Abstract

A ferrofluid chamber has a housing that is adapted to be coupled to a component that generates a magnetic field. The housing may be disposed around the component so as to insulate a noise-producing region of the component. The magnetic field may be of sufficient strength to stimulate anatomical tissue. In addition, a ferrofluid may be disposed within the housing for cooling the component.

Claims (22)

1. A magnetic stimulation system comprising:

a coil configured to generate a magnetic field to stimulate at least a portion of a brain of a human subject as part of a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) procedure; and

a chamber coupled to the coil and surrounding at least a portion of the coil;

wherein at least a portion of the chamber comprises a sound absorber, the sound absorber being configured to reduce noise produced by the coil, and wherein the coil and the chamber are disposed within a housing configured to conform to a head of the human subject.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sound absorber is a passive sound absorber.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the sound absorber comprises a sound-absorbing material.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the sound absorber is an active sound absorber.

5. The system of claim 4 , wherein the sound absorber comprises active noise-reduction equipment.

6. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a ferrofluid disposed in the chamber, wherein the magnetic stimulation system is configured to magnetically induce convection of the ferrofluid in the chamber.

7. The system of claim 1 , further comprising:

a ferrofluid disposed in the chamber, wherein the ferrofluid is configured to reduce a temperature of the coil during the TMS procedure.

8. A magnetic stimulation system comprising:

a coil for generating a magnetic field to stimulate at least a portion of a brain of a human subject as part of a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) procedure;

a chamber coupled to the coil and surrounding at least a portion of the coil; and

a sound absorber disposed around the chamber, the sound absorber being configured to reduce noise produced by the coil, and wherein the sound absorber, the coil, and the chamber are disposed within a housing configured to conform to a head of the human subject.

9. The system of claim 8 , further comprising a heat exchanger coupled to the chamber.

10. The system of claim 9 , further comprising:

a ferrofluid disposed in the chamber, wherein the heat exchanger is configured to cool the ferrofluid.

11. The system of claim 9 , wherein the heat exchanger is a heat sink.

12. The system of claim 8 , further comprising:

a ferrofluid disposed in the chamber, wherein the ferrofluid is configured to reduce a temperature of the coil during the TMS procedure.
