Abstract

According to one embodiment of the invention, systems and methods are provided for power management for wireless multicast communication. For example, a method for an access point includes receiving a request message from a wireless device, the request message identifying a multicast group of the access point and a desired power-save characteristic of the wireless device; and transmitting an accept message to the wireless device, the accept message accepting the desired power-save characteristic.

Claims (36)

1. An access point comprising:

a hardware processor; and

a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium encoded with instructions executable by the hardware processor to perform operations comprising:

receiving a request message from a wireless device, the request message identifying a multicast group of the access point and a desired power-save characteristic of the wireless device, and

transmitting an accept message to the wireless device, the accept message accepting the desired power-save characteristic.

2. The access point of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the wireless device in the multicast group.

3. The access point of claim 1 , wherein the desired power-save characteristic comprises a desired delivery interval.

4. The access point of claim 3 , wherein the desired delivery interval is a multiple of a beacon interval of the access point.

5. The access point of claim 3 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the wireless device only according to the desired delivery interval.

6. The access point of claim 1 , wherein the request message includes a request to join the multicast group.

7. The access point of claim 1 , wherein the wireless device is a member of the multicast group.

8. A wireless device comprising:

a hardware processor; and

a non-transitory machine-readable storage medium encoded with instructions executable by the hardware processor to perform operations comprising:

transmitting a request message to an access point, the request message identifying a multicast group of the access point and a desired power-save characteristic of the wireless device, and

receiving an accept message from the access point, the accept message accepting the desired power-save characteristic.

9. The wireless device of claim 8 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the access point in the multicast group.

10. The wireless device of claim 8 , wherein the desired power-save characteristic comprises a desired delivery interval.

11. The wireless device of claim 10 , wherein the desired delivery interval is a multiple of a beacon interval of the access point.

12. The wireless device of claim 10 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the access point only according to the desired delivery interval.

13. The wireless device of claim 8 , wherein the request message includes a request to join the multicast group.

14. The wireless device of claim 8 , wherein the wireless device is a member of the multicast group.

15. A method for an access point, comprising:

receiving a request message from a wireless device, the request message identifying a multicast group of the access point and a desired power-save characteristic of the wireless device; and

transmitting an accept message to the wireless device, the accept message accepting the desired power-save characteristic.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the wireless device in the multicast group.

17. The method of claim 15 , wherein the desired power-save characteristic comprises a desired delivery interval.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the desired delivery interval is a multiple of a beacon interval of the access point.

19. The method of claim 17 , wherein the operations further comprise:

communicating with the wireless device only according to the desired delivery interval.

20. The method of claim 15 , wherein the request message includes a request to join the multicast group.
