Abstract

There is provided a droplet sorting device including a detector configured to detect a state of droplets ejected from an orifice that generates a fluid stream and of satellite droplets existing between the droplets, and a controller configured to control a frequency of a driving voltage supplied to a vibration element that applies vibration to the orifice on the basis of positions where the satellite droplets exist.

Claims (38)

1. A droplet sorting apparatus comprising:

a detection device configured to detect states of satellite droplets ejected between droplets from an orifice of a structure having a flow channel;

a vibration element adapted to vibrate the structure with an operating frequency; and

a controller adapted to determine the operating frequency of a driving signal that is supplied to the vibration element based at least in part upon detected states of the satellite droplets under two or more conditions of different amplitudes of the driving signal.

2. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a detected state of a satellite droplet of the satellite droplets comprises a determination of whether the satellite droplet is absorbed in a preceding droplet adjacent to the satellite droplet.

3. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a voltage supply arranged to drive the vibration element with the driving signal; and

an image data processor configured to analyze images of the satellite droplets and droplets obtained by the detection device.

4. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the droplet sorting apparatus is configured to automatically quantify asymmetry values of the droplets and wherein the controller is further configured to control the frequency of the driving signal in a manner that the quantified asymmetry values fall within a predetermined range.

5. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the droplet sorting apparatus is configured to automatically:

apply different frequencies by the voltage supply to the vibration element; and

determine a location of a break-off point of the droplets with respect to the orifice for the applied frequencies.

6. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the operating frequency is determined based further upon a distance of the break-off point from the orifice and absorption of a satellite droplet of the satellite droplets within an adjacent droplet.

7. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the operating frequency is determined based further upon:

a distance of the break-off point from the orifice; and

at a fixed frequency of the different frequencies, how a change in an amplitude of the driving signal affects the location of a break-off point at the fixed frequency.

8. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 5 , wherein the operating frequency is determined based further upon:

a distance of the break-off point from the orifice and absorption of a satellite droplet of the satellite droplets within an adjacent droplet; and

at a fixed frequency of the different frequencies, how a change in an amplitude of the driving signal affects the location of a break-off point at the fixed frequency.

9. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the detection device comprises:

an image sensor arranged to acquire images of at least multiple droplets and satellite droplets in a frame; and

an image data processor configured to process the images and identify droplets and satellite droplets.

10. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 9 , further comprising a positioner arranged to move the image sensor along a direction of the ejected droplets.

11. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the structure comprises a replaceable microchip having a sample inlet and sheath inlet connected by fluidic channels to the orifice.

12. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the microchip includes a suction outlet arranged to apply negative pressure to the flow channel.

13. The droplet sorting apparatus of claim 11 , wherein the vibration element abuts or is internal to the microchip.

14. A droplet sorting method comprising:

detecting, with a detection device, states of satellite droplets ejected between droplets from an orifice of a structure having a flow channel;

applying driving signals to a vibration element to vibrate the structure at different frequencies; and

determining an operating frequency from the different frequencies based at least in part upon detected states of the satellite droplets under two or more conditions of different amplitudes of a driving signal applied at one frequency.

15. The droplet sorting method of claim 14 , wherein a detected state of a satellite droplet of the satellite droplets comprises a determination of whether the satellite droplet is absorbed in a preceding droplet adjacent to the satellite droplet.

16. The droplet sorting method of claim 14 , further comprising determining the operating frequency based further upon:

a location of a break-off point with respect to the orifice, wherein the break-off point is where the droplets separate from a stream ejected from the orifice; and

absorption of a satellite droplet of the satellite droplets within an adjacent droplet.

17. A droplet sorting method comprising:

receiving images of satellite droplets ejected between droplets from an orifice of a structure having a flow channel, wherein the images are obtained for different driving frequencies and amplitudes applied to a vibration element that vibrates the structure; and

automatically determining an operating frequency from the different frequencies based at least in part upon detected states of the satellite droplets under two or more conditions of different amplitudes applied at one frequency.

18. The droplet sorting method of claim 17 , further comprising outputting a signal to control the vibration element to vibrate at the operating frequency.
