Abstract

Disclosed herein is a steerable and curvable drill that can be used for various applications including vertebroplasty. The drill can include an elongate, tubular body, having a proximal end, a distal end, and a central lumen extending therethrough; a deflectable zone on the distal end of the tubular body including one or more laser cuts, deflectable through an angular range; an insertable wire insertable into at least a portion of the central lumen of the elongate, tubular body; a handle on the proximal end of the tubular body; a deflection control on the handle; a drill control on the handle; a drive shaft within the elongate tubular body having a proximal end and a distal end; and a boring element on the distal end of the device for creating a cavity within bone. The boring element can be operably connected to the distal end of the drive shaft via a crimping mechanism. Systems and methods involving the drill are also disclosed.

Claims (42)

1. A method of creating a cavity in a bone, comprising:

creating an access channel to access an interior of a bone;

inserting a drill through the access channel, the drill comprising:

an elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end comprising a deflectable zone;

a handle on the proximal end of the elongate body;

a drive shaft disposed within the elongate body including a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion comprising one or more slit apertures on a surface of the drive shaft;

a drive bushing disposed within the handle and configured to couple the proximal portion of the drive shaft to the handle, wherein a portion of the proximal portion of the drive shaft is disposed within the drive bushing; and

a boring member coupled to the drive shaft and extending beyond the distal end of the elongate body;

directing the drill into the interior of the bone to form a first cavity;

rotating the boring member and the drive bushing such that rotation of the drive bushing rotates the drive shaft about its longitudinal axis while allowing free axial displacement of the entire drive shaft relative to the drive bushing upon deflecting of the deflectable zone of the elongate body;

deflecting the deflectable zone; and

advancing the drill into the interior of the bone to create the cavity.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting an introducer cannula into the access channel and inserting the drill through the introducer cannula.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the directing the drill further comprises redirecting the drill, at least once, to form a plurality of cavities.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising removing the drill from the access channel.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising inserting a fluid delivery device into the first cavity and injecting a flowable material into the cavity through the fluid delivery device.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the fluid delivery device is an injection needle.

7. The method of claim 5 , wherein the flowable material is a bone cement.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising injecting a flowable material into the first cavity through the drill.

9. The method of claim 8 , wherein the flowable material is a bone cement.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the rotating the boring member comprises rotating a drill control.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the deflecting the deflectable zone comprises rotating a front handle member.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the drive shaft has a cross- sectional shape other than circular, and where the drive bushing comprises a lumen with a complementary shape to the cross-sectional shape of the drive shaft.

13. A method of treating a bone, comprising:

creating an access channel to access an interior of a bone;

inserting an introducer cannula into the access channel;

inserting a drill through the introducer cannula, the drill comprising:

an elongate body having a proximal end and a distal end, the distal end comprising a deflectable zone;

a handle on the proximal end of the elongate body;

a drive shaft disposed within the elongate body including a proximal portion and a distal portion, the distal portion comprising one or more slit apertures on a surface of the drive shaft;

a drive bushing disposed within the handle and configured to couple the proximal portion of the drive shaft to the handle, wherein a portion of the proximal portion of the drive shaft is disposed within the drive bushing; and

a boring member coupled to the drive shaft and extending beyond the distal end of the elongate body;

rotating the boring member and the drive bushing such that rotation of the drive bushing rotates the drive shaft about its longitudinal axis while allowing free axial displacement of the entire drive shaft relative to the drive bushing upon deflecting of the deflectable zone of the elongate body;

deflecting the deflectable zone;

advancing the drill into the interior of the bone to form a first cavity; and

injecting a flowable material into the first cavity.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the advancing the drill into the interior of the bone is repeated, at least once, to form a plurality of cavities.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising inserting a fluid delivery device into the first cavity.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the flowable material is a bone cement.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the rotating the boring member comprises rotating a drill control.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the deflecting the deflectable zone comprises rotating a front handle member.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the drive shaft has a cross-sectional shape other than circular, and where the drive bushing comprises a lumen with a complementary shape to the cross-sectional shape of the drive shaft.
