Abstract

Electrode systems have been developed for use in perfusion systems to measure the electrical activity of an explanted heart and to provide defibrillation energy as necessary. The perfusion systems maintain the heart in a beating state at, or near, normal physiological conditions; circulating oxygenated, nutrient enriched perfusion fluid to the heart at or near physiological temperature, pressure and flow rate. These systems include a pair of electrodes that are placed epicardially on the right atrium and left ventricle of the explanted heart, as well as an electrode placed in the aortic blood path.

Claims (30)

1. An organ care system for maintaining an explanted heart at near physiologic conditions using a perfusion fluid, the organ care system comprising:

an organ chamber assembly configured to contain the explanted heart;

a heater assembly configured to heat the perfusion fluid to a temperature between 26° C. and 37° C.;

a first electrode placed in an aortic bloodstream conduit;

a second electrode connected to the organ care system;

a third electrode connected to the organ care system; and

a controller configured to:

receive a signal from at least one of the first electrode or the second electrode, and

control the heater assembly.

2. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the second electrode or the third electrode is in a sterile environment.

3. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the second electrode or the third electrode comprises stainless steel and is over-molded with silicone.

4. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the second electrode or the third electrode is configured to be about a one inch by one inch square with a rounded edge.

5. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the second electrode or the third electrode has a first side and a second side, wherein the first side is configured to be placed epicardially on the explanted heart, and wherein the second side is over-molded with silicone.

6. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein the first electrode is configured to be placed in the aortic bloodstream conduit outside the organ chamber assembly.

7. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein the organ chamber assembly further comprises a pad configured to hold the explanted heart, and wherein at least one of the second electrode or the third electrode is configured to be held in place against the pad by the explanted heart.

8. The organ care system of claim 1 , further comprising a circuit, wherein the circuit comprises the first electrode, the second electrode, and the third electrode.

9. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein the heater assembly is configured to heat the perfusion fluid to a temperature between about 32° C. and about 37° C.

10. The organ care system of claim 1 , further comprising a defibrillation source.

11. The organ care system of claim 10 , further comprising a defibrillator connector configured to provide a defibrillation energy from the defibrillation source to the explanted heart.

12. The organ care system of claim 11 , further comprising a defibrillation circuit wherein the second electrode is connected to a first wire, wherein the first wire is connected to a binding post, wherein the binding post is connected to the defibrillator connector by a second wire.

13. The organ care system of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the first wire or the second wire comprises copper, and wherein the at least one of the first wire or the second wire comprises a PVC insulation or a heat shrink tubing.

14. The organ care system of claim 12 , wherein at least one of the first wire or the second wire comprises stainless steel and is over-molded with silicone.

15. The organ care system of claim 12 , wherein the third electrode is connected to a third wire, wherein the third wire is connected to a second binding post, wherein the second binding post is connected to the defibrillator connector by a fourth wire.

16. The organ care system of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the third wire or the fourth wire comprises copper, and wherein the at least one of the third wire or the fourth wire comprises a PVC insulation or a heat shrink tubing.

17. The organ care system of claim 15 , wherein at least one of the third wire or the fourth wire comprises stainless steel and is over-molded with silicone.

18. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein the second electrode is configured to be placed epicardially on the explanted heart.

19. The organ care system of claim 1 , wherein the third electrode is configured to be placed epicardially on the explanted heart.

20. The organ care system of claim 7 , wherein the pad comprises a through-aperture, wherein the through-aperture is configured to pass an electrical lead to a corresponding electrode.

21. The organ care system of claim 1 , further comprising at least one binding post connected to at least one of the second electrode or the third electrode, wherein the binding post allows an electrical connection to the at least one of the second electrode or the third electrode within the organ chamber assembly.

22. The organ care system of claim 1 , further comprising a front end board connector configured to receive a signal from at least one of the first electrode, the second electrode, or the third electrode, wherein the front-end board connector is connected to the controller.
