays can be placed into the ventricular system or cerebral venous sinuses, which function as minimally invasive techniques for precise spatial and temporal localization of electrical activity within the brain, and precise electrical stimulation of brain tissue, to diagnose and restore function in conditions caused by abnormal electrical activity in the brain. The disclosure further comprises a system for using these arrays to generate time-varying electric fields to stimulate the visual pathways of the brain, including the optic radiations and the occipital cortex, in ways that lead to visual perception.

Claims (15)

1. A method of electrically stimulating or recording from portions of a brain that relate to vision using an endovascular electrode array within a venous sinus proximate to a visual cortex, the method comprising:

determining a portion of the visual cortex for electrical stimulation;

accessing previously stored registration information regarding a location of the endovascular electrode array within the venous sinus;

selecting one or more electrodes in the endovascular electrode array based on the registration information; and

electrically stimulating or recording from the determined portion of visual cortex with the selected electrodes.

2. The method of claim 1 , comprising forming an electrical field distributed in a three-dimensional space using the selected electrodes.

3. The method of claim 1 , comprising localizing electrical activity in the brain using the selected electrode distributed in a three-dimensional space.

4. The method of claim 1 , comprising registering the endovascular electrode array to obtain its orientation and position within the venous sinus.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein registering comprises neuroimaging.

6. The method of claim 1 , comprising inserting the endovascular electrode array into the venous sinus via a minimally invasive insertion technique.

7. The method of claim 1 , comprising inserting the endovascular electrode into the venous sinus via a cannula or catheter.

8. The method of claim 1 , comprising receiving visual images from an external imaging system in electrical communication with the plurality of electrodes.

9. The method of claim 1 , comprising receiving visual images from an external imaging device mounted on the eye of a user, a glass, or a goggle.

10. The method of claim 1 , comprising providing an image having a high pixel count of at least 10,000 pixels to approximate, restore, or augment normal human vision.

11. The method of claim 1 , comprising inserting the endovascular electrode array into the venous sinus so that the endovascular electrode array is disposed in a three-dimensional configuration.
