Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for adapting communication parameters to a variety of link conditions, traffic types and priorities. For example, WiFi transmission parameters (e.g. retry limit, AIFS, CW size, MCS order and/or CCA threshold) may be adapted to channel congestion levels, channel errors and/or traffic priority levels. Parameter adaptation may be coordinated across layers (e.g. between MAC and PHY layer parameters). Congestion levels may be detected, for example, using a smoothed queue size and/or channel busy time. Traffic may be transmitted using adapted parameters, such as reduced retry limits for a high congestion level and increased retry limits for priority traffic in response to channel error. Feedback may support parameter adaptation. For example, feedback may be provided by a receiver and/or within a sender, such as a sender MAC and/or PHY layer or a parameter adapter providing feedback (e.g. spoofed NACK packet) to a sender application, transport and/or network layer.

Claims (22)

1. A communication device comprising:

a memory; and

a processor configured to:

determine a congestion level associated with a communication channel;

determine a priority level associated with a packet to be transmitted on the communication channel, wherein the priority level is determined based on a traffic classification associated with the packet;

jointly adapt a PHY layer transmission parameter and a MAC layer transmission parameter based on the determined congestion level and the determined priority level; and

transmit the packet using the jointly adapted MAC layer transmission parameter at a MAC layer of the communication device and the jointly adapted PHY layer transmission parameter at a PHY layer of the communication device.

2. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the jointly adapted PHY layer transmission parameter is an MCS order or a clear channel assessment (CCA) threshold.

3. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the jointly adapted MAC layer transmission parameter is a retry limit, an arbitration interframe space (AIFS), or a contention window (CW) size.

4. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the congestion level is determined via a channel busy time fraction (CBTF), wherein the CBTF is a fraction of time during which the communication channel is busy within a time interval.

5. The communication device of claim 1 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine if the packet is associated with streaming video traffic.

6. The communication device of claim 5 , wherein the processor is further configured to determine, if the packet is associated with streaming video traffic, whether the streaming video traffic is progressive download traffic or adaptive streaming traffic.

7. A method implemented in a communication device, the method comprising:

determining a congestion level associated with a communication channel;

determining a priority level associated with a packet to be transmitted on the communication channel, wherein the priority level is determined based on a traffic classification associated with the packet;

jointly adapting a PHY layer transmission parameter and a MAC layer transmission parameter based on the determined congestion level and the determined priority level; and

transmitting the packet using the jointly adapted MAC layer transmission parameter at a MAC layer of the communication device and the jointly adapted PHY layer transmission parameter at a PHY layer of the communication device.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the jointly adapted PHY layer transmission parameter is an MCS order or a clear channel assessment (CCA) threshold.

9. The method of claim 7 , wherein the jointly adapted MAC layer transmission parameter is a retry limit, an arbitration interframe space (AIFS), or a contention window (CW) size.

10. The method of claim 7 , wherein the congestion level is determined via a channel busy time fraction (CBTF), wherein the CBTF is a fraction of time during which the communication channel is busy within a time interval.

11. The method of claim 7 , wherein the method further comprises determining if the packet is associated with streaming video traffic.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the method further comprises determining, if the packet is associated with streaming video traffic, whether the streaming video traffic is progressive download traffic or adaptive streaming traffic.
