Abstract

A cardiac pacing system having a pulse generator for generating therapeutic electric pulses, a lead electrically coupled with the pulse generator having an electrode, a first sensor configured to monitor a physiological characteristic of a patient, a second sensor configured to monitor a second physiological characteristic of a patient and a controller. The controller can determine a pacing vector based on variables including a signal received from the second sensor, and cause the pulse generator to deliver the therapeutic electrical pulses according to the determined pacing vector. The controller can also modify pacing characteristics based on variables including a signal received from the second sensor.

2. The cardiac pacing system of claim 1 , wherein the first sensor is an ECG sensor and the detected event is a change in posture that results in saturation of the ECG sensor that renders the ECG sensor ineffective at detecting whether a heart of the patient is functioning properly.

3. The cardiac pacing system of claim 1 , wherein the first physiological characteristic and the alternative physiological characteristic are selected from the group consisting of: a heart rate, a respiration rate, a blood oximetry level, a temperature, a pH level, and a pressure, the alternative physiological characteristic being different from the first physiological characteristic.

4. The cardiac pacing system of claim 1 , wherein the detected event is a change in a posture of the patient.

5. The cardiac pacing system of claim 1 , wherein the detected event is a heart rate or other detected characteristic of the heart of the patient.

6. The cardiac pacing system of claim 1 , wherein the determining includes detection of saturation of a sensing capability of the first sensor.

7. The cardiac pacing system of claim 1 , wherein after the switch, the alternative physiological characteristic is monitored to determine whether the heart is functioning properly.

8. The cardiac pacing system of claim 1 , wherein the switch is performed based on the switch algorithm learning from previous detected events.

9. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory, machine-readable medium storing instructions which, when executed by at least one programmable processor, cause operations comprising:

monitoring a first physiological characteristic of a patient with a first sensor configured to detect the first physiological characteristic to determine whether a heart of the patient is functioning properly;

monitoring the patient for a detected event;

determining that a signal from the first sensor is inappropriate for monitoring heart function; and

switching, when the detected event occurs, from monitoring the first physiological characteristic to monitoring an alternative physiological characteristic detected with a second sensor, wherein the switching to monitor the alternative physiological characteristic is further based on the determining that the signal from the first sensor is inappropriate for monitoring heart function.

10. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the first sensor is an ECG sensor and the detected event is a change in posture that results in saturation of the ECG sensor that renders the ECG sensor ineffective at detecting whether a heart of the patient is functioning properly.

11. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the first physiological characteristic and the alternative physiological characteristic are selected from the group consisting of: a heart rate, a respiration rate, a blood oximetry level, a temperature, a pH level, and a pressure, the alternative physiological characteristic being different from the first physiological characteristic.

12. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the detected event is a change in a posture of the patient.

13. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the detected event is a heart rate or other detected characteristic of the heart of the patient.

14. The computer program product of claim 9 , the determining including detecting of saturation of a sensing capability of the first sensor.

15. The computer program product of claim 9 , the operations further comprising:

monitoring the alternative physiological characteristic after the switching to determine whether the heart is functioning properly.

16. The computer program product of claim 9 , wherein the switching is performed based on the switch algorithm learning from previous detected events.

a first sensor configured to detect a first physiological characteristic of a patient, wherein the first sensor is an ECG sensor;

a second sensor configured to detect an alternative physiological characteristic of the patient; and

a controller configured to:

monitor the first physiological characteristic of the patient;

monitor the patient for a detected event, wherein the detected event is a change in posture that results in saturation of the ECG sensor that renders the ECG sensor ineffective at detecting whether a heart of the patient is functioning properly; and

switch from monitoring the first physiological characteristic to monitoring the alternative physiological characteristic when the detected event occurs.

18. The cardiac pacing system of claim 17 , wherein the first physiological characteristic and the alternative physiological characteristic are selected from the group consisting of: a heart rate, a respiration rate, a blood oximetry level, a temperature, a pH level, and a pressure, the alternative physiological characteristic being different from the first physiological characteristic.

19. The cardiac pacing system of claim 17 , wherein the switch is performed based on the switch algorithm learning from previous detected events.
