Abstract

An A-frame-shaped truss foundation system for a single-axis tracker with a bearing assembly sitting atop a pair of adjacent angled truss legs joined together with an adapter so that the axis of rotation of the tracker is aligned with a work point of the A-frame. Several such foundation systems are arranged along a North-South row to support a tracker torque tube.

Claims (28)

1. A foundation system for a single-axis tracker comprising:

a pair of adjacent legs extending below and above ground, each leg comprising a screw anchor portion and an upper portion that are joined together to define a substantially common axis

an adapter having at least one bearing support portion and a pair of connecting portions spaced apart and oriented at opposing angles that join the pair of legs to form an A-frame-shaped truss so that the common axes intersect at a work point of the truss; and

a bearing assembly supported by the at least one bearing support portion, the bearing assembly providing a bearing that receives a rotating member that passes through the work point.

2. The foundation system according to claim 1 , wherein the bearing assembly is part of the adapter.

3. The foundation system according to claim 1 , wherein the bearing assembly is attached to the adapter.

4. The foundation system according to claim 1 , further comprising a torque tube seated in the bearing.

5. The foundation system according to claim 1 , wherein the pair of connecting portions are oriented at respective opposing angles and spaced apart to join the pair of adjacent legs so that they are separated by an angle in a range of more than 35-degrees up to 70-degrees.

6. The foundation system according to claim 5 , wherein the connecting portions are oriented to join the pair of adjacent legs by an angle in a range of 50 to 60-degrees.

7. The foundation system according to claim 1 , further comprising a bearing pin seated in the bearing, wherein a torque tube hangs from and rotates about the bearing pin.

8. A truss foundation adapter for a single-axis tracker comprising:

a main body portion;

at least one bearing support portion; and

a pair of connecting portions extending away from the main body portion, wherein the connecting portions are positioned and angled apart from one another so that a line through a center of mass of respective adjacent truss legs intersects an axis of rotation of the tracker when the connecting portions are connected to the respective adjacent truss legs.

9. The adapter according to claim 8 , wherein the adapter includes a bearing that surrounds the axis of rotation.

10. The adapter according to claim 8 , further comprising a bearing assembly attached to the at least one bearing support portion, wherein the bearing assembly includes a bearing that surrounds the axis of rotation.

11. The adapter according to claim 10 , wherein the bearing receives a tracker torque tube.

12. The adapter according to claim 10 , wherein the bearing receives a bearing pin and a torque tube hangs from and rotates about the bearing pin.

13. The adapter according to claim 8 , wherein the pair of connecting portions are angled apart from one another by an angle in a range of more than 35-degrees up to 70-degrees.

14. The adapter according to claim 13 , wherein the pair of connecting portions are angled apart from one another by an angle in the range of 50-degrees to 60-degrees.

15. A truss foundation kit for a single-axis tracker comprising:

a pair of hollow elongated truss legs, each leg comprising a screw anchor and an upper portion attachable together to form a substantially common axis; and

an adapter, the adapter having a pair of connecting portions extending away from each other and angled apart from one another so that an imaginary line through the center of mass of each truss leg intersects an axis of rotation of the single-axis tracker when the legs are coupled to the connecting portions.

16. The foundation kit according to claim 15 , further comprising a bearing assembly, the bearing assembly having a bearing that receives a rotating member that comprises the axis of rotation.

17. The foundation kit according to claim 16 , wherein the bearing assembly is part of the adapter.

18. The foundation kit according to claim 16 , wherein the rotating member is a tracker torque tube.

19. The foundation kit according to claim 16 , wherein the rotating member is a bearing pin and a torque tube hangs from and rotates about the bearing pin.

20. The foundation kit according to claim 16 , wherein the connecting portions are angled apart from one another by an angle in a range of more than 35-degrees up to 70-degrees.
