Abstract

A catheter system including a housing and a drive mechanism supported by the housing is provided. The drive mechanism includes an engagement structure configured to engage and to impart movement to a guide wire. The engagement structure defines a path for the guide wire, and the engagement structure is moveable between an engaged position in which the engagement structure engages the guide wire and a disengaged position in which the engagement structure does not engage the guide wire. The catheter system includes a biasing element configured to bias the engagement structure toward the engaged position, and the biasing element is aligned generally parallel to the path defined by the engagement structure.

Claims (27)

1. A robotic catheter system comprising:

a cassette including a housing having a front end, a rear end, a sidewall, a first channel, and a second channel,

a motor drive base comprising a first drive motor and a second drive motor located in the motor drive base;

a first axial drive mechanism including a first pair of engagement surfaces, located within the first channel, arranged to impart axial movement to a guide wire extending along the first channel, through the rear end of the housing and through the front end of the housing, and

a second axial drive mechanism including a second pair of engagement surfaces located within the second channel arranged to impart axial movement to a catheter device extending along the second channel;

the second axial drive mechanism being located at an angle relative to the first axial drive mechanism;

one of the first pair of engagement surfaces being coupled to a first motor in the motor drive base and one of the second pair of engagement surfaces being coupled to a second motor in the motor drive base;

the cassette, being removably supported by the motor drive base.

2. The robotic catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the sidewall defines a recess, the second channel having an opening located within the recess.

3. The robotic catheter system of claim 2 , wherein only the second channel includes an opening located within the recess, and wherein the recess is formed in a side wall of the housing, the first channel does not include an opening located in the recess.

4. The robotic catheter system of claim 2 , further including a first motor coupler transmitting motion to a first drive element connected to one of the first pair of engagement surfaces.

5. The robotic catheter system of claim 4 , wherein the motor drive base includes the first motor coupler and the first drive element is removably coupled to the first motor coupler.

6. The robotic catheter system of claim 5 , wherein the cassette includes the second pair of engagement surfaces.

7. The robotic catheter system of claim 6 , wherein guide wire is in a substantially continuous straight line along a longitudinal axis of the cassette through the first axial drive mechanism and through a juncture where the second channel merges with the first channel, the angle between the second channel and the first channel immediately adjacent the juncture is acute.

8. The robotic catheter system of claim 7 , wherein the second axial drive mechanism includes a second coupler directly removably coupling one engagement member of the second pair of engagement members with the second motor in the motor drive base.

9. The robotic catheter system of claim 8 , wherein the other engagement member of the second pair of engagement members moves toward and away from the one of the second pair of engagement members, and wherein the other of the second pair of engagement members pivots perpendicular to a catheter longitudinal axis distal to the engagement member.

10. The robotic catheter system of claim 9 , including a spring member biasing the other engagement member of the second pair of engagement members toward the one engagement member of the second pair of engagement members.

11. The robotic catheter system of claim 1 , wherein guide wire is in a substantially continuous straight line along a longitudinal axis of the cassette through the first axial drive mechanism and through a juncture where the second channel merges with the first channel, the angle between the second channel and the first channel immediately adjacent the juncture is acute.

12. The robotic catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the first pair of engagement surfaces are part of a first axial drive mechanism, and the second pair of engagement surfaces are part of a second axial drive mechanism, the second axial drive mechanism is positioned at the angle relative to the first axial drive mechanism.

13. The robotic catheter system of claim 12 , wherein the guide wire is aligned with a longitudinal axis of the cassette.

14. The robotic catheter system of claim 13 , wherein the guide wire is straight within a guide wire channel defined by the cassette.

15. The robotic catheter system of claim 14 , wherein the guide wire is straight within the longitudinal axis of the entire first channel.

16. The robotic catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the first pair of engagement surfaces are movable with respect to each other to engage and disengage the guide wire therebetween.

17. The robotic catheter system of claim 1 , further including a guide wire rotation motor in the motor drive base to impart rotational movement to the guide wire.

18. The robotic catheter system of claim 1 , further including a cover pivotally attached to the housing to cover the first channel and the second channel, moving from a closed position to an open position where the first channel is exposed allowing a user to load a guide wire therein in a direction perpendicular to a longitudinal axis of the first channel.

19. The robotic catheter system of claim 1 , wherein the first pair of engagement surfaces being arranged to contact the guide wire with sufficient pressure such that when the engagement surfaces are driven, axial movement is imparted to the guide wire; and

wherein the second pair of engagement surfaces being arranged to contact the catheter device with sufficient pressure such that when the engagement surfaces are driven, axial movement is imparted to the catheter device.
