Abstract

An ultrasonic surgical instrument is disclosed. The ultrasonic surgical instrument includes a housing, an ultrasonic transducer assembly to selectively generate ultrasonic motion, a motor within the housing, an outer sheath coupled to the housing, and a blade operably coupled to the ultrasonic transducer assembly and rotatably supported within the outer sheath for rotation with the ultrasonic transducer assembly. The ultrasonic transducer assembly is rotatably supported within the housing. The motor is configured to selectively apply a rotary motion to the ultrasonic transducer assembly. The outer sheath includes a distal tip portion defining a tip cavity. The blade includes a tissue-cutting distal end rotatably supported within the tip cavity. A portion of the tissue-cutting distal end is configured to apply the ultrasonic motion to tissue.

Claims (17)

1. An ultrasonic surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing;

an ultrasonic transducer assembly to selectively generate ultrasonic motion, wherein the ultrasonic transducer assembly is rotatably supported within the housing;

a motor within the housing, wherein the motor is configured to selectively apply a rotary motion to the ultrasonic transducer assembly;

an outer sheath coupled to the housing, wherein the outer sheath comprises a distal tip portion defining a tip cavity; and

a blade operably coupled to the ultrasonic transducer assembly and rotatably supported within the outer sheath for rotation with the ultrasonic transducer assembly, wherein the blade includes a tissue-cutting distal end rotatably supported within the tip cavity, and wherein a portion of the tissue-cutting distal end is configured to apply the ultrasonic motion to tissue.

2. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tip cavity comprises a friction reducing material, and wherein the friction reducing material is applied to at least one of:

an inner wall of the tip cavity; or

a portion of the tissue-cutting distal end.

3. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue-cutting distal end comprises a curved segment, and wherein a cutting edge is defined on each lateral side of the curved segment.

4. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the outer sheath defines a distal aperture configured to expose the tissue-cutting distal end.

5. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 4 , wherein the tissue-cutting distal end is configured to cut tissue drawn into the distal aperture.

6. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the tissue-cutting distal end is selectively:

rotatable without applying the ultrasonic motion;

rotatable while applying the ultrasonic motion; and

non-rotatable while applying the ultrasonic motion.

7. The ultrasonic surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the ultrasonic transducer assembly is rotatable to a predetermined position for the portion of the tissue-cutting distal end to apply the ultrasonic motion to the tissue.
