Abstract

Compositions and methods for the disinfection of surfaces are provided. The compositions include a C 1-6 alcohol, a primary enhancer, and an acidifying agent. The disinfectant composition is characterized by a pH of less than 3. Broad spectrum efficacy is achieved, and synergistic activity is exhibited against C. difficile spores.

Claims (28)

1. A composition for the disinfection of surfaces, the composition comprising:

at least 40 wt. % of a C 1-6 alcohol, based upon the total weight of the composition;

at least one primary enhancer; and

an acidifying agent,

wherein the composition has a pH of less than 3.

2. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the acidifying agent comprises a mineral acid.

3. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the acidifying agent is selected from the group consisting of a mineral acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, amino acids, or combinations thereof.

4. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the acidifying agent comprises phosphoric acid.

5. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one primary enhancer comprises from 0.1 to 20 wt. %, based upon the total weight of the composition.

6. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one primary enhancer is selected from the group consisting of amine-containing enhancers, α-aminoacids, salts of alkali metals, salts of alkaline earth metals, and anionic surfactants.

7. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the at least one primary enhancer is selected from the group consisting of ammonium chloride, ammonium iron citrate, calcium chloride, iron perchlorate, lithium perchlorate, lithium acetate, magnesium chloride, sodium chlorate, sodium chloride, sodium chlorite, 2-amino-2-hydroxy methyl-propane-1,3-diol hydrochloride, and combinations thereof.

8. The composition of claim 7 , wherein the at least one primary enhancer is ammonium chloride.

9. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the C 1-6 alcohol is selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, propanol, butanol, pentanol, hexanol, and isomers and mixtures thereof.

10. The composition of claim 1 , further comprising at least one secondary enhancer.

11. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the pH of the composition is less than 2.75.

12. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the pH of the composition is less than 2.

13. The composition of claim 1 , wherein the pH of the composition is less than 1.5.

14. A composition for the inactivation of C. difficile spores on surfaces, the composition comprising:

at least 40 wt. % of a C 1-6 alcohol, based upon the total weight of the composition;

from 0.1 to 20 wt. % of at least one primary enhancer selected from the group consisting of amine-containing enhancers, α-aminoacids, salts of alkali metals, salts of alkaline earth metals, and anionic surfactants, based upon the total weight of the composition; and

an acidifying agent,

wherein the composition has a pH of less than 3.

15. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the acidifying agent comprises a mineral acid.

16. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the acidifying agent is selected from the group consisting of a mineral acid, hydrochloric acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid, amino acids, or combinations thereof.

17. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the at least one primary enhancer is selected from the group consisting of ammonium chloride, ammonium iron citrate, calcium chloride, iron perchlorate, lithium perchlorate, lithium acetate, magnesium chloride, sodium chlorate, sodium chloride, sodium chlorite, 2-amino-2-hydroxy methyl-propane-1,3-diol hydrochloride, and combinations thereof.

18. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the composition has a pH of less than 2.75.

19. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the composition has a pH of less than 2.

20. The composition of claim 14 , wherein the composition comprises at least 70 wt. % of the C 1-6 alcohol, based upon the total weight of the composition.
